Out with 2013 and in with 2014

Checking in on 2013's goals. So as we get ready to watch the ball drop on 2013, I wanted to go back and see how I did on my 2013 goals. 1. Crack the top 1500 sets. (Ranked 1356) Yaaaa! 2. Finish my Lincoln Cent collection. (With the exception of 1955 DDO) Yaaaaa!! 3. Finish my Ike collection. (65% complete) 4. Get to 33% completion on my Morgan collection. (16% complete. Halfway to that goal) 5. Keep Kennedy, Sacagawea and Presidential Dollar collections up to date. (Complete)

I need a bigger safe!

Value is relative. It has been a busy couple of months of trading. But I am getting closer to my ultimate goals of a complete Morgan MS set and a complete American Eagle (MS and PF) set. I have started a couple of minor sets as well (Peace, Anthony and Sacagawea dollars) but this is so I can use the American dollar in discussions with my children about the history of our country. Money and it's value has always been an interest of mine. But over the years, I got lost in the utility of mon

1875 $20 NGC MS60 Prooflike Double Eagle

One of three 1875 double eagles designated prooflike by NGC. I usually write a journal entry when I add a new coin to the Grandview Collection of Liberty Double Eagles. Today, however, I am writing about a coin that has been in my collection for many years, but was recently crossed over to a new holder. As a collector of prooflike gold, I prefer coins that are designated prooflike by NGC. On rare occasions in the past, I have purchased coins that I considered prooflike in PCGS holders.

Ancient Coins and Grade Vs. Condition

When I started to collect ancient coins I found I had to change my approach to selecting coins. First let me say season's greetings and happy New Year to one and all. Those of you that have looked at my custom set of ancient coins and read my "Set Description" have seen my stated personal opinion regard the grading of ancient coins. It is here that I put forth my argument that when selecting ancient coins for a collection one must look beyond the coin's stated grade. Before I go one ste

Dog Eats Dime

I would have liked the title of this journal to be some witty pun on the "dog-eat-dog" idiom. Unfortunately... the title is literal. Christmas... My brother and his wife are staying at my place for the holidays. With them they've brought gifts and deserts and all the accoutrements one brings with them while on vacation... Plus one 75-pound greyhound. See where this is going? I recently bought 20 or so new silver Roosevelts and have gone through them to pick out ones that I wanted to se

Currency of the Apocalypse!

and a MERRY CHRISTMAS to everybody. Hello fellow collectors, Last night we celebrated Christmas at our house. It was done a little early because myself and my youngest daughter have to work on the 25th and my oldest is going to San Francisco for a few days with her boyfriend. They are attending a Shark's hockey game and my daughter wants to visit with a bunch of her cousins. We did get to open all our gifts and one from my youngest combined my hobby of coin collecting with my love of horro

Finding the Value You Can Afford

"The best time to buy is when there is blood in the streets" - Warren Buffet It sure has been a while since I put back-to-back weekly entries in my journal. Like I said last week, I have been plodding along scouring the web for deals and steals on coins. Interestingly enough, I have been bottom fishing long enough now to notice there are distinct trends and cycles to where you can find the best deals. These cycles can vary as quickly as a week or take a couple of years to mature. But alas, I a

Question for debate

Toned coins A lot of the toned coins we know today are a result of the coin boards of yesteryear. I would imagine these old coin boards could still be found if you looked hard enough. My question is, would the grading companies consider them artificially toned nowadays? What are your thoughts? Merry Christmas to all and to all a new / old (Depending on your preference) coin! A Few Good Points

For a Few Good Collectors - my parody on the never ending saga NGC rep: You want accurate points? Collector Kaffee : I think I'm entitled to them. NGC rep: You want accurate points? Collector Kaffee: I want the truth! NGC rep: You can't handle accurate points! Son, we live in a collector's world that has graded holders. And those graded holders have to be scored by men with magnifying glasses. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Collector Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can

IN WITH THE OLD (part 2)

15 More Little Indians... I have just completed my third set of the $2.50 Indians of the 1908 - 1929 series. Now I have three complete sets, of the 15 coin set broken by the years the mints did not turn them out. The rarity and desire for these coins are pushing Indian 2.5 dollar gold coin values higher. At the high end of the scale is the 1911-D, the rarest date, this old US gold coins value is Over $15000, when you can find one. With one rare date, and one near rare in the series, t

IN WITH THE OLD (Part 1)

Adoption Central was open over the weekend, and all came in. I have now completed and added into my registry the 2nd Panama Pacific coin, the 1915 S MS67, and the third set of Quarter Eagle Indians. The PanPac is the highest grade but the population is somewhat high at 149, but seems to fit very nicely in the collection. Teddy Roosevelt got the Panama Canal dug, finished in August of 1914. I think the Panama Canal ranks with the greatest achievments of mankind. The formidable obstacles i

Silver Roosevelt Dimes with Pedigrees

There's no doubt that an important pedigree can increase the value of a coin. Coins with names attached like Eliasberg, Norweb, and Garrett usually command a high premium in the marketplace. While others, like The Omaha Bank Hoard, are so common, they will summon little to no premium at all. In this journal, I will make no argument for or against the importance of a coin's pedigree. Rather, I'd simply like to compile and share some of the specific things that I've learned about silver Roosevel

Strange Findings

Could it be a setup die tool? Friends, I was doing some pics of my Lincolns of which the proofs were too dark and the business strike were too bright. They will all need a redo but in the task I found something cool on the reverse of the 1974-D. It seems to be a plate or tool with the number 22 in the center of it. Left on the die and compressed into the reverse before making this Lincoln. Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
