As we speak (ok...type). Thought I would share some pointers for those interested.
As coin collectors it is only natural to want to show off our coins. This can be a real pain as alot of us keep our coins locked in a safe deposit box. Some have their coins stashed away at home in a nice safe, as do I. But in either case it can be a pain to drag them out. This is where coin photograpy can be a real blessing. Once imaged and saved, we only have to clickey-click the mouse a couple of times an
I picked up 5 in the last few weeks.
Since I have started collecting the MS SAE a couple months back, I have been lucky enough to pick up about 5 coins a month. Most of them are MS69 with a couple of MS70s to add a bit of flavor. I wish I started collecting these back when I started with the proofs. Both types of coins are incredible and I tip my hat to the Mint for starting such a wonderful series!
Here is the latest Eagle I received today.
Enjoy your collection and good luck with the gra
Interchangable?
Does anyone know if NGC will re-designate a coin labeled First Strikes as Early Releases? I beleive they both had to be submitted within 30 days of release.
read me!!!!
Earlier this year i wrote that the mint would be introducing fractional 24kt gold buffalo coins that will replace the gold american eagle series. well, on 7/22/08 the fractional buffalos went on sale. i think 2009 or 2010 will be the last year of the gold american eagle series. i say this based on the fact that the eagles have been minted for 23 years and historically 25 years is the average mintage for a gold coin series. also, the U.S. needs to mint 24kt gold coins to market a wo
have anyone had experience send coins to auction house like heritage or others?
I'm thinking of sending a number of coins in my huge collection to be auctioned off. i guess what i'm asking is is it a good idea?
The reverse shows the well known AMERIJA, likely due to the "I" punch breaking before they used it.
Interesting fact is that the REVERSE of THIS coin is the same REVERSE of the fabulously rare 1817/4 (I believe one is being auctioned by Heritage in Baltimore). Well, if you have one of these, at least you have half of an 1817/4!
For anyone interested in a couple of closeups (this and the next journal entry).
Closeup of the date on the 181.7 50C. Thought not to be an actual overdate, rather, just an error in keeping the working die free from any damages (like someone poking a small hole in it and mystifying collectors for the next 150 years).
See the Reverse shot in the next journal entry.
Photos of the full obverse and reverse are in my Capped Bust set if you'd like to view them.
my trained tells these coins might have got a raw deal in grading
Should i break these out and resubmit them again, because either i'm missing something or they did I don't see anything wrong with them that they should get these grades? well i can't show you a picture here. ok here's my delima I have two roosevelt dimes one a 1962-D and the other a 2000-S. the 62 is graded ms 68 the 2000 is graded pr-69 the both look better then that.
Awesome ebay buy may not be so awesome
First Coinworld prices are very high second SGS doesn't grade anything lower than a MS70 It is probably MS65 If your lucky. Sorry but true.
I looked at Over 300 Mercury Dimes today trying to find three that were better than the ones I final sent in my latest submission and couldn't find one. So we will see how mine come out. One more word on Grading think I can tell what an MS 64 is but after that they all look pretty much the same. To me anyway.
Sorry for the double post today....
Well, I order a very big coin for a very big set and the seller sends in out the very next day, express mail. The package should have arrived yesterday. When it didn't, and it didn't arrive today, we started asking questions of the local post office. It turns out that they had in fact tried to deliver the package on Thursday..... just at the wrong house.... on a different street.
A $3000 insured package and they take it to the wrong house... there are days

Only Mine - Everyone has One!!
If you believe you have a NGC coin that is under-graded, you can re-submit (in orginal holder) for an appearance review. I assume PCGS offers something similar. If the coin is other than a PCGS or NGC many will say it probably received high or overstated grade. Although I believe that ANACS and ICG have some excellent and expert graders, these labels and grades aren't as widely accepted by many collectors. In other words all grades by all grading services are no
Now this the kind of buy I think worth all the research and time a good collector invests.
now I happened to be channel surfing ebay the other day and look what my mouse found. I often surf ebay when I'm board as I get sometimes when i can find anything to do well let me make this short I WAS looking for some perfect coin as they call them thoe i rarely buy such things i just could not pass up this one I have collected every state Quarter sence the programs inception and I'm just waiting on th
I filled the last hole in and "completed" my 21st Century Type Set.
I put the quotes around completed because I have all the coins that are currently part of the set (as NGC defines it) but I know there will be more coins added on later that I'll have to get as they come out. 2009 could bring 2 or 3 slots because of the new pennies, the change in the Sacagawea and the moving of the mottos in the Pres bucks. There might be a 4th new one in '09 is the territorial quarters get their own slot. In
My #2 Buffalo Nickel Set!
I am down to the 1937-D 3 leg and the 1918/7-D! I can't seem to quit buying for my registry set to finish my "Library of Coins" album. I decided to use the 50 year old sulfur laden paper "LOB" album for my set. The reason is the toning the album gives the coins over time. I just checked the album today and noticed several of the Buffalo's were taking on a pleasing blue and amber colors.
"What You Need to Know - About Coin Collecting"
When you click on to the NGC Chat Boards the first forum is "What You Need to Know - About Coin Collecting". There is a wealth of information there! I would suggest to anyone having trouble with any area of coin collecting to check out the posts there.
It would look to me that anyone who is getting body bag after body bag would welcome any help he could get? It costs a ton to get coins graded. Why waste your money if you don't have to?

Do you seriously believe the answers if they are already intentional in deceiving you?
Pictures paint a thousand words but its only a thousand...we need more thousands please...
Even if you are able to smell a rat, recognise a fake "Mickey Mouse", differentiate between "Mickey" and "Minnie", its your words vs his. Slabbing it would be easier than a verbal war.
Just had a look at the feedback and I realise that the seller's ratings is 40k+ instead of 10k+! My memory doe
Questions,Questions, Questions
as someone who has collected coins for 47 years here is what i've learned if you buy on ebay as i often do never be afraid to ask the seller Questions and if you don't like their answers don't buy their coins. if you want more detailed photos ask for them.
I have found my new path but it is in an old direction.
As most young collectors I started out collecting circulated coins. I always managed to have a paper route, so there was no shortage of change to go thru. Pennies, nickels, and dimes were the coins that I collected. Quarters and halves were way to much money to be collecting and silver dollars were birthday gifts from grandparents. The silver dollars that I got were Peace dollars. At that time I had no idea that the coins that I was coll
Maybe this isn't the place for coin submission BB's maybe this is?
Numismatic Tangents on the Chat Boards would be a better place to bash eBay sellers. One of the things the Journal is for is sharing your experiences. Surely being burned is an experience we have all had in trying to assemble our collections. I have been burned on the last two coin purchases from sellers on eBay myself. Although, I didn't have to wait until I sent the coin to NGC to find out that I had been had!
If you can
My local coin dealer called them....
Garbage. Thats what a local coin dealer called one of my favorite coins. Yes, thats right he said that the American Silver Eagles are garbage.
Now, I know there are a lot of very nice and ugly (in my eyes) coins out there, but I was told to "collect what you like!" and ASEs are what I like. I know they are modern but, I am new to collecting and it is what caught my eye. After telling me that, the dealer then proceeded to pull out some very nice seated li

saw an earlier post on this and I thought I would like to add something of my own...
imagine buying a coin from a canadian seller with over 10k of positive feedback...he seems reputable enough to write in the title that the coin is graded MS.
He added a disclaimer that he will only accept return if the coin is slabbed and graded otherwise. Fine with me since everyone's opinion is different.
But lo and behold! The coin came back graded XF45 and is slabbed in N
Will probably stay #2 unless WestCoast forgets to pay his Collector's Society Dues
Well....it is finally complete! The 1940 proof set. The final piece was a 1940 Walking Liberty Half in PF68. While I can take solace in being #2, it has been a challenge putting this set together in these grades.
I still have to decide if I am going to get these re-holdered with a pedigree. Perhaps "Not quite the best" or "Pretty Good"? I am happy with them regardless.
