Hunted and Hunted and Hunted--Then I Passed

Guess that is why it is called collecting and not assembling or gathering. I must start off by admitting that I'm hesitant with talking about specific dates that I'm searching for. In my paranoid and competetive little mind--if someone out there who is searching for the same coins that I am in the same grades, by them knowing that I also will be trying to acquire them-this gives them an advantage in sniping me or driving up the price at auction. Or worse yet, if a dealer knows that buyers have

Baltimore Show Recap

New coins, new Club, new friends Last week I attended the Baltimore Whitman Show on Thursday and Friday. As usual, I departed my home in Northern New Jersey mid morning and arrived in Baltimore around 3PM. This works well, as I avoid the morning commuter traffic and still gets me to the show for a few hours on day 1. So after checking in to the Holiday Inn, I promptly walked over to the show and checked out the bourse for about 2 hours. The show had only opened to the public at 12PM and the

I'm talking about eye appeal!

This jewel of a coin came home to roost earlier this month. Like most of my pricey coins of late, I paid this one off on terms and it arrived a couple of weeks ago. This particular coin is so rare that NGC had to make a spot for it and determine the scores for it in the four different sets I have it registered in. That took a solid week before I could even enter it. First and foremost, this coin now sits proudly in my 1947 tribute mint set to my mother. It also resides in my quarter set,

Devastation in The Philippines.

The full magnitude of the devastation left by Typhoon Haiyan as it crossed The Philippines is just now being realized. The survivors there desperately need all the help we can provide. I have no direct connection to the Philippines, other than my love of their history as it became entwined with our own, and the coinage that resulted. Through my numismatic endeavors of the last 10 years, I have purchased many coins from dealers in The Philippines, and I've never been disappointed with their s

and my latest dedication Hello Friends, The latest addition to My Heritage Set is a modern commemorative the 2006 Benjamin Franklin "The Scientist". In particular for the dedication, the reverse of the coin contains a representation of the famous political cartoon published by Benjamin Franklin featuring a dismembered snake with the motto "Join or Die". In 1775 he addressed the following letter to the Pennsylvania Gazette, signed "An American Guesser". "The Rattlesnake as the Symbol of Am

Pair of small Peruvian Gems!

Extremely rare quality on typically somewhat crudely made coins. I recently bought two wonderful little Gems. 1850 and an 1855 1/2 Real Lima, both in NGC MS66! Anyone who knows these small pretty coins knows that to find one of these in this state of preservation is almost a miracle. Well this miracle hit twice. Dos Milagros Baby!!! I have added a slab pic, but to see them in closer detail go look at my Latin American Beauties Custom set. To see old comments for this Journal entry, c

My adventures with the 100 Greatest US Modern Coins; part 4

Sometimes you get lucky and a gamble pays off... One of my flea market fantasies is finding a Cheerios Dollar in a bin of cheap coins. They estimate that about 5000 of the coveted 2000 P prototype reverse may have been minted and placed in Cheerios boxes. This interesting varient was not discovered until years later, so most were probably spent and eventually found their way to wherever it is that all of the billions of modern dollar coins end up, since nobody ever actually uses them as mone

A little help with the steps Friends, I ordered a micro to check the perfection of my steps on my nickels before I send them in for grading. Of course I selected a 2012-P for my first test results. Early Silver Kennedy's get an adjustment

in value and registry points. Howdy Friends, Well, the early silver and SMS Kennedy's finally got an adjustment to their value and points. The conditionally rarest of my early Kennedy's is a 1965 SMS MS67 Cameo example that is now valued at $750 and sports 1450 registry points. I've always felt that coin was the best of my early Kennedy collection and I'm pleased to see it raised to its proper place relative to other coins in the my set. High grade SMS Cameo's in any denomination are very

140 #1 Registry Sets

Where does it end? A little over a year ago I wrote a Journal entry that I hit the number 100 for #1 Registry Sets. Today I'm up to 140. Granted, the majority of them are sets with less than 10 slots in them and with the exception of 1 they are all World Coin sets. I can't believe the increase in output from some of the World Mints on the variety of coins being issued each year. The coins themselves have their own varieties. Colorized, Gilt, Proof, Mint State, Proof Colorized, etc. It has come

1952 Proof Set

My Franklin Failed considerably!!! Friends, As I sent in the 52 Proof set due to what I thought was a PF66 Franklin and a SUPERBIRD Washington I missed on both points. After the milky haze was removed from the Franklin by NCS the rough details showed and the Cameo obverse was gone. However I still got a PF63 which I believe is the lower of populations but still a value of $175 and a temporary hole filler. Other grades: 1c = PF66rd 5c = PF67 10c = PF66 25c = PF65 I will be start

IS IT JUST ME? OR Does the "Little Guy" get less here.

The Law of Averages, The Census and the "Little Guy" I have been submitting coins to NGC since 2008 and pretty much backed away in 2011, into 2012, as far as the quantity and frequency of coins I send their way. This mainly due to the fact I never seem to be in the running for top grade coins, regardless of what I submit. I just got back an ER 4 coin Lunar typeset and of course, there's a token "70." for my troubles, but what always seems to surface is that all my "69's" are orphans or close t

The "Not so Good" results are in!

Although we don't always get the grades we are looking for, that doesn't mean it should discourage us from our pursuits. Well, NGC posted the grades of my latest submission today and it is not at all what I had expected. The grades are as follows: 5) 1955-S Roosevelt Dimes 1- MS65 2- MS66 1- MS67 1- Improperly Cleaned (Not sure I agree with this as there were no visible signs of cleaning when I examined the coin, plus the coin came from an original roll.) 5) 1960 Roosevelt Dimes

Forty Years in the making... (my first journal)

So if you want to collect Newfoundland you must be able to accept what some call problem coins. Because there just are so few examples out there for any price. Over this past weekend I completed two of the Newfoundland sets. The Newfoundland 1913-1936 Cents and the Newfoundland 1865-96 Ten Cents are now complete and can be found in the Canada - Maritime Provinces section of the NGC World coin registry. I've been working on this for over forty years. I only know of a few complete Newfoundland s

Albemarle, NC "A Concord real estate company owner said Tuesday he wants to start a reward fund to help find the person who killed an 81-year-old Albemarle coin dealer during a robbery last week. Police say Eldridge Roger Gibson was shot during a robbery around 5 p.m. Thursday at B&G Coins, the West Main Street shop that he operated for decades. Gibson died of his wounds late Thursday night. new token maybe I am bidding on a rare Isle of Man token at the moment, not sure if I will get it as there is considerable interest in it. My collection is growing nicely, but the one item that I am finding it difficult to get my hands on is the 1798 penny. For some reason there are not many about in a grade that I am happy with, or in high grade is a lot of money. Enough for now. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. NGC MS66 1999 Wide AM Lincoln Memorial

NGC Population of 30 with 6 graded higher Hi everyone. Here is a picture of my NGG MS66 1999 Wide AM Lincoln Memorial with a current NGC population of 30 in this grade with 6 graded in MS67. The Wide AM Lincoln came about when mint personnel mistakenly used the reverse dies that were meant to be used on the proof Lincolns for that year. These coins continue to grow in popularity and in increased value. Thanks again to Robecs Images for the great photo. I hope you enjoy my coin and as alwa

When does bidding really close at a live auction?

Floor bidders have the advantage at Sedwick's Treasure Auction 14 I had an unfortunate experience on Wednesday night during Daniel Frank Sedwick's live auction of world coins. My maximum absentee bid was the starting price for a scarce 8 reales overdate, and I watched it go live through my internet connection from home (I had turned off the live audio/video feed). Although I was prepared to counter-bid, no additional bids came in and the item closed at my high bid. Great! Another slot fille

Investor v Collector at Auction

Which coin would you pick? I paid a bit of a premium price for this coin that, unfortunately, happened to be in a PCGS holder with a CAC sticker. These slabs attract the wrong kind of bidder... the investor. (I am of course joking, kind of). After writing about, "Problem Coins", the thread went to the question of what a person is buying: the coin or the slab? I think when it comes to these better type coins or rare date coins, IN GENERAL, you get more coin for your money for a coin in a NGC
