RIGHT ON AUDROP! The Points system and FMV is WAY outta line!

WOW, I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER MYSELF! Also a close up of my 1849-P Reverse...Collectors, I just read the post by audrop and it took me back to quite a few posts I have made on the same subject. audrop went on to say, politely I might add, that this is just but one mans opinion. But actually I do honestly believe what was said on the FMV and on the points system issue is the view of the vast majority except maybe the collector who has 15-20 sets of Sac Dollars with all of them the sam

California Gold Rush Gold...1849-P $10 Gold Obverse

The vast majority of all gold found during the California gold rush for the first few years, made its way back to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia PA to be minted into coins but some made it to New Orleans and finally the San Fransisco Mint when it was finally constructed. Along with the Carson City Mint too. Greetings Collectors, Having said all of that above, it would be nice to have one of these old gold coins speak of its history and its travels. I do believe that an 1849 $10 gold piece wou

FMV: What does it really mean?

Beware the ides of 'Funny Manipulated Value'. Use TMV instead. Fair Market Value is a farce! I get a kick out of hearing about FMV from collectors. What is FMV? Fair Market Value is the price someone is welling to pay for a given coin at that moment. I don't have any idea where NGC and PCGS come up with their numbers, but if you really want to find out what a coin is worth, go to the auction archives and see what collectors are actually paying for the coin you want to buy. Top 10 Rarest Roosevelt's with Full Torch and Full Band Designations

Here are the 10 rarest Roosevelt dimes that exhibit Full Torch or Full Bands according to NGC and PCGS. REPOSTED TO ADD TO MESSAGE BOARDS I am back and forth on how I feel about the Full Torch and Full Band Designations. On one hand, I think these designations can give a buyer a little more confidence that the Roosevelt dime they are purchasing has a good strike -- even though I have seen enough dimes with just average to below average strikes with all of their torch lines clear, well-defined,

GSA Morgan #2

A Golden Eagle, not a Gold Eagle My second certified GSA Morgan finally arrived today, a 1884-CC graded NGC MS-65, from kryptonitecomics via ebay. I must have looked at a thousand GSA 1884-CC's, graded and raw, on ebay, Heritage, other websites and coin shows. When I started chasing GSA's about a year ago, another CS member, Mr Bo Jingles (who has a spectacular GSA set of his own) advised me to be patient, that there were lots of MS-65's out there. This one stands out from the MS-65 pack

Sorry for not including pics before but here they are now. I really hope this attains the grade I think it will. This quality of Franklin Proof does not come around often it at all and believe me as some here can attest, I have scoured the bushes and continue to in hopes of finding elusive Franklins such as this one. Introduction and Intent

A brief introduction to me and my intentions for journal entries. Greetings journal readers. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Luke. But since I insist on eccentricity, I will write under the name Mr. Smith Guesser. I've only been collecting coins for a few years. And when I first got started, I was all over the place with my collecting. But now I am a much more focused collector, concentrating my collecting efforts today on the silver 1946 to 1964 Roosevelt dime series. Why

Minimalist Collecting

Minimalism hits Registry Collecting. I know I'm not the first one that's needed to downsize a collection. I have figured out that enjoying this fabulous hobby doesn't demand that one be super rich. I've replaced sixty-something coins valued at $100,000 with twenty-three valued at less than $5000. Yes!...a 95% reduction. I believe one can have a terrific collection, yet not spend a fortune. It will mean, for those competing in the Registry, much lower rankings. So what! It's not only ab

Cannot wait to get this one graded

could this be a home run Greetings all; Well in my constant search for Franklin proofs, I have purchased (winning bid) one the finest Franklin proofs I have ever seen. This Franklin (1960) looks like it just came off the dies at the mint. It would rival todays SAE proofs. Oh yes and fantastic frost on the devices. I cannot wait to get this one graded. Of course with all that being said I hope I just didnt jinx this beauty. good luck to everyone on the judging of your sets.

Shield Pennies

What am I missing? Good day all, I'm still a rookie in the coin collecting field. As such, I'm starting out with small and careful steps. I have noticed the selling prices of the shield pennies from 2010 and up, both MS and PF going for some big dollars and for the life of me I do not know why. What am I missing? Happy collecting! Managed to grab #3!

I have met my goal for my Lincoln 1959-Date set for the second year in a row. With the help of more than 10 individuals, eBay, and yes even Teletrade I added 28 coins (14 top pops and 14 second pops, including 3 MS69RD coins) and 10,717 points to my registry set from July 1 to November 30 of this year. This just to go from 5th ranked to 3rd, but oh how good it feels to be there. I had to overcome two great competitors, dcg (now in 4th) and codrobin (now in 5th) to garner this achievement.

Do your homework!

Avoid being a collecting whore. After reading a post from W.K.F. recently, I was reminded of my collecting 'beginnings'. I was so enamored with the trinkets that the mint was selling and their proof surfaces, that I wound up buying some 'pretty' worthless stuff. I remembered my grandmother buying mint sets in the sixties and thinking that they would be a good investment, until I went to my local coin shop and found out they were worth about what she paid for them 30 years ago. I think I broke my arm,

patting myself on my back. I did it, I did it!! My 2 year goal of having an all NGC set of Eisenhower Dollars at the top of the Registry has been reached. They aren't the most colorful, don't have that stunning eye appeal of some of the other sets, but they are what I could afford to pursue. Thanks for the encouragement I received from some members on here, it helped in making the decision to purchase some of the coins. I tried to get one of the highest graded examples for each coin when they

The 8 Reales Pinnacle

My Colonial Mexico City 8 Reales Type set captures the top spot -- sort of... Last year, I worked at completing the Colonial Mexico City 8 Reales Type Set with the hope that I might get the top spot. This set is eight coins (how appropriate) from the milled 8 Reales series minted in Mexico City during Spanish rule. The years represented by this set, 1732-1821, comprise a significant section of history in the Americas. After all, these coins were the primary specie circulating throughout the

3 of my 4 $10 Gold Libertys Arrived Today & Were Entered With 55 Minutes to Spare...

Talk about Going Down to The Wire... Greetings Collectors, Just wanted to share with you all what arrived in the mail today. Three of the four coins I had been waiting on came early this A.M. And I have just entered them into my $10 Liberty set. Today I received two old green holders with an 1874-P in one and an 1890-P in the other. The third was a nice 1883-S in a new PCGS slab. Now all I am waiting on from Apmex is my 1849-P PCGS AU-53. Good luck to all of you with your sets who are

STILL OUT THERE

GOT ONE IN CHANGE TODAY AT THE BANK. Well today at the bank while getting some rolls of the Mount Rushmore Quarters D mint where I live. I got some change from a check I had cashed. In it was a WHEATIE, yes indeed it was a 1958 but really very nice. They are out there when you least expect it. No if anyone out there can get me some P mint Rushmore quarters I would appreciate it. Tough Being Semi-retired

moving more into currency Hi all, I know it has been a while since I have posted any journal articles, and it has been longer still since I have purchased any coins. I have been semi-retired since the middle of May. Things at work made me and Hy-Vee decide to semi-retire. Insurance has been the big bug-a-boo, and I am still not sure how everything will work out. I have enough in my IRA to almost get through next year. The problem is I am having trouble with my back, I think from an acciden

Mint Error Coins

I found these Lincoln Cent coins with errors... I found some pennies kept in their own folder by my father. Didn't think much about them till my brother noticed the mint errors. I have a clipped planchet, off-center (this results in a missing L one one), and one with no apparent date and only the TY showing. I have never seen these before so I was wondering how collectible are they? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Is it Normal for a collector to change Gears/Interests Multiple Times?

I know it has been that way for me for many many years...I have accused myself of being a whore the way I would jump from one love to another. This may not be normal, and if it is not, then I am a sad case indeed. But it has always been the makeup of my coin collecting attitude. Greetings Collectors, Thank you all so much for your kind words about my Ten Dollar Liberty Gold. Too Late For An Award Consideration, But....Maybe not...

Made a trade with some ungraded foreign gold for three more $10 Liberty's that are on the way. And I found a very nice 1849-P $10 on the Apmex web site to make a total of four coming my way. Greetings Collectors,   The addiction of ten dollar Liberty gold continues with me, but may be too little too late for a best presented set for 2013. I was able to trade almost melt gold for melt gold on three of the four. But I believe I got the better of the trade. I was not able to acquire any New Or
