Someone Please Explain the NGC Point System!

Why is a 2007 S George Washington Proof Dollar in PF 70 Ultra Cameo condition worth nearly as many points as a very rare 1937 MS 68 FB Mercury Dime? I still do not understand the NGC point system for U.S. coins. It is clearly not based on rarity. Case in point I have a very nice and very common 2007 S George Washington dollar in PF 70 Ultra Cameo condition. NGC has certified at least 9,982 coins at this level and gives them all 908 points. I also have very nice and very rare 1937 MS 68 FB M

Highest scoring in mint sets 1965-1998

Just saw this yesterday I was going to look at my mint sets and saw the page that lists all the years from 1965-1998, then I noticed the little box at the top and saw where it listed highest scoring. I clicked on it and to my surprise my 1776-1976 Clad Mint Set is the highest scoring mint set for those years. It listed the 50 highest scores and I actually have 3 of the top 10. When I finally get all my Eisenhower upgrades I might try and see if I can get the top 5 sets. Something to do and ano

Coin Poetry?

I was doing a bit of interest research for an upcoming journal and ran across something that I never would have thought to exist... A poem about coins. I'm sure that there are countless of other poems that involve coins in some way. But I've never read a poem that venerates the actual art of the coin. Maybe you've seen this before. It's pretty old; first published at the turn of the 20th century. But it's a new discovery for me.   A Cabinet of Greek Coins BEHOLD portrayed in miniature

TOO LONG BETWEEN ENTRIES BUT I'M STILL HERE

BE CAREFUL: That light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train! Hello my friends, I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and you are looking forward to an awesome Christmas. It seems like forever since I put a journal entry but life has a funny way of getting in the way. I am doing well, however, despite the last 18 months or so. It has been a particularly rough ride and we lost my father, father-in-law, and just recently my mother-in-law. However, this journal is not about the twists

First Spouse Registry sets

Did anyone noticed the registry mistake? When I was adding my Helen Taft proof coin to my registry, I notice that the last two coins for this year(Ellen Wilson and Edith Wilson) has been combined into one coin slot. So I checked all the other sets, I found out that all the gold sets have the mistake, the medal set is correct. I sent a support request to them, hope they fix it soon. Happy Collecting! Checking in.

Coming up on the end of the year. Hello everyone. I don't get to check in as often as I would like, but I have kept up my collecting. I just added the MS Olympics Baseball coin to my set today and I ordered the 5 Star General PF coin last night. Once I get that one in, I will have 9 coins to go, to finish my Commemorative Half Collection. My Eleanor (For those of you familiar with the movie Gone In 60 Seconds" is the 1982 George Washington MS in 69. So far, I have only been able to find i

1923 Peace Dollar and the President Kennedy connection

Coin toss for the 1963 game. Hi everyone. Today the military academies of the Army and Navy are playing their annual game. The coin that was used today for the coin toss was a 1923 Peace Dollar that was to be used by President Kennedy for the 1963 game. The game was postponed and played a few weeks later as the country was still reeling from the assassination. A few weeks later Midshipman Tom Lynch received a letter from Cyrus Vance who was Secretary of the Army at the time along with the

OUT WITH THE NEW

Huge coin exchange happening today. Well, today I am completing another big trade. Out go about 40 of my modern coins. My collection is being reduced by quite a bit selling off the newer ones, adding some oldies, and getting an amount of cash for the coin show coming up in January in Orlando. Just in case some folks there have some goodies I can't live without, I am going to be prepared to adopt them. I may attempt to expand my Indians or find a new shining star to follow. I also am lookin

REAL VALUE OF SILVER CANADIAN DOLLAR

Now everyone knows The other day, a friend of mine needed to sell some Canadian Siver Dollars. It was easy to identify the general run of the coins, but there was a little wrench in the machinery. Dots. Yup, large, small, and medium dots. By the time I got it all figured out, I am seeing dots. Here is the answer. On the 1966 there are a couple of different versions; The bead around the edge of the coins come in three sizes, small, medium, and yup you guessed it, large. Seems the diffe

I'm Baaaaack!

Missed the camaraderie. As many of you know I collect only PCGS coins for a variety of reasons that are immaterial to this post. I want to assure you that I don't compete for any awards on the NGC Registry as I don't think that would be legit. One of the reasons I enjoy being a member of the registry is to see how my collection 'stacks up' against some of the greatest collections on the planet. I am thankful that NGC opens up it's registry to PCGS collectors for the sole reason that members

1866 2c proof

I have finally found it This coin has given me fits , I am collecting a 1866 seated liberty set and have been working on it for about three years .Its true my standards ,I think are high but I have to admit this set has given me more pleasure than all my other coins. My wife is always after me asking, quote ,why are you agonizing over this so much you put hundreds of hours in this ,just go and bye one. It's true I could do that but some where along the way I developed a sense of pride about

THE FIRST AMERICAN COIN

Is it true, legend, or fancy? Only her hairdresser knows for sure. Have you heard this popular legend? Copper bands surrounding wooden kegs of gunpowder from the American Revolution were used as coin strips to punch the blanks used in the creation of the first American coin, the Flowing Hair, Chain Reverse Large Cent. A second reverse design featuring a wreath was produced in 1793. The first Large Cent, Flowing Hair, Wreath Reverse, was minted by the Philadelphia Mint in 1793. It was the fi

Minimalist Collecting: Passion

What drives you? Why do you collect? Is it Passion about coins? I love to view great things: the architecture of the Atlantis Resort or, fancy casinos; a $17,000 PF 68 Barber Half with monster toning or a high resolution photo of an 1804 Draped Bust Dollar; or well-dressed, high-society people. Seeing them brings pleasure, but I don't have to own them to enjoy them. There's nothing wrong with owning them. There wouldn't be an Atlantis Resort if some entity didn't own and maintain it.

PROBLEM with custom sets?!?!

Where did they go? I am trying to view my custom sets (including my horse set) and they are not showing up tonight. Even from collection manager, when I click on the set, it shows that there are no coins in it!!! Can this really be? I hope this is just a fluke...I have spent hundreds of hours on putting that set together and organizing it. In a bit of a panic... To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Kennedy, Franklin, Washington and Roosevelt Howdy Friends, Well, I have been busy tracking down examples for my Kennedy, Franklin, Washington and Roosevelt registries and have secured some nice upgrades and a few new additions for my sets. It does not happen often but lately it seems that every bid I post ends up winning and as a result I have 13 new coins to spread over 4 sets. I have listed each below with mintages and NGC population numbers just for fun. My proof Roosevelt registry rece

A Couple of Sticky Irksome Things

Stickers have no place near coins..... There are many things in this hobby that can get under our skin. I believe the reason that the small things irk us is because we truly love the hobby of numismatics. Some of the things that we are troubled by are more personal pet peeves and others are because of bigger trends in the hobby. I will admit--and I know it is a controversial subject but it is just my own personal feeling ( and for now Americans still retain at least the right to hold persona

Late season unplanned Buffalo pick-up

One last 2013 coin addition, next year's plan TBD This late season December Buffalo purchase of a nicely struck 1935 probably ends my 2013 coin acquisitions. I started this Buffalo set in March and it has come along way, but I have noticed that I haven't focused all my energy on it as with other previous sets such as my Indian Cents and Two Cent pieces. As I make up my mind on this set, I may focus next year on just the later dates, from 1934-38 with the possibibility of reverting to just the

WHAT IS THE CHANCE OF THE AVERAGE JOE WINNING AN AWARD?

Actually Pretty Darn Good. And I am living proof of this. Greetings Collectors, Now that the award deadline has come and gone, there are many of you wishing and hopeing for an award. Now as most of you know there are many types of awards. You have three for many of the categorys, and of course if you have the number one set in a series, there is but a single winner there. But to win this last award with a number one ranked set, one has to have very very deep pockets such as a doctor, a law

Roosevelt Silver Dimes

So What Makes a Great Roosevelt Silver Dime? Here is a nice example of an NGC graded 1960 D MS 67 FT Star Roosevelt silver dime. Yes this is a common coin as more that 200 million were minted in Denver. To be fair NGC has only graded 847 of these dimes and I am sure more exist that could be graded in the future. That said Full Torch versions of these dimes are clearly harder to find and a MS 67 FT with good eye appeal is yet more difficult to find. I am sure many have been cherry picked at thi
