Change of Direction

Completed my Sacagawea Proof Set It has been several months since my last journal entry. During that time I have sold off many of my coins and deleted many of my competing sets from the registry. This was because I was working on so many sets that I could not find any direction in my collections. I was buying too many lower graded coins just to add something to my registry sets and was finding myself getting nowhere real fast with my registry standing. Now I have been able to concentrate on

Re; Missing Coins

Make a Report I would make a report to the police and give them the cert# numbers and call all the coin shops in a hundred mile or more radias and tell them the numbers as well you never know they might just show up. I hope you find them.

Birthday Present and the Missing Set....

A cool new purchase and the worst kind of magic trick. Well, as I meantioned in a previous post I was wanting to get something special for my set for my birthday. Last year I purchased the 1 gold coin in my set (a 2007 MS70 $10 gold Eagle). It occured to me that it might be fun to get another gold coin of a similar size and make it MS70 and maybe make this a yearly tradition for myself (heck, why not?). I had thought about getting myself one of the new factional Buffalos but the demand around

Hindsight is always 20/20

A good day of upgrades Yesterday I was fortunate enough to upgrade 2 Morgan Silver Dollars to much higher quality specimans. It made me think back to the the days when I first caught the collecting bug and simply wanted "A coin in every slot". As a result of that philosophy, I now have 2,3 and sometimes 4 coins of the same mintage and date. Yet, this is a good thing because I have become so much more selective of the coins I add to my collection. Obviously, quality and eye appeal are the

My NGC Family is ***AWESOME***

Many Thanks for your kindness We all have moe than one family. We have our family at home, extended family members, our "work" family, our "social" family and NGC is no different. As collectors we share a common bond, the love and joy of our hobby. On this site it is natural to become friends, even close friends, with people we have never met. As "family" though, we share both the good times and the not-so-good. We let our family know when we get that elusive coin to complete a set. A spe

My NGC Membership is About to Expire

I am scrambling to find a way to re-new Greetings folks!! I have been faithfully checking in, but have not left a post here for a little while. I thought tonight would be a good time to do that as I have much to say about the paid NGC membership.   I'll never forget this time last year as I found my collecting passion of American Silver Eagle coins. I remember the inspiration I found as I watched a documentary about the US Mint, and West Point. I felt strongly I needed to obtain thes

$5 gold american eagles

MS70 PCGS only i have been collecting $5 gold american eagles for several years now and all the coins are PCGS graded. my set ranks 8th in the NGC registry and 4th in the PCGS registry. the coins were minted from 1986 to date. the only coins i need in MS70 to have a complete set of PCGS MS70 graded coins are 1988 to 1993. these are very low pop. coins from 1 to 5 [PCGS]. i have not been able to locate any except those graded by NGC. the NGC pops are much higher than the PCGS pops for MS70. i h

A bad economy is a good thing

Things are making sense now Everyone who plays the stock market is getting hit hard.My stocks are in coins.I just can't figure out why is gold is going down hard and people are paying over 400.00 over melt. You have to have something wrong with you to do that.Gas is getting cheaper by the day.Hopefully soon it will be 99 cents a gallon.Coins are even cheaper to buy.A lot of people are selling and just almost just as many are buying. This is by far my biggest month buying coins.17 total and top p

I need some clarity on grading

FBL, FS, FB, FT etc 1st, Full bell lines, say I have a nice 1960-D franklin with real nice bell lines, good clear, sharp etc. BUT, there is a very minor nick that goes through two lines at the bottom of the bell. does this "cancel" the FBL status? This same question goes for the nickel, nice steps, all 6 are sharp and all the way across, but that nick goes through, say one step, or even two steps, will this coin lose the FS rating. Dimes, torch on dimes. Thanks

Can't believe I surpassed 150 modern submissions this year - 2008

2008 has been quite a year. I really appreciate being part of the Collectors Society. I often wonder whether my submissions are good money spent given the economic times. The graders have been pretty tough. Hoping for some good grades on my latest submissions: (3) 2008 P $1 MS John Quincy Adams (1) 2008 D $1 MS James Monroe (1) 2008 D $1 MS Martin Van Buren (1) 2008 D $1 MS Sacagawea (6) 2008 W $1 MS Silver Eagle (5) 2008 S $1 PF Andrew Jackson (5) 2007 S $1 PF Geo

Paint Your Wagon

Just 105 coins to go.... I'm writing this journal to bring attention to my latest set. I only hope I don't bring too much attention to these very small, insignificant coins, as I definitely don't want more competition in finishing my set. Anyway, I hope all is well with you and yours. Happy Halloween!!

Completing, competing and then the set is staged.

almost completed my first set one left to go. I am sure for all, to do this would be for bragging rights, but completing a competing set is one of sadness and jubilation. For one the hunt or the journey is always so much more exhilarating. This particular hunt will be over once I get my greedy little fingers on that second most precious item of the Silver Eagle Proof Set. The one and only 1993 P.Well not the one and only P. It is quite expensive and in an economy built on greed and failing on

I got #1 ???

New #1 in the 1971 proof sets? I don't signed on to the site for over a month, and somehow I got the #1 slot in the 1971 proof sets. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving it! Well, I'm loving it for the time being. I wondered if Kallenberg had sold something, ....nope. I didn't add nothing to take over (if I did, it would of cost me a marriage). Then I stated looking at the dates of another 1971 set that I hold dear, which is the 1971 PF 69 cameo. I noticed on one of the dates, it lists the dim

Gold is down how low will it go

The title doesn't have much to do with the journal below. I just added two MS70 coins to my Modern Commemorative set, A 2005 Marine corp and a 2007 Little Rock. Silver and Gold are way down and I am looking for bargains. I have also been buying lots of wheat's for the up coming holidays as the sets I build make great gifts. I'm still searching for just the right coins for my Mercury Dime short set, it has been so much fun that I started to lose sight of make goal in my zeal to complete it and

Coin of the Month for October

And the coin of the month for October is... The coin of the month for October is a 1820 Large Cent. It is graded by NGC as MS-65 BN. The color is an attractive chocolate brown but it has red-violet around the devices. The luster is a very strong cartwheel. The strike is very sharp except for the stars some of which are not quite fully struck. As often seen for this type it has a complete radial die crack connecting the stars.

COMPLETE!!

MS SAEs are done! Today I added the last SAE to my collection! It is the 2000 Millennium Silver Eagle. I have been working on these eagles this year and my goal was to have them completed before 2009. I did happen to get some Proof SAEs and modern commemoratives along the way but the MS was actually an obtainable goal. I was worried about the "08 with reverse of 07" when it was discovered but I was lucky enough to get in on the ground floor when they appeared and got an MS-70 at a great price.

U.S Post Office strikes again on all collectors

new regulation states that all coins and notes must be sent registered mail...minimum cost...$8.00 just down to my friendly post office, and the guy that knows my business let me know that a new directive had just came out that forthwith all coins and currency that could be spent..in other words was considered legal tender...now had to be sent by registered mail. that means that if you buy a $2.00 coin, the shipper would need to charge you about $10.00 for first class registered mail to send

Re: A loss beyond words

True friends are the ones who are there for you in the bad times, not just the good times. I read with great sadness about Michael Cooper's son, Elijah. The loss of any child is a tragedy, but losing one so young only magnifies the loss with thoughts of what could have/should have been. I lost my son, David, almost two years ago. My other son was in the hospital for three months after his premature birth at less than two pounds. The kind messages of concern I received from complete strang

The Things That Truly Matter

it's so easy to lose perspective This latest entry into my journal was going to be far different. I was going to ruminate on how dissapointing it can be to lose out on a coin that you really want at auction. In the past I have shared my frustrations and joys that I've had while enjoying our great hobby. I guess "hobby" is the operative word--defined as "fad, whim or pastime". These definitions put a better perspective on how little these shiny little disks matter in relation to the truly

My ANACS slabs made a run for it. Breaking out- Part 5

I've had pretty good luck so far so why not send in some more. I've been keeping track of my cross-overs in my journal and here's the latest. All 5 coins were in ANACS holders which are really nice looking, maybe the best looking of all the services. The first coin is a 1937 Ireland farthing which was graded ANACS-MS-63RB and came back ina NGC holder as a MS-64RB. A nice bump up of one grade which it deserved on eye appeal alone. Next up was a 1931 Ire. penny sent in as a MS-63RB and sent back

NGC's new holders.

I like them! I guess I am going to get flamed here but I don't understand the reactions to NGC's new holder? I haven't tried it yet but I think that taking photos of coins will be much easier with the new holder. The area around the coin is opened up more light will get to the coin. Also small coins wont look like they are hiding out.IMO.

BankNote1

BankNote1

Why don?t I like the new NGC holders?

Three reasons for your consideration. One: Unprofessional appearance. Two much empty space around the coin makes the holder looks unprofessional, thus creating a feeling of insecurity. Two: Limited holding areas. Coins often moves back and forth in NGC holders, but in new holder, when a small coin is moved out of the holding areas, it is free to go whatever direction it wants. Comparing to the old holders, the new holders only use about 20% to 50% of the coin?s edges, so moving back an
