I am content. - John Quincey Adams, Last Words
As crazy as things get around here dealing with school and work it's easy to complain about life. This week though I'm pulling up on a bit of a milestone. In 6 days I'll be 22 years old. Because of issues I'm not going to get into, I was lucky to make it to my first birthday, lucky to make it out of high school alive (long story), and sometimes you just have to wonder how you made it through 2 decades. Last year, upon reaching 21, I purchased a pa
So very sorry.
I am so very very sorry for your lose of your son. This would not have beeen something that i ever would have expected to read in the journals today. You must be a very strong person to be able to share your terrible lose with your fellow collectors. Please accept my most sincere condolences to you and your family. The coin you picked is a beautiful coin for your son. I'm sure he will love it.
Putting things in the proper perspective.
After reading a number of entries regarding NGCs new holders, what they allow in the registry sets and what is not allowed, and the trivial complants and gripes that we all have with this or that, I read Michael W. Coopers latest entry and I was brought back to reality. Michael needs our prayers and support, fellow members. Please send a message to let him know that his family is in our thoughts and include a few words of encouragement. A final thou
Hope on the horizon
Dear Journal,
Sunday morning, October 12, my youngest son, Elijah, aged 7 passed away. The hardest thing I have ever done was to sit down last night and write the obituary for my little boy. Parents shouldn't have to do things like that. Today, while at the funeral home makeing the funeral plans, I found myself wanting to send a coin with my son. I wanted this coin to have special meaning.
As I pondered which coin it might be, I thought of my dear frined on this forum,
The 2009 collections
So far this has been a pretty good year for collecting, and looking forward to maybe adding a couple more before the years out. But mainly looking forward to the Nasa Collection to become available hopefully in the next year or so, as I have always be a great fan of Nasa and the things they do.
Now I am just looking forward to a couple weeks off, traveling south to Tenn. smokey mountains for a while and enjoy the fall colors from a cabin on a hill somewhere, then cont.
Those rare individuals who help out, even though they don't need to.
HI~! It's been a while since I have written. Today though, seems like a good day, with a good reason. Even though I want to name the person that I am talking about, I won't. Today I had the rare pleasure of recieving help from a fellow collector. I needed his coin for my set, and offered a trade. I felt that it was a good trade, but at no time did this fellow collector have to trade and help me out, at all. He did though!! He
NGC needs to fire their design team.
What in the world was NGC thinking when they brought out this new holder design? A holder should be an attractive background for a coin--or at least neutral. I've been able to put together the # 72 ranked Morgan Date set during the past year. I also have a nicely ranked St. Gaudens Date set and a complete ASE set. I was going to send in 5-10 raw coins for grading to boost my ranking. No thanks. Hate to say it but there is no way any of my coins are going in
not all MS66's are equal
If you've been collecting certified coins for any length of time I'm sure that you've noticed certain trends. For example, PCGS coins often sell for more than NGC coins.
For modern coins this is understandable. NGC dominates the modern coin market. PCGS's only recourse is to create "condition rarities"-usually by limiting the number of perfect 70's or MS68 grade coins that they allow. This is just my opinion ( I have heard this from dozens of others also) however I
Red Chinese, a country that is a communist country and we ignore the free world the most amazing our true allies in NATO.
I have brought up this subject before but I do not understand why the NGC Registry does not allow the posting of any coin that it will grade, when I know that NGC makes plenty of money off of grading the vary coins that I am taking about.
The list of non-U.S. coins that are allowed in the NGC pathetic Canada, few home territories and the most unbelievable is an ideologic
ANA is certification/class on grading German coins is pending, NGC has failed the Collectors Society members by denying world coins (which they grade to be placed in the Registry and last but not least the horrors of counterfeit coins being sold continues unabated.
I recently had an e-mail conversation with ANA Board member (there is no need to name him now, if you would like his contact information. I do not know how fellow NGC Community Members feel about NGC Registry, but it totally igno
Great for only the presidential dollars
I can understand ngc wanting to have more security features, but I think everyone in the ngc registery should have voted on the type of holders. The only person who picked that new design had to be blind or seriously something is wrong with him. Now my coins will look horrible next to the new generation holders.Personially I would rather send my coins back to ngc and pay 10.00 and put my coins in an old holder than display my coins on that god ugly new hol
World coins verus US Coins.
I can not for speak for world coins in general but i can to some degree speak about Canadian coins. To be fair to NGC they are working on some of my requests. There are many types listed but many more are not and even with in the types many are missing, many are not up todate. To me the Candians produce the most types and styles of any country PLUS some of the most BEAUTIFUL coins ever produced. The minting process is imp
I must admit, wow, the new slabs are ugly
I must say the edge viewing holders are not for all coins, especially small coins. I was hoping for a slimmer, smaller dimention slabs. It is hard to imagine that we are stuck with these slabs for the next few years; until NGC changes its slabs again of course. Here is the unpleasant-to-the-eye photo of one of the new slabs.
Millennium SAE is the last
I just put 2 more MS SAEs...1992 & 1996... into my registry and I only need 1 more to finish that baby up. The last few months I have been focused on these Eagles more then the rest of my collection. I did manage to add a couple modern comms during this time but it has been exclusively MS SAEs.
These would of been my last coins but a Millennium SAE was lost by the USPS awhile back. I haven't been able to find one at a good price lately. The one that disappeared
So why so much?
What happened in 93/94 that caused so few PF70 certified Silver Eagles?
I am picking up a 93 NGC PF70 for around $2000 which I believe is a good deal. I was just curious how these 2 years have gotten as pricey as the coveted 1995-W.
By the way let me know if you guys think the 1993 deal is not a good one.
Thanks
A continuation of my journey for the elusive VAM discovery. I'm sharing thoughts on what experiences I have had and what I have learned to help me get better at attributing my own coins and help me look for something yet to be discovered...
As a continuation of my last journal entry, I would like to discuss some of the things I have encountered as someone fairly new to VAM collecting. Since I have been at this for less than a year, I was certainly no expert and did not have the numismatic back
buy it now
the global ecomony is in a severe crisis. people are losing their shirts in their 401K and pension plans. this is a global fact. they are starting to sell their coins to raise cash. the problem is other people are not willing to spend their money buying coins in this turbelent time. the consequent is coins are selling for a fraction of their value. i have been buying $5 MS70 gold eagles graded by PCGS for a fraction of their cost as valued by NGC. NOW THAT IS A DEAL. as we are all a
my "set" is too big
It's hard to believe but I may have too many coins. My signature set called "High Seas" is a themed set with nthe only requirement being that the coin must depict a sailing ship. I currently have 148 coins in the set listing....3 coins that need to be added...and 51 coins that will be sent for slabbing/grading on November 1st.
This will enable me to reach my goal for 2008, which was to break the 200 coin mark for this collection. Unfortunately, signature sets only all
Guess the Grade
Recently received this from an online auction. There is more lustre than my photos indicate. There is some mint red around the devices as well. What do you think NGC graded it?
Holidays fast appraoching, more new coins will be bought...
Greetings!
Well, we are only slightly into October as I write this entry and a great chill is in the air and much rain is falling here in SLC.
It is just enough for me to wax a bit nostalgic about the current condition of my great coin collection as I am very proud of the progress I have made with it in less than a year of serious collecting.
It was about this time last year that I became a paid member here and started my s
kids in college
I knew this time would come someday... but not so soon.... bad economy, kids in college, business income down... so my coin collection has to go... except for the better peace set.... that will go last if I have to. So any one looking... give me your best offers to add to your collections. It's a sad sad day. Damn the economy.
