GSA grading result in, coin arrives safely thru Northeast storm
Hi fellow collectors,
As an update to the Nov 12 journal I posted on the Balt Show, I wrote that I purchased a crescent obversed toned 1881 CC GSA and was hoping 63* to validate the puchase price
Well, last week I saw that I indeed received the 63* grade and today the coin safely arrived, finally ! I rarely submit raw coins, in fact this was my only grading submission to NGC in 2013 so very happy with the result.
The 1881CC
Not the usual graded but back to our beginnings.
Friends,
I started a new collection this year that has really grown far more than I expected. I started trading coins in January for mint sets and proof sets and obtained very many proof sets in mint packaging. Today I made a purchase from Bill who is selling out and going on road adventures in his motor home. In the small pile he had there was a 2013 proof set and a 2011 Silver proof set to add that I needed. I have acquired very many doubl
Out with the new, in with the old.
I am a relatively new collector and being introduced to the world of coins was quite a daunting experience in the beginning. I did not have much focus nor intent, just found itsomething to do with some extra money while I was working for a living.
As time went by, and I got more involved, I was intrigued with the wide scope and variety of coins and paper money. [i am just now beginning to see paper money as a new side of my collecting.]
A short while
I upgraded two of mine
I was going to wait until the last minute of the Registry deadline to add them, but that seemed childish and sneaky. In all reality mine may have the #1 beside it but it does not come close to Troy Weavers. I have looked at his pictures and wished I had some coins like his. He is building his set for his children and it is something to be proud of. Mine started out as a simple set that was easy to assemble, then I got the idea of donating it to the Eisenhower Museum. I w

Orlando, Florida January 8-12. Hope to see you there
Hi everyone. I have decided to display my Lincoln Memorial circulation issue registry set at this years January FUN Show in Orlando, FL starting January 8th and ended on the 12th. For those who do not know FUN stands for "Florida United Numismatist and it is one of the biggest coin shows of the year. I will be displaying my registry set in a non competitive display since this is the first time I have ever displayed it and if all goes wel
I want the best American coins that I can buy. No proofs, but I did just get an 1885 MS67+ NGC S$1. Being retired, it is buy and sell to find some more money. With some of the collections I look at, I hope you all are not wealthy. Anyway, come along and help me write my journal. David
My grandfather was born in 1879 Maine. At 31 years old, he married and they moved to Washington, D. C. He saved some MS pennies and nickels for my cousin, Denis, and me. I have been collecting for my 65 y
It's been awhile.
Good evening, everyone. It's been awhile since I've had the time to be on here, so I thought I would check in and say hello.
I am slowly getting settled into Maryland. The weather is getting colder, so I've had to buy a real coat for the first time in a long while. It took me a little longer that I would have thought to get a new job up here, but I am settling in nicely there as well. I have been buying coins to slowly plug holes in a few ongoing sets. I received two C
...in a business envelope!!
Hi everybody,
Just wanted to rant a bit on how I received a coin I purchased the other day. It was shipped in a business size envelope with a tape used to make the envelope a bit more secure. Really... are people this dumb?
The slabbed coin just slid right out of the envelope when the mail carrier handed it to me after I signed for it. Thank you PO for having honest employees. I could of been handed an empty envelope instead. At least the slab was bubble wrappe
An arrest has been made
Update on my previous post:
"Albemarle police say they have made an arrest in the Halloween robbery and slaying of an 81-year-old coin shop owner.
Police say Ryan Anthony Efird was taken into custody earlier Wednesday without incident. Efird, 45, of Albemarle, is being held without bond in the Stanly County Detention Center.
He has been charged in connection with the death of Eldridge Roger Gibson.

I know my December piece is a little early, but Ive been working feverishly on my owner comments for The Use of Seated Imagery in Numismatics custom set. I just finished the owner comments for this token last night and its history is so interesting to me that I had to post it. Ill post the other supporting pictures on the chat boards.

There are coins in this set that are difficult to describe, and this 1863 store card is one of them. That said, I w
It was easier when I was younger and everything was cheaper.
I decided to diversify my portfolio and have some fun at the same time. But collecting has changed quite a bit since Ebay came online. I started to do research about a month ago and decided to focus on Morgan Dollars and Silver Bullion as my primary effort (there is just something about a mined piece of silver).
I have carried a 1921 Morgan Dollar with me throughout my 35 year career in the military. It accompanied me to Kuwai
NGC Multi-coin Proof set collection grows
In September I posted an article describing a NCG 1964 multi-coin holder Proof set I added to my collection. I really liked the look of the holder and this way of collecting proof sets.
Subsequently I bid on ebay and also purchased the NGC multi-coin holder box in anticipation of future proof set additions.
The years that I am targeting are 1954-1964, with 1964 being the final year of regular issue silver coinage and the 1st year of issue for the K
When does is a coin go from having where to having a "scratch"?
This poor excuse for a coin has been given the scarlet letter of numismatics, the details grade with the NGC purple insert. Exactly when the coin goes from having where to being "scratched" it is not clear to me. I brought this coin because its dreaded defect is essentially unnoticeable in hand. What do you think?

Friend of mine has 200 of them, are they worth silver value or billions and billions?
A friend of mine asked me to grade and evaluate some coins for him. I went over and found he had some simple Canadian Silver Dollars, and on first look saw them as circulated, and in rather poor condition. Not even in the AU state, beyond that, when I went to the NGC Global price guide, I found some very low graded coins could be worth hundreds if not thousands. Does anyone know about these coins and their
Thank you NGC at times you make me the happiest coin collector on earth....
I had let my email sit for a few days last week. (All I get is spam from coin dealers) Then I found an email from NGC news of the week I think they call it. And within this Email I found something I've dreamed about for 2 years now... A special on 21st century US coins $10.00 each with a min of 10 per submission. Holy Cow what a deal for this under funded collector. I have already sent in my 2008 mint set a total of 18
The New Orleans Ten Dollar Libertys
Which is the only Branch Mint Gold I can afford...Greetings Collectors,It has been a while since my last post but I have been keeping myself quite busy trying to single out beautiful examples of my my latest favorite coin series. The $10 Liberty Gold from New Orleans. With the four examples pictured below, I now have all the O-Mint tens for the 20th century and all but two of the New Orleans tens from the 1890s. I have found through a great dealer friend of mi
I added this one from the set of Hunter's Gold about two weeks ago after he decided to sell it.
This top pop is in a PCGS holder only because NGC has graded just 1 coin at this level - definitely hard to come by in NGC. However, PCGS has graded 46 of them hence holding the points down but still elevated above the MS68.
You will notice on the attached picture an area of light colored toning covering most of Lincoln's chest on the obverse. Also visible on the obverse and reverse are some lig
One of the difficult set to complete
Sarawak coin is one of the most difficult set to be completed 100% in MS condition. From the first Rajah , second Rajah and third Rajah coinage set , every set got it own difficult year type to be obtain. For example, the most easy coin to get in third Rajah coinage set is 1927H, 1929H, 1930H and 1937H cents. However to get the 1927H coin ini MS grade is very difficult , only 7 pieces was graded by NGC in MS grade and none of it was graded above grade MS64
Heritage is important
I think there were three different Lincoln Pennies in 2009, correct me if wrong, but they came out with the shield reverse instead of the Lincoln Memorial. I feel after the party, they should revert back to the latter.
(Hope my facts are right, but the intent is solid.)

Spent 2 weeks in sunny Florida and came home red as a lobster.
Friends,
My Lincoln submission did well and returned back home today. I got 2 MS65rd's of which I expected the 1970 but the other was a surprise. On the MS66rd's I received 14, MS67rd's = 12 and 3 MS68rd's. I added a load to my set with only a few extras for spares. Submission 2617555-001 to 031
Here is the 2011 MS67rd--
Thanks and enjoy

although several coins of long term seeking were missed or passed upon, I still managed one nice pick up.
I must start by thanking and apologizing to Jason C. It seems he was perusing my sets and happened upon my MS67* Buffalo nickel. He and I were beginning to throw out some soft offers for a possible trade for the coin. I had not been overly attatched to the coin and really only bought it on impulse because I always wanted just a single attractive buffalo nickel as an example in my collectio
It might be a good one!
So, if you have read my last journal, this one is a nice part two.
Here I am bored a couple of days ago. Ive surfed everything. Ebay, telatrade, great collections, and Heritage. Nothing I want, or could find. Anyway, I go back onto ebay and look for raw coins. There it was a Canada 1953 nsf pl-65 penny. So the seller's dad had labled on the cardboard 2x2 holder. Is it for real? This is rare, raw or graded! The price was like 4-5 dollars. If it is for real, it could b
