Are they the new "dinosaur?" Hello everyone, I am looking for the 2012 Presidents in a multi. NGC PF70 ER. If you have one, or know someone, please contact me? I can find every other year, but 2012 seems to be elusive. I would like to complete my set, and need this one multi....for now   Thanks To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. The never ending expansion!

So much to collect! I have been collecting now for roughly 13 years but I have only been collecting seriously for about 6 or so years. I have a large amount on quality coins that need to be certified to help preserve them, and make it possible to better share my collection with others but it seems that every time I set aside the coins that are next for submission I get sidetracked by another coin and there goes my submission budget! I was wondering if this is a common occurrence with some of t

Started Collecting in 2009 and have not turned back since.

Top of the list fininaly. I started collecting back in 2009. I am still new at this but through the years I have found the hobby to be an expensive and challenging one. Well I just go my four 2013 President 1$ PF 70 Ultra Cameo coins back. I have 3 more years before the set is completed unless we lose a president. When I first started collecting I never would have known that within two years I would some day be number one in a coin set. That day came in 2011 when I landed on the top of the lis

Custom set reaches 200 coins...

Horses galore... Saturday of this last weekend was my first time to the MOON Show in the Minneapolis, MN area. I went with no particular idea of what to expect, but after my normal "one-time-through browse", I stopped back at the few tables that caught my eye. In the end, I only purchased one coin for the day, but it was one that was on my want-list for quite some time. I found a nice example of a Half Crown that features the small rendition of St. George Slaying the Dragon on the reverse s

Nearing Decision Time

can my compulsion for completion be quelled or do I just finish the set? When I started my Barber Half set it was with simple parameters and an understanding. First: I would build a "short set" of Barbers. No registry or even any album that I'm aware of has a barber half short set but it seems to me to provide the perfect series for a partial collection of a much larger series. The division I made was for the 1900 thru 1915 dates. This allows for a clear division by century and also allows f

No Submission Record Found

A Good Sign!! Well Friends, I decided to check my 1952 Proof set submission today. As NCS has it first and then will turn it over to NGC for encapsulation. There are no records showing that I had any submissions so that tells me that things are rolling along especially since I have had over 100 coins graded this year. I should get some imformation on this quest next week. Here's hoping for a STAR!!! Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be add

A "replacement"?

Not exactly, but there are just as few of these as there are of the 1968 D I sent back. I have had my eye on this coin for a while also and because I got my money back on the 1968 D I pulled the trigger on this one. It is a pop 16 coin and the net points I received for it are almost identical (1239 for this one and 1258 for the 1968 D). Feast your eyes on this one. Lincoln's face almost looks like it should be on one of the early 80's coins with all the bubbling in the surface but it is on

Light gray spots

where is the quality control Hello Fellow collectors, I have been receiving slabs back from NGC with light gray spots in the white field around the coin it's normally in the lower right side of the slab. is anyone else receiving slabs with this defect? I will contact NGC this afternoon and will post a photo tomorrow. I sure hope NGC will correct this problem and keep the same cert number on the coin. one can only hope. Happy Collecting and may God Bless....Mike To see old comments for

Controversial Deaccession

Provides the acquisition opportunity of a lifetime I guess I don't pay much attention to general numismatic news because the events surrounding the deaccession (elimination of items by a museum) of the Huntington Collection of coins and medals from the Hispanic world passed by without my notice. I only started to check out what this Huntington Collection was after I won an interesting 8 reales from an auction house that specializes in ancient coins. Archer M. Huntington (1870-1955), philant

Garys October Coin of the Month

Garys Coin of the Month (Volume 3, Number 2) features a coin commemorating the 25th wedding anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and Elizabeth of Bavaria. The obverse of this coin portrays an image of their conjoined busts and the reverse features a seated image of the goddess Fortuna. This coin (KM#X5) grading MS-63 by NGC resides in my newest custom set entitled, The Use of Seated Imagery in Numismatics. In 1879, the Austro-Hungarian Empire issued a 2 gulden commemorative coin to

Beware of criminal coin dealers

I have been cheated by a daeler Recently I have been involved with a transaction with a dealer and they are trying to cheat me. I am on vacation and cannot defend myself but will attempt to get my money back upon my return. I will write all facts in coming journals. I can only warn all that there are too many crooked dealers and I intend to do something about it. stay tuned. Captain Brian To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Which Buffalo to Purchase?

In the end I picked a NGC 1936 Proof 67 Brilliant Coin to add to my Collection This year I was debating purchasing either a Gold 2013 Reverse Proof Buffalo or a real Buffalo proof nickel from back in the day. I know less then 50,000 Gold 2013 Reverse Proof Buffalo coins were made, but in the end I prefer to have an original buffalo proof nickel. This is not to say such Gold Buffalo coins will not appreciate, but I am just a U.S. history buff at heart. In the end I found a very nice NGC 1936

6 to go!!!

But pretty much tapped out cash-wise for now I am down to needing just 6 coins to complete my 32-64 Washington set. (The PCGS 1937 MS66 is pending verification and the 1948 D MS66 has not arrived yet) It will still take me about 3-4 more months to complete as I have used up my budget for the near future plus the holiday season is coming soon. The 1934P and 1962D are somewhat allusive in MS66 and a little pricey. Of course I am sure I could get one now by overpaying one of the buy-it-now rip-of

Broke the Top 100 in U.S. Coins

Total Coin Registry Points: 528,273 Rank: 96 It took about four years of collecting but I finally broke the TOP 100 in U.S. Coins in the NGC Collectors Society. I realize not every one agrees this is an important goal and I understand that. In many cases a few high quality coins are better to own than a very large quantity of common coins. Still I have tried to upgrade my collection with higher end U.S. coins over the past two years and breaking the TOP 100 shows at least I am going in the ri

ARRRRGH! Imaging Coins can be Really Frustrating

Have you ever held a coin in your hand and just admired the intricate details and the spectacular kaleidoscope of colors? Then you try to image your coin just to find that the image looks nothing like the coin. Well I just bought this beautiful Conder Token for my seated images set and for the life of me I could not get the color in the picture to look like the token in my hand. I tried different lighting and angles to no avail. I tried different edits in my raw format editor, nothing doing. M

How Do You Get an NGC Coin Upgraded or a Star (*) added?

I have tried Three Methods and Only One Works. I have tried three different methods to get an existing NGC coin upgraded or have a Star (*) added. My first attempt was to send in five (5) coins for a regrade. This did not work at all. All the coins can back graded the same in new holders. My second attempt was a crack-out with a 1922 Gold Grant Dollar coin. I posted a journal about the success I had with NGC upgrading the coin from MS 65 to MS 66. My most recent attempt was to send in a group

They finally arrived

I am now a happy camper, again The photo proofs arrived today and I am really impressed with the job NGC has done on them. I would urge everyone to get a few done just to highlight those special coins you have in your collection. I have attached two of the Franklins (out of five) I submitted. I put them in a collage format to save space so I hope they display halfway decent here. Again thank you to everyone on you postings and also private e-mails I received. A bit disappointed!

I bought this coin over a four month period and very anxiously waited for its arrival. This coin not only would have been a great addition to my Lincoln sets but fit very nicely into my younger brother's 1968 mint set, moving me closer in my #2 spot to #1. I opened the package and as I do for every coin I buy got out my 30x glass and began inspecting it. Now before that I could notice something a little strange with my naked eye but I couldn't exactly tell what it was. When I inspected it

AND THEY'RE OFF!!!!

Sent em in, how will I stack up? Well I did it, Sent in my Reverse proof Buffalo, 2013 W ASE set, and a 2012 S ASE set for grading. I bought some grading books and studied via NGC, and other sites. Looked at each coin daily many times, and concentrated on a different part of the coin each time. I also used more than one different magnification each time so as to get a different aspect of each coin. Also under different lighting. So, in my extreme ignorance on judging grades, here are my

Mystery solved

almost Came home today and found a notice in the mailbox that USPS tried to delivery a registered package form NGC Hot damn ! So they will try again tomorrow. I will post pics of a few of the photo proofs in the next few days. Again thanks everyone for the positive vibes and well wishes. NGC and error grading....

And I thought I had it... Here I am...pretty confident about my submission...I know I have a dead ringer with the 1951 D/S FS-511 which, BTW, graded out as MS-62 RB, and pretty sure of all the other ones. NGC had other opinions. They were quick to tell me that my 1914 Dime had UNC details, and was improperly cleaned, but didn't recognize the die break on the reverse (probably 1/16-1/8 inch long). My 1946 D/D/D wasn't that, but it had it's own special little baggie with a sticker on IT, that

Update on mis-routed package

or which way did they go ...... Called NGC this morning and verified that they in fact had my correct mailing address on the package. Then called the local post office and they checked the status with their system. It showed it as out for delivery in Chicago on the 28th but no update since, but she said that these status updates are computer generated and to not put too much stock in them. (easy for her to say) So the onus is on the USPS at this time. I will sit here and wait for the time b
