Broke Down and Bought the Key Coin to Complete the Set

Completed my $10 Proof Platinum Eagle set Tomorrow, I will go to the PO and pickup my latest acquisition. A graded 2004 $10 Platinum Eagle. It is the key coin of the set with only 3,171 minted (as I understand it, if this is wrong, please let me know!). This is one of those eBay good buys. I paid $787 for the coin which PCGS price guide shows its value at $1050. Numismedia shows a value of $970. Now if I can only get out of the office in time to get home and to the PO before it closes. When is it something more?

The issue of emotional ownership of the set... When I first started to try and build a certified set of silver eagles about a year ago, I noticed that there were several dealers that would sell the entire series as a set. This option was actually in some cases cheaper than buying the coins 1 by 1. At the time I could have not bought any of them, saved up the cash and bought them as a set. In the final analysis, it would have saved me about $200, but I'm glad I didn't do it. It occured to me

Anyone out there?

Too much time, too little money Haven't a clue as what I am doing. Maybe some kind person will be my friend . All I know is I started collecting about 8 months ago and have a lot of coins. Have 3 books filled with nothing but proof sets (1968 to present) a bunch of Morgans (I think I am missing a whole lot more as I have about 29 so far), Commemoratives, Eagles, amd misc. stuff. I did purchase a red book to help me with bidding on e-bay but I THINK I made a couple of good deals but how would

A GREAT DEAL!!

I almost felt like I stole it! I got a great deal on this 1992 Columbus 50c commemorative. I won the auction on Ebay and it went for only $6.65!! If you keep an eye out...there are deals to be found! Jeffrey

Starting a New Set

not sure of grade range I'm shooting for As much as I enjoy the freedom I get with a signature set, I still love albums and building a registry set. I am still one coin shy of completing my Walking Liberty Half short set. The 1941-S, as I've mentioned before, is a bit pricey in the quality I want so that it matches the strike and luster of the other coins in the set. I get an annual residual payment/check every November which I've decided to earmark for my 41-S ( plus I'm hoping that I might g

Modern Coins vs Vintage Coins

I am just back from Vacation and would like to add my thoughts on this subject If you look at my registry collections you would see that most of them are modern sets. Yet the center piece is my complete set of Peace Dollars. The raw collections that I own include no modern coins. I think that the value of the modern coins are very low in most cases unless they are certified at a high grade. I like to submit coins for grading and at least for me the chances are better of getting high grades on

Safe Deposit Boxes vs. Home Safes

Which is safer? Pun is too obvious, sorry. Ok, this poster raises interesting questions which everyone should think about, but I will add some more to the mix. When considering safe deposit boxes, there are more things to think about than just the safety of your coins. First, let me comment on the earlier message from Paul Kiraly insofar as the IRS doing audits and perhaps questioning the contents of the box and so on. I understand that the IRS may audit bank accounts, but I cannot imagi

Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program

My local banks have droped the ball on President Dollars I was looking at a way to get First day of issue on the President Dollars. The banks in my area are no longer ordering new Dollars ahead of time to have on hand the President Dollars on the day of release. Now I have to go to the secondary market to get my NGC graded coins. This is costing me hundreds of dollars per set. It looks as if the mint is going to save the day with the cirulating coin direct shippment program. But I have look a

October can't come Soon Enough

I am tirelessly paying down the credit cards to be able to make a large submission I feel a little left out lately as I have not made any NGC submissions lately, and I miss the thrill of waiting for and watching the coins go through the grading process. BUT there will be a large submission made in October when I can get the credit cards down a little more...most of the charges are coin related. I am going to be getting into pennies more and Peace Dollars, as well as finishing the Silver Eag

8 New Coins and No Points

I'm low in the rankings I just received 8 new coins that I will be entering into my registry. Two were from recent auction wins and 6 were returned from NGC slabbing/submission. ** A quick note: my Modern coin submission took exactly 10 business days just as NGC lists--always great service even if I had hoped for better grades*** Anyhow, these 8 coins will be going into my signature set-High Seas with my sailing ship themed coins. I now have over 200 coins in my registry but only about 40 of

some type of old presidential set ?

Has anyone ever seen one of these before? Found at a yard sale thought to be old , the book that they are in says on edge coin collection of presidents, and has a picture of the statue of liberty on front of book, it has a coin for every pres, from washingtion to roosevelt, and on the back tells a little about each one. Just wondering if someone can tell me more about these. Thanks.

Independence Day

Liberty and Justice for ALL!! We Americans or more specifically the citizens of the United States of America have more blessings than anyone on Earth. You can thank God (as I do) or Allah or your lucky stars for those blessings but no matter who you thank, we have them. We can whine (with a little cheese) about rising gas prices and the like, or falling home prices ect, but you know... we are lucky. we HAVE gas to buy, we HAVE a home to live in, we HAVE all that we could want or need. We hav

Never Satisfied

Maybe it's the perfectionist in me.... After just over a year on the registry I've come to one inescapable conclusion about myself: What I do is never good enough. The pictures I take of my coins are never quite as good as they could be, the descriptions on my sets and coins are so lame but I never change them because all alternatives seem equally bad, the text of my bio could be much better written (but at what point does it become too long and at what point am I sharing too much informati

Protect yourself (all collectors society members)

Why a safety deposit box? I dont know why you would have a safety deposit box.If you get audited by the IRS for any reason they can put a stop on all bank accounts and safety deposit boxes. And then the fun begins when you have to answer questions about any rare coins you have.Transactions for checks,And how you can afford these coins on your salary, with kids, bills, ect.I spent 700.00 on a big beautiful fireproof gun safe.I took those weird shelves out and replaced thim with 3/4 inch thick plybo

Happy Independence Day!!

But I'd never want to be "independent" of my collection!! Looks like in the USA we'll be celebrating another year of independence as we have been doing since 1776. If my quick calculations are correct, that means "we" have officially been a country for about 232 years. And a very young country in comparison to England, France, Greece, Italy. Those countries were already "around" hundreds of years before "we" ever came to be. There are homes, places of business in these other countries that ar

RE: Rare?

That's a journal entree Well I must say that PSL journal entree was one of the most interesting one I have reading in a long time. It showed to me what the journals are really meant for, the study of numismatics. I commend him and I hope more people will bring these types of numismatics journals to this forum. I would love to hear more stories like this. Its what makes it all worth while. Thanks PSL Keep it coming

Rare?

What makes a coin or medal rare? Is it the total population, the graded population, or the avalible population? This is a question that is always on my mind. I tend to believe it is the avalible population. Since regardless of the mintage the surviving population is the true degree of rarity. I know the graded population and the grade play a role in this as well. The problem I have is that since I primarily collect historical medals sometime finding the total mintage is extremely hard at time

Who cares about the price of oil!

Who cares about the price of oil! So I have been looking around at some news and chat boards and have seen that for the 2010 year the mint is going to make a commem set for the solar system. Each planet gets a silver $1 and the sun gets a full one ounce gold $50, for an estimated price of about $1,900 on todays gold and silver prices. That makes 9 silver $1's and a gold $50 just for that set, along with the 2010 wounded soldier's silver $1. Lets not forget the new '09 ultra high relief double

The Coin of the Month for July

And the coin of the month for July is... I am not sure how many months I will be able to do this, but I do have a coin of the month for July. It is an 1862 3c piece, graded MS-65 by NGC. It has nice russet & blue-green toning and was struck with heavily clashed dies. It is also very lusterous.
