Never quit before you try!

I guess this time I got lucky... I was searching the net, when I found out about this guy on another coin forum who said he used a website service to save over 20% off his eBay purchases based on the sellers fees. I thought that sounded pretty good, so next thing you know I've signed up for some cheesy sounding website called Bigcrumbs. I was starting to regret it, but I knew I had to give it a chance to prove itself. So I went ahead and bought me a nice toned Morgan dollar I had my eye on for

Back from Vacation!

and coins coming back from NGC I just got back from spending 2 weeks at Trinity Lake. We did a week of camping and a week on a houseboat with jet skis. For those who are not familiar with the area, the lake is located in Northern California about a hour west of Redding/Lake Shasta area. The lake is as low as I have seen it in the last 3 decades. But we were still able to go to our favarite spot to park the houseboat and enjoy the water. There was still some smoke in the area from all the fires

1st 6 months

How I spent the 1st 6 months, spent more money than I should and loved every moment of it. This journal you may not find very interesting, but I wanted do document (what I can rember) of my 1st 6 months of being a member. I have been collecting silver eagle's from 2007 (missing a fue years) and really got my start with the Statue of Libery comm. In 1999 I started with the quarters and in 2000 started with the full proof set (to get the Sac) I have loved finding out what my collection c

adding WTC revovery coins to the registry...

I found the answer but it might not be the answer that i was looking for...(a pun on the rhythm and blues song) After looking up the topic on PCGS' board, I found several posts on this topic. It seems that the early coins were encapsulated by their collector's society, I think that it's called collector's universe, rather than PCGS, but using PCGS holders. If that's not enough to confuse a collector, I'm not sure what is. Apparently that is the reason for the absence of the bar code. THEN P

Breaking Out - Part Two

Some results of my crack outs. On 7/19/08 in my journal I told of how I cracked out all my odd slabs (PCI,SEGS,NNC,ANACS,FTGS, and ICG) and sent them into NGC to see how they would do. The first invoice was posted on the web the other day and here are the results. I had 4 PCI slabs that were all graded at least 8 years ago and I agreed with the grades. My Ireland 1939 farthing started out as a PCI-63RB and came back as a NGC-65RB, nice bump up of 2 grades. It does have great eye appeal and

Rare Coin University

Get your degree today! I don't normally plug a website in my journal entries but this is a real winner. Austin Rare Coins has a Rare Coin University that I believe will help anyone collecting coins to be more focused, know what to buy and when, and allow all of us to put our limited resources to our best use. This is not a plug to buy their coins, but I've found the info to be invaluable. I wish I'd read this before I started collecting/investing. I certainly hope this passes the test of

US Mint coin prices

US Mint needs a good arm twisting and lower their coin prices! I've been checking the silver, gold & platinum prices, they are dropping down! down! down! Today silver is at $12.85, gold at $785.50 and platinum is at $1384.00. I hope the US Mint is aware of this because at this time their coin prices are way over the melt price. Lets all hope that the Us Mint will adjust these prices soon.   Happy Collecting! Jimmie

Buffalos & Eagles

TIME TO CUT THE CORD! Just a question for NGC. Since the Gold Buffalos have become a mint production coin like the Gold Eagles, When will they be totally on their own and taken off the Gold Eagle registry?

Nice new feature I just discovered!

In the Gallery, if you click on the image or "Enlarge".... the image now telescopes out nice and smooth. It gives a nice view of the image. Previously clicking on "enlarge" and after it enlarged, images didn't look as nice as it does now! Kudos to NGC for this recent website feature upgrade!

The Package and the Coin

Both seem to be important to me Lately I have been having an inner debate about what really makes a coin desirable to me for collecting, and I have found that I really like the package AND the coin. Especially if "the package" is an NGC holder witha grade 69 or better SAE or Proof SAE. The coin is definately a main contributor to my initial attention as I love the Proof SAE's and MS SAE's. Now, this also goes for my other favorite coins, the Proof Prezzies, BUT the packaging HAS to b

Acquisitions

Winged Liberty Head Dimes have been keeping me busy.. Dear Journal: Since we last spoke I have been busy gathering Mercury Dimes for the short set, that I started two weeks ago. I have been having so much fun that I just may turn it in to a long set but that is a story for later. Now back to the short set. All the coins that I have picked up so far have been surprisingly to me fairly inexpensive. The first one I acquired was a MS66 1945 micro S a very nice example. I had a 1942 unc coin in my

US mint shipment 20 mints review

the good and bad Recieved my order of 20 us mint sets. hers what I found. There are both possition A and B on the presidential dollars. Most of the nickles have rim flaws. The Sacajaweas are nice but have the face scuff marks, only 6 were of the MS-67 areas. all P cents have distorted memorial building steps with a few having sharp 4-5 bottom steps. D mints were extra sharp and will grade high. State quarters are fantastic, sharp, miner scuffs and all will grade high. the halves are so-so agai

Raw or Not that is the question...

I love Raw coins, there is nothing like getting up close and personal with your coins, but... I have decided to part with most of my Raw coinage that I don't think would pass the NCG/PCGS standards. I am sending several of them in for grading and plan on using the proceeds of the raw coins to purchase already graded coins. I am having a blast with the Registery set. I do plan on purchasing Raw coinage, that I feel would grade out so watch out! Stay tuned and have fun!

Australia Lunar proof series

Not MS but proofs from Perth. I've not seen any of these listed in the US as panda America, to my knowledge only carries the MS issues. I currently own a year of the Dragon year 2000 2 oz. proof, mintage of Proof issue was limited to 1000 coins per the coin cert. My coin is certified numbered to be no 826/1000. This coin is just the opposite of the MS version with frosted devices like the US silver proof eagles with mirror fields. I ordered direct from perth. I currently have the year of th

NGC 1/10 Fractional Proof Buffalo

I received mine, still no where to add it! I have recieved my 1/10 oz Gold Buffalo. It is pictured below. You may ask what is all that stuff around the Indians Head? Well, the fields around the Indian has a hammered look to it. On the reverse, the fields around the buffalo are not hammered. It has "normal" proof fields.

The Double Prosperity Set

Think I would pass... So I got an email from the mint touting the new "Double Prosperity Set" Comemmerating 8-8-08. Looks like 2 coins already in mintage in new packaging. I dunno....seems like those who already have the coins are just as well off without the "new" set. And those without the coins are probably not going to buy this one. I, too am desperately awaiting new ideas from the Mint.

Olympic Coinage

worldwide Olympic commems available I have no interest in another "niche" within numismatics...but I always thought that Olympic coins from around the world (and the USA) would make a challenging and fun signature set to assemble. When I first started my signature set I wanted to do a themed set--and of something that I love. To be honest, my first thoughts were of a set called "Beautiful Women of Coinage". There are some absolutely dazzling coins with wonderful female figures---the St Ga

Working toward the Gold

My collection Over the last month or so I have added several new commemorative coins to my set, and just yesterday bought the 2007 ms70 little rock . So look forward to adding it to my set soon. And over the last couple weeks has been a really hard time in my life, as I suddenly lost my step-father on the 20th of july, He was a very special person in my life to me as well as my two boys, he will be sadly missed by all, then just 5 days later lost my grandmother who was 96 ye

Started down the crazy road

I have started sending in submissions, and other updates I just sent in my first submission. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed but I'm not going to bother with speculation on the grades I'll get. There are 2 invoices on the submission. 1 is a 56 coin modern submission and the other is using the 5 coin freebie coupon for some older material (mostly 19th century). I say "started down the crazy road" because of all the twists and turns and ups and downs to grading, especially went it comes to

New selection to my Classic Head half cent set.

Guess the grade if you will. I just purchased a 1833 Half Cent from ebay and it fits well in my collection. The obverse and reverse are both very well struck and nice coloring. What do you think that it graded? Do you think PCGS or NGC do a better job at grading these series? I think PCGS and NGC are very similar in their grading of Indian Head cents business and proof strikes. This series is not to expensive to put together other than the key date 1811. Hope you enjoy and looking forward to
