1878-S $20 NGC MS61* with Prooflike Fields

The only 1878-S double eagle with the Star Designation for its prooflike reflective fields. With each new acquisition for the Grandview Collection of Liberty Double Eagles in 2013, I plan to describe the coin and relevant background information with a journal post. I have been wanting to upgrade the 1878-S $20 in my collection for many years, but until recently could not find the right coin. There are only two 1878-S twenties with the PL designation both in MS61 (NGC Census 9/2013), so it

Say it aint so NGC, please say it aint so

Can this really be happening ?? Greetings all, As you may of read from my last journal I stated I sent in 5 Franklin Proofs from my award winning set to have them Photo-Proof and then sent back to me. I just checked the status of the shipment and it says, Out for delivery today in Chicago. One thing, I DO NOT LIVE in Chicago.... In this set was a few very rare Franklins that you just cant replace like that. Also the FMV that NGC places on these Franklins is so far off it is ridiculous.

My exercise in minutia ...

... may be complete. I recently sent eight coins to NGC for grading and while waiting for their return, I decided to do some research. The coins are all from the same set, and I've only handled a few of them, so virtually all of my information has come from books, magazine articles, and the internet (mainly pictures, and eBay listings). I was getting close to completion and with books and papers piled all around me I was sitting at the computer writing the set and coin descriptions when my w

Two sets complete

Indians Indians call the calvary Two completed sets now reside in my collection. My quest to add only PF or MS70 coins or rare ones has been enhanced this weekend at the shows. I sold a lot of my duplicates, and lesser grade modern coins and completed the two indian sets I have been "hiding under my bed" sort of. So now I have two complete sets, and nowhere to go with these so I need to find another avenue to walk. All MS 61, from 1908 thru 1915, and from 1925 thru 1929 nothing missing. (

1851 Seated Quarter

NGC AU55 As you have read in the heading, my most recent addition is the below-pictured 1851 Seated quarter. I've been thinking about a Seated quarter set for quite some time now, and I finally took the plunge. About a month ago, I bought a raw 1854 Arrows at a small shop in central PA. After posting the coin in the "Hey buddy can you spare a grade?" section on the boards, it seems that everyone who replied agreed on AU55. That coin goes to NCS tomorrow to remove some small PVC spots then to N

1837 Capped Bust Quarter

Newest addition This is the newest addition to my 31-38 date set. I love the Capped Bust design, but I chose the quarter to collect as there does not seem to be that many people that collect these as a set. Only three more to go to complete this set! Thanks for looking. PCGS XF45 To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

My latest NGC submission

Not bad but once again...nothing new for my registry. I thought I would get at least three MS68's and I did but not ones I really wanted. I didn't have much cash to submit a whole lot but did spread it around on some nickels, quarters and dollars. I was able to replace the 2011 P Hayes Early Releases with a regular label. I really don't care much for those "Releases". I see more of the dealers got the message this year and hardly any offered those...Thank goodness. My secondary goal is to

COIN SHOW RESULTS

THE SHOW WAS VERY BUSY, MY REGISTRY WILL SHOW I went to two coin shows this past weekend, one in New Port Richey, Fl., and one [the nation's largest coin club] in W. Palm Beach. I hope you all had a nice wxend. I went to two coin shows, (had two tables at each) one in New Port Richey, Fl., and one in W.Palm Beach. May I add that the one in Palm Beach is the nations largest coin club. I have been in Florida since 1968 and long ago have learned that September is the quietest month and this was

Sometimes Less is Better

Lesser grade and lesser cost, however all of the enjoyment. I don't know if others do this but I would guess that many of my fellow collectors do. As a classic coin collector I sometimes run through the slots of a budding set and try and figure out the maximum grade or cost I'll be able to afford for the slots. As an example--in my Walker short set I surmised early on that an MS66 1941-S would be the max grade I could obtain. A PQ 41-S goes for $1500 to $1700 however an MS67 may sell for $2

Something Different for my Registry Set

My 1st NGC Multi Coin holder Proof Set In continuing the search for the JFK Accented Hair varieties on e-bay (see my journal from earlier this week) , I came across a NGC multi coin 1964 Proof set that caught my eye. As my currently construed collection is 100% classic coin focused (except for a few modern uncirculated gold commemoratives that I half heartily dabble in), this represented an entirely new registry collecting area. Before bidding I calculated that the starting bid represented

Custom Set Rewards

Im new to NGC so i was wondering.... Im new to NGC so i was wondering something. It says only NGC coins (and 2 others) wil be visible, so my question is: Will the NGC coins (and 2 others) only count toward the reward thing or will all the coins count? The good, the bad and the.......huh???

It's been an eventful week Two good things, actually. Good thing #1. After months of searching ebay, Heritage and other auction sites, several coin store visits and two local shows, at last I found the last PCGS FBL Franklin I needed to complete my set. This was only the third 1963 MS-64FBL I had seen in over six months, and the previous two went for way more than I wanted to pay. I entered a bid on it. Within hours after this one came up for auction, another one also appeared. Several

1804 Restrike Large Cent

Top Pop It's been a super busy summer for me. Being in the motorcycle industry in summer means constant travel and little time home for our hobbies. I had decided to certify my large cents to keep a little excitement going in the numismatic life. I had assembled a raw large cent collection a while back, technically the last century (). The 1804 is always a tuff one and I hadn't found one yet. I chanced upon a restrike on Ebay back in 2004. It was a buy it now at $800 for an 'uncirc

1952 Roosevelt Tough One

Toned Proof 68* Cameo Photo Shoot I have been working on upgrading my photos for my Roosevelt dimes. I added shots of the doubled die varieties to my Roosevelt Proofs 1950-64 Including Varieties and that was a challenge. However, my latest coin I have been working on exceeded the challenge of the varieties. The photos below are a 1952 NGC Proof 68* Cameo. The coin has dark blue toning on the obverse for the top one-third and literally toning overall the rest of the obverse and the reverse.

Combining vacation, reading , coins and more

almost 50 years ago , JFK and the 1964 PF Accented Hair Variety Hi everyone, I recently returned from a great vacation last week in Hilton Head, SC. The low country is quite beautiful and except for the fact that I got skunked flyfishing for tailing redfish I had a great time (actually I always have a great time fishing whether I catch or don't catch fish). One thing I was able to do on vacation was catch up on my reading, and I devoured both of O'Reilly's "Killing Kennedy" and "Killing L

Major Kennedy Set Upgrade

Big Green Label Haul! Over the weekend I picked up a lot of 29 Kennedy halves from the Old World Coin Shop in McHenry, Illinois. All were in PCGS slabs, and 27 of the 29 were green labels. The only two blue labels were top pops: a 1968S PR69DCAM and a 1970S PF69DCAM. Highlights among the green labels were a 1966 SMS MS68 and a 1969S PR69DCAM (another top pop). The rest were a mix of earlier MS65 and MS66, many of which I have never seen come up for auction on eBay. All but 5 of the halves
