Re: Disillusioned

Even TPG graders are human and that is the problem !!!!!! We can all agree or disagree with the grades that we pay the professianals for, however we all must remember that it is an opinion that we are paying for and opinions differ. I have read about studies done where 3 or 6 or 9 different coins, the number really doesn't matter were systematicly sent to both NGC and PCGS for grading and then comparing the results and time and time again the results varied. I have read in the journals many co

unwanted coins

Well it's happning again Earlier this afternoon i recieved my most resent copy of coinworld Magazine and their was an article on the new presidential dollars and just as with SBA,SACS, the lates in dollar coins has lost it's appeal even banks are not interested in ordering these coins even for those who collect them so why does the mint continue to issue coins like these to the public just release them for collecter and stop wasting time and money.

Bust Quarters and New Books Coming

These are ready to explode... As some of you may have noticed, Bust Quarters have now been going up steadily for the last two months or so. People are just starting to realize how hard these quarters are to find. If you go to the population report for them there are only a handful grading for each year. Some years have only 15 graded and you have to assume some of these are crack-outs and re-submitted. Bust Quarters are already on the move and are going to explode when these new books come out

The Heritage Baltimore ANA Auction

Is the coin market slowing down or did things not sell well because of summmer and people on vacations? The auction realized almost $27,000,000 but there were plenty of coins that did not sell well at all. I was watching some coins that I was shocked that did not sell for more. One of them was a 1845 NGC 65 Seated Quarter (picture attached) with amazing color and it only sold for a little over $5000 when it should have brought more like $7000-$8000. There was also 1837 NGC MS62 Bust Quarter th

Flea Market Find

The first coin I actually bought at a flea Market. I actually haven't seen that many. Saturday while walking around the Flea Market i saw some Commemorative coins for sale and bought a 2002W West Point silver dollar in the OGP for $2 over melt. It will be the first coin of my next submission. Speaking about submissions the one that was received on 7-28-08 hit Quality control today 6 working days with a turn around time of 21 days their must be a real backup in Quality Control. Interesting diatribe at the NGC table at the ANA World's Fair of Money

Body bagged and upset The ANA's "World's Fair of Money" show in Baltimore allowed me to fill some holes in my Morgan dollar collection but I came up empty on my early proof coins. One of my purchases was an 1885-CC GSA Morgan which is a beautiful proof like coin. I think that it is MS-63 PL which would be an upgrade for me, especially given the extra points for the GSA holder. We will see soon enough. While filling out the paperwork to have it graded at the show, a belligerent eastern Eur

Better image 1825 Half Sovereign obverse

Nice.. they did a good job ! Would be great if it showed the prooflike appearance, however the text in the right page about the coin states well struck throughout, polished dies giving a somewhat prooflike appearance, and only minor scattered contact marks

NGC Photo Proofs received - 1825 Half Sovereign

Lovely ! great work NGC I was very pleased to receive the photo proofs today I ordered, pity the coin and its friends got stuck in customs again ! declared amount was under GST limit (they are exempt anyway since I sent them out in the first place!) but they still got stuck ! grr.. I will have to write to NGC and ask about their shipping forms, there must be something that can be done. Having to go down to pick them up is not fun ! Beautiful though.. it came from Goldberg pre Long Beach or

Early Releases vs. Plain Label

Buying what you like Since the creation of Early Releases labeled coins, and the lawsuit/settlement involving First Strikes, I've heard many arguments, the most frequent of which is that it is a marketing ploy on behalf of the grading company. In fairness, I'll point out that PCGS still issues First Strike coins, with a qualification on the label not dissimilar to the cards issued by NGC about their Early Releases designation coins. First, I'll also mention other "special" labels available:

Economics 101

Collecting vs. Investing In my humble opinion the main difference between collecting and investing is that a collector collects whatever pleases HIM/HER, whereas an investor collects whatever will please THEM (other people). Investors tend to be a bit harder to satisfy and a bit more picky perhaps because they are trying to predict the value of a particular coin in the future (near term or distant). Investors will primarily stay with the tried and true; Morgan S$, Walking Liberty halves, '

Keeping a Peaceful Mind in an Overwhelming Hobby

It's easy to get distracted by all the options. Here's how I keep peaceful and focused. Greetings again!! Having read some entries as of late, I started thinking about the complexities and personal trials I have encountered in my collecting life. There truly have been some very high peaks and some low points along the way, and God knows there have been times (as lately) where I want to acquire more than the wallet (or credit) can deliver. There have been bouts of sheer happiness, and p

Re: More Questions - No Answers Revisted!!

"Early Release" and "First Strike" are marketing ploys. "First Strike" and "Early Release" are nothing more then marketing ploys by NGC and PCGS. NGC was sued over First Strike and has settled the case and they no longer do it. It is posted on NGC's web site. The US Mint has stated that they do not number their coins as they are minted. For example...if they project 1 million proof SAE to be minted and sold, about 50% will already have been minted before they even go on sale the first of the y

Re: More Questions - No answers Revisted

Last Comment for this Hobby. I don't disagree one bit with banknote1. You should buy the coin and not the holder. But it?s a fact of life that people do and pay high dollars for it and people profit from it. I just believe there are too many questions that I have that cannot be answered to my satisfaction (labels, grading services, large submitters vs. small submitters). I can argue them all!! I believe there is much diversity in this hobby and until there is some regulation, whether its s

2008 1oz Proof Buffalo

Have you looked close at the new 2008W PF Buffalos? I just received my new 2008W $50 Buffalo NGC PF70 and I noticed something funny about it today. I was comparing it to the 2006 & 2007, what I found was 2008 had less detail on the Indian head , it looks like the relief of the coin is much lower and showing a more frosty like appearance. I think the US Mint changed the hub a little bit to match the fractionals because maybe the fractionals had problems with a higher relief and detail (th

Re: More Questions - No Answers Revisted!!

Where did "buy the coin not the holder" go? First Strikes or Early Releases. I know I am as dumb as a house plant. But if the two coins were side by side with the slab labels covered up could anyone be able to tell the difference between the two coins? Doesn't the SAE that makes it to NGC on the 31st day look just like the SAE that arrives on the 29th? I fail to see the reason in this except for NGC who is making tons of money on this insanity! That is just my opinion. I purchsed this coin f

RE: My massive July in Review

A whole lot to do about nothing. Not as a comment on either journal writers, but one of observation not just from July but from 2008. First the mint offers a "celebration" 1 ounce buffalo, different packaging, but already in the market. In fact NGC would not give an early release on this coin because it has already been released for 30 days. Now we have a "double prosperity set" same coins elsewhere, again different packaging. Is the mint in the business of manufacturing coins or seeing how

nice finds at the ANA World's Fair of Money This journal entry has the potential to turn into a loooong entry so I'm gonna cut to the highlights. I awoke this morning like a kid on Christmas--the reason being that I had planned the past month to attend the ANA World's Fair of Money up the road in Baltimore this weekend. I awoke early but had to wait to leave until 10AM because my younger daughter needed a ride to her summer job. I've been to numismatic events at the Baltimore Convention

August? Already????????

This year has FLOWN by!! Greetings!! Quite a fast and eventful year for a lot of journalists here!! I have been reading the many acquisitions and have been dreaming of my own. I am looking forward to 2009, though and am wondering (still) if the Mint will produce a 40 Year Moon Landing Comemm. I am hoping so, and will be among the first people to buy. I think that was a very exciting time for the world and feel strongly that era should be preserved via coin mintage. October is fast a

July in Review

My coin purchases for July July was another good month for my collection. I was able to pick up 11 coins for my collection. 6 of the coins were SAEs and the other 5 were modern commemoratives. I have really been on a roll lately buying the Silver Eagles. I bought 5 of them graded MS-69 and 1 ungraded proof. 3 of the commemoratives are ungraded. I will be sending in the coins this month to NGC and I believe (and hope) that 2 of the commemoratives have a chance for 70s. This month I am looki
