A Journey of Ups and Downs

From feast to famine in my coin world.. Well, this has been a year that will live with me for a long time as I have seen my own personal finances peak and fade. There have been job changes, wage increases/decreases, there has been hope and despair....all in the course of 12 months. This has affected my buying power for coins greatly, and I have not purchased any coins for my collection now in a few months...though I DID add to my comic registry...when maybe I should have held on to my mo

It's a "NO SHOW"

A discourging word. I decided to go to the annual Whitman Coin show held in Atlanta yesterday. I specifically went to see if I should send a particular coin in for grading or if they someone thought it was "cleaned". Some of the prominent grading services were there like ICG, ANACS, and PCGS. Could not find a grader among them and NGC did not "show". I was told NGC went to the Sarasota show. I did not realize Sarasota had a larger market than Atlanta. After 20 minutes I decided to make m

I am with you Jackson, Goodbye to ebay from me as well.

A Message to EBAY Corporate Offices It used to be fun. I would buy so many things from ebay auctions, I sold quite a lot for a few years too. Then the bean counters and corporate nutbags got ahold of the reigns. First the percentages went up, then buy it now with really ridiculous listing fees and a HUGE post sale percentage. A few months ago a "new and improved" fee structure for power sellers who could get up to 20% off of our ebay fees if we met certain criteria which we, of course, cou

Nice birthday coin Well thought this was just a pretty neat new coin I recieved yesterday for my birthday, although the face my be off just a bit on it. Still I think my wife done a pretty good job of coming up with the ideal , being that coins is all I collect now I guess it was easy for her to get the ideal. Also got the ms & pf 70's of the founding father that I will be adding to my set in the next fews days. Also look to be adding the 08 gold bald eagle soon as well. after all its sa

Twice now found my passion.

I never would have guessed back in 1990 that others (as well as me) went to their local bank branch/s to get nickle, penny, quarter and dime rolls to hunt for that special coin!! Somehow, I lost the passion back then, but I've found it again. It's a brave new coin world now. Any advice to a new coin age rookie?

What a week....

From Friday to Friday, oh what "fun" has been had. 1 week ago on the 15th the Postal Service finally delivered a package they had had for exactly 4 weeks. For a shipment from Austin to Houston that's just terrible, but it arrived. Both invoices in my first submission to NGC have switched to "scheduled for grading" on different days this week. I'm checking daily in vain hope. I must admit that I'm really excited by this and I'm really hoping for at least a few good grades. A childhood frien

Dimes and Dollars, descriptions, Pictures good and bad While I am waiting for my Thomas Jefferson proof 70UC to come so I can enter it in my set. I have been working on my descriptions and pictures. The pictures are coming along, some are good some are not. I have redone some of the worst ones already. I have tried different things with the size of the original and the cropped end product and am still working to improve the over all appearance. As we all know the limiting of the size of the pi

Stack's Purchases And An August Update

Just when I thought I could pay off my credit cards... ...I had to buy some items in some of Stack's auctions. I hope everyone understands first of all, I'm not trying to blame Stack's. :-) My tongue is firmly planted in my cheek as I write this. It seems that Stack's have a cacaphony of items that I like, and want to put into my Wild West theme collection. Unfortunately for me, I don't have unlimited cash, so I have to pick and choose what items to bid on. So, as I try to pay off my credit

I'm Gonna Miss Ebay

all good things must end A large part of my coin collecting experience has been perusing auction sites and finding hidden gems and obscure sailing ship coins for my sets. Ebay was always a fun place to search. Often I would use simple keyword searches ( "ship" has always been a bit of a pain because of the amount of listings that say Free Ship-because there was not enough space to type free shipping). Another way I use ebay and euro collections is by studying my Krause catalogs and then s

Is there an inverse relationship between the price of silver and scarce coins?

a lot more coins are minted when silver prices are high If you look at silver Eagle population reports, the scarcer coins are in years when silver was at about $5-9 an ounce. Nobody wanted to buy silver Eagles for their bullion value then. So comparatively few were minted, or at least a lot less than when silver prices are high and interest in silver bullion is high. However, if you go back to the Trade dollar issue, and compare it to Morgan dollars, this argument doesn't hold up because M

Breaking Out - Part Four

U.S. coins make a break for it, and make it to the other side. Wow, I was thinking the US stuff would take some time at NGC but they are done and here are the results. Lets do the Buffalos first- My 1926 SEGS-65 came back as a NGC-64, I agree. My 1928-D SEGS-64 came back as a NGC-63, Umm, I agree I think. My old PCI 1938-D MS-66 is now in a NGC as MS-67, Oh ya, I agree. My 1915 ANACS-63 is a NGC-63, really was thinking this would get bumped up to a 64. The next coin was purchased from a friend

Set Upgrades from Crossovers, Raw Coins, and Cut-Outs - Part 1

This debut entry will serve as an overview of my experiences thus far in adding to my Registry Sets through various forms of submissions to NGC and PCGS. Grades from the 1st and 2nd rounds of coin submissions have come back from PCGS... In an attempt to clean up my collection, and make it more accurate in terms of grades, several groups of coins have been submitted to NGC and PCGS in recent weeks. The first submission consisted of 8 key date coins sent to PCGS for Crossover Service. The

.Upgrading and Waiting

Some auction action and the Buffaloes pushed back some more to September I just checked on my Buffalo order with the mint and delivery has been pushed back to 9-4-08. I have won two PR70UC 2007 Presidential dollars a James Madison and Thomas Jefferson using my shot gun approach. That's where I set a max bid and bid on as many as I can only this time I tried Ebays bid asst. It worked pretty good I won one for $24.00 and the other one for $26 using a max bid of $28.51. It took some time 8 day

BREAKING OUT, PART FOUR?

MORE ON NNC Before I knew better, I also bought a number of NNC slabbed coins from Centles on E-bay. They were all Indian and Lincoln pennies. I, also, figured that they should grade two points lower and broke them out to send to NGC. Almost every one came back "recolored" and were body bagged. Be fore warned about buying anything from that outfit or in that slab. tgilm

Breaking Out - Part Three

NNC and ICG crossing over to the other side. Well, lets start with the NNC (National Numismatic Certification) slabs, which are sold on eBay by seller- Centles. Never had a problem with Centles as far as service, but I knew that the grading was going to be high compared with NGC or PCGS. I would always purchase from him thinking that the coin was at least 2 grades lower than what the slab said. I sent in 2 NNC slabs and here's what I got back. Sent in was a 1967 Ireland 1/2 crown NNG-66 and it

The "Cashless Society" and the Fate of "Real" Money

I sometimes worry that "real" money will be lost in antiquity Next to my computer keyboard is a small pile of coins my wife accumulated before I ever arrived in her life. There are 3 wheat back pennies and a 1964 dime. It's a fitting collection of coins for me as 1964 is the last year that "real" money was made..that is money containing silver and the pennies are actually solid copper. And this is what made American currency unique. I remember growing up in Detroit, and not at all far

double prosperity 08 08 2008

the mint missed a golden opportunity. Had the U.S. mint kept track of their production of the coins in the double prosperity sets to make sure that they were indeed produced on 08 08 2008, then they would have had a compelling set to collect. Also by limiting the number of sets to that day's production, the set would have been made more desirable. The ideal way would be to over strike those coins with 08 08 2008. But that would have literally taken an act of Congress, if I'm correct, not to m
