NGC Journals

3rd submission this month

I have done well hope it continues Some of my Internet coin buying experiences and adviceThis being my third and last submission of the month it is in the Early Bird tier and consists of My Dolly Madison 1st spouse coins and three Mercury dimes for my new short set it is also my coupon submission. I went though my raw dimes and picked out the three best ones, so I will see if I have learned any thing. The first one I sent in was for my U.S. commems and all were MS69. The $5 GAE came back MS70.

Those Lean Years ... and again?

The Great Depression resulted in a great disruption in the mintage of several American denominations As we head further into what several predict will be hard times, there are many who look back to the Great Depression for a point of comparison. Something that I don't think all coin collectors think about though, is the impact that this event had on our grand hobby. The penny is the big winner. It was produced, usually by 2 mints, every year through the early 1930s. This is most likely becau

Could use some expert help on this one....

Ive never seen this before and hoping that someone with more knowlege could help me out. I recently purchased a 08 Bald Eagle $1 on the bay in MS 70. I made the mistake of assuming that the picture in the listing was that of the coin I bought. Anyway....When I got the coin home I immediately noticed that on the obverse at about 11 and 2 o?clock there was blackness, for lack of a better word (see picture below), on the rim. I have never seen a MS 70 coin with this kind of negative eye appeal

US Mint

Is it a one way street? I notice that when precious metal prices rise the US Mint suspend sales, but when price fall they are reluntant to do the same, in that lower prices. In the last month platinum per ounce has fallen about $300 from $2,085 to $1,785 but the one ounce uncirculated remains at $2,349.95. I beleive that when you trade in precious metal you not only take the upside potential but also the downside risk.

The Peace Dollar is born

Pittman act of 1918 government waste or stroke of genius Key Pittman was a senator from the state of Nevada and the author of the Pittman Act. Looking out for the working men of his state. He proposed a way for the Mints to get rid of the unpopular millions of Silver dollars that were stored away in bank vaults. yes the unpopular Morgan dollar(Don't we wish we had some time alone in those vaults.) The act decreed that not to exceed 350,000,000 standard silver dollars be melted cast in to bars

A Type of Peace

Coming to terms with the Peace dollar? I?ve read the posts by more than one person on more than one occasion talking about how much they love the peace dollar. When asked, my step-father (fellow collector) will tell you that he prefers the Peace dollar to the Morgan. Sometimes I almost feel like I?m the only one who prefers the Morgan (though, based on the number of registry sets, I can't be). There are several historical reasons why I tend to dislike the idea of the Peace dollar. I look at

Look Mom, A Bright Shiny Object for You

What a coin may inspire As a toddler, or so I am told, I would take my new discoveries to my mother. Being so young everything was new. So I would walk up, object in hand, and say "Wass dat?" She would examine my prize and give me a word. I am told I would do this perhaps a dozen times a day, day after day, endlessly. She never tired or showed any frustration over my constant "Wass dat?" As time passed I would bring gifts to my mother that I thought she might enjoy: a sea shell, a figurine

Trying to Keep the Right Perspective

From the mouths of babes........ It think it might be time for all of us to take a deep breath and reflect on 1) why we got involved in coin collecting 2) why we show off our collections to our peers and more specifically, 3) why we share our thoughts with others by making journal entries. The teaser refers to a journal entry by Noah Pardee, who just happens to be 9 years old and had to ask his father if he could join the registry and write a journal entry. Imagine his excitement as the whole

Observations On Several Things

I'm not even going to get to my Specimen Note research... This journal article is sort of an update, some observations and just plain straight talk on what I've been up to. Jackson had sent me a message a few days ago, indicating he at least would be interested in hearing what I have been up to, since I hadn't posted any journal articles for a while. (Jackson, hope you don't mind that I used this, felt it would give a little explanation.) So thanks Jackson, for your interest at least. As I t

What a Journal Entry should be?

Some of the members are missing the point of the journal. According to NGC is should be the following and note no where do is say personal attacks on other members. We have some simple guidelines for Journal entries. The Journal feature is designed to allow our members to share their collecting journey with other members. We hope that over time our members find that they've been able to use these journals as a way to share a kind of diary with other collectors, and can look back over their ent

Coin Photography Workshop

Great Salt Lake City Area....FREE!!! CEASE FIRE!!! Enough of the hostilities already. I say this because I already had my shot and it gets boring after much more than that. On a lighter side.... I will be hosting/conducting a small coin photograpy workshop that is open to the public and free of charge. This will take place at the Davis County Library, North branch in Clearfield, Utah. This saturday, July 26 from 4pm until 6pm. I realize not everyone has access to a digital camera, or

Of course that is what they do! & Try the Bufflao Nickel Short Set!

The 1934 - 1938-D Buffalo Nickel Short Set Paul is correct all NGC does is look at your coins!. A neat set to collect that wont break the bank is the 1934 to 1938-D Buffalo nickel short set. You can find most of the coins in MS66 or better and it is certainly a "Classic Coin". You also don't have to worry about the millions of Moderns that are sitting out there that will inflate the numbers of MS69 & MS70's and drop the value over time. The Buffalo nickels were struck for circulation. Mo

Upgrading, downgrading, equal cross grading

Lesson learned A lesson to be learned about crossover grading. There is a section on the submission form that I always write in if I am sending a crossover. Something to the affect of "Grade and encapsulate coins regardless of grade or appearance." This bit me once on one coin that I sent in was a PCI PF-67 Cameo. I purchased the coin as a PF-66 (not cameo) but I forgot to say on my submission to disregard the cameo designation. The coin came back with a note that said, "Not cameo". I n

Paul Coolit There are a lot of Gramps out there!

You being anger at NGC shouldn't taken out on Silver Dollar! It sounds to me that you think that NGC should call you on every submission you send in! I doubt that NGC would have the time to call everyone that sends in a couple of coins! Maybe you think your better than everyone else or maybe just us gramps'ssss!

Re: NGC ripped me off....

Possibly Mr. Kraly should learn to read. I refer to the back of the submission form that explains the different grading services. And I quote "Crossover Coins from other grading services are reviewed for NGC certification at the same grade. coins will not be removed from their holder if they cannot be graded at the or higher NGC grade.
