My Daughter Is Getting Married.

Time to sell a few coins! Weddings are expensive propositions, and the father of the bride gets to foot the majority of the bill. It's time to clean up the sets a bit anyway, so this has given me a little added incentive. I created a custom set titled "On the Auction Block" (coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=15005) for the certified coins I'm willing to part with. Please PM me or send an email to coin928(at)live(dot)com if you see something you're interested in.

It's been a while.

Sometimes life just gets in the way of what's really important. Numismatics! I haven't written any journals lately, but I hope to be a little more prolific later this year. I received my wooden plaque from NGC a few weeks ago, and I realized that it's been almost two months since the Registry Awards were announced. I know I'm very late, but I'd like to thank NGC for the Best Presented Set Award and the five Photo Proofs that come with it. (I've already selected ten candidates that I now n

Thank-you Perth Mint....no Really, Thank-you!

Even A Blind Squirrel sometimes finds a nut..... I faithfully purchased the 2014 4 coin lunar typeset and sent it in for grading, with the unc colorized specimen coming back a "70." The other 3 were "69s. In years past, the colorized version(unc) rolled out on the heels of the typeset but this year, it did not and as a result, there are 5 MS70 Early Releases S1$ Colorized Year of the Horse Specimens indicated in the census. Noteworthy to this years release of their Lunar series, I sent in a pr

Are we coin collectors all a little crazy?

Or do we grasp for any straw to justify our OCD issues related to coin collecting? I have written two posts dealing with the fact that I have recently entered the world of collecting ancient coins and sometimes I feel like I stepped into the twilight zone. The quirkiness of some of those I have "met" (only via email or posts at ancient web sites) has occasionally totally dumbfounded me. The major issue with these collectors seems to be my preference for encapsulating ancient coins. Many of

Garys March Coin of the Month

Garys March Coin of the Month (Volume 3 Number 7) features a copper NGC AU-58 1790s 1/2 penny Conder Token (D and H-36D). During the late 18th Century, the widespread use of merchant tokens in the United Kingdom filled a void left by the government's failure to mint enough coins for commerce. These tokens provided an effective means for merchants to advertise their wares or in the case of this token, propagate a political cause.   Now lets say that you owed a debt you could not pay. 2013 Winter coin over veiw

A look at the changes I made. Friends, As the winter months come to an end and spring is around the corner I look at my collection to see the changes that were made the past few months. The sun will beam out next month and most of us will head outside to other hobbies that have waited for spring to finally show up. My winter this year was a great addition of proof set pieces 1999 to date and some really nice business strike additions as well. I did manage to add a few 1800s coins that will

Seeing Stars

Working for a bank paid off again. Being a collector, I feel blessed to work at a bank, particularly on days such as last week. We got a cash shipment in and we received two bricks of FED wrapped $1 bills. I always get excited when we receive FED wrapped money, because the possibility of interesting serial numbers is there. This particular instance, there serial numbers were nothing of note, but I did notice that the blue bands on the strap of one set of bills was broken, indicating star no

One journey to the next...

Sooooooo, major changes are coming (have already started) to my sets. When I started my Lincoln 1959-Date set in 2005 I had no idea what type of grades I was going to fill the set with. Fast forward to January 10, 2014 and I had the #3 set in the series. Aside from topping Doug's or Jack's set, there is no where else to go. Because of a deal I have with David Luksic, I could have guaranteed myself about another 5,000 pts, a solid lead at #3, and some very nice coin additions to my set. I a

What Does It Take ?

I have not received my coins back yet from being graded but I checked the website and boy what a disappointment! I thought I had figured out a secret to looking at proof sets still in the mint plastic and depending on the way they were toning I was sure to get a cameo or two. I bought four different early 60s proof sets and a 1955 proof set using my theory on four different occasions from four different dealers and found that I was getting cameos every time they were toned in this way. Cold Hard Cash...

My post today is more of a light humored stab at this ridiculous winter. I know this post doesnt feature a coin but bear with me, I think you will enjoy it nevertheless. Cold hard cash is exactly how you would describe my featured five dollar British Antarctic Territory note. This note represents a few of the things I dislike (winter) and some that I love (Britannia). I dont like the cold, especially this current winter. You see, I work outside for a living which makes my job a breeze in the

NOW MY COLLECTION HAS A PRINCESS

Last adoptee : Adoption Central now closed down for cleaning. Today, UPS brought to my door the last of my trade INS. I have been doing a lot of trading and buying recently, attempting to change my collection from mostly modern to mostly pre-1933 gold, Morgans, and silver US coins. I have tried to keep them in the under 50 population, and highest grade or next to that. I am going now, to sit back after adding this one, look hard at what I am doing, meaning, am I right in exiting the mor

First Goal Reached!!!

Proof sets: 1950-1964 I finally made my first goal!! When I started collecting as a child of 9 years old I never thought that 55 years later I would be sitting here typing this. I had a break (a career in the Army and then another Career in Government service) that spanned 6 decades before I would seriously take up collecting again. Things have changed. The reason I started in the first place was the change in the Lincoln cent from the Wheat back to the Memorial reverse. Now that same 195

Old Green Holders... Smaller Rattler Slabs vs Regular Size OGH Slabs?

To me these two types of slabbed coins along with the old NGC "Fatty" Slabs are by far the best of the older slabs. And the oldest slabs from the oldest third party graders that go by the name... Greetings Again Collectors, Not sure why, but I'm in a writing mood that I have plotted out at least a couple dozen+ more journal topics to write on. And more seem to be popping up at the rate of several a day. So many in fact, I have gotten to the point that I am having to start a list, so that I d

Coin Stories

Which coins tell better stories? Last Saturday I went to a small coin show near Alexandria, VA. It seemed pretty crowded to me, but one of the dealers told me that it had been a lot busier earlier in the day. He was familiar - a guy who had been a regular at meetings of the Early American Coppers club at the Baltimore shows. He asked me what I collect, and I told him: high grade, mostly certified, large cents and half dimes. He responded that such coins do not interest him because they do no

All That I Write Here, is Aimed Toward my Fellow Collectors...

Thank all of you, very much! Your thank you emails make the time I spend, very well worth it. Greetings my Fellow Collectors, In my entire life of collecting coins, I have made more mistakes and have been taken by dealers who saw me coming from a mile away. In each one of those, what I would like to call miss-steps, but deep down I know they were nothing but stupid mistakes, that was no ones fault but mine. Gosh, to be able to go back to the very beginning, and do it all over again would be

SLAB OR COIN?

BROWN LABEL CIVAL RIGHTS RARE? Hi, everyone. Read with great interest W.K.F.s post about the different third party certifiers. Bravo to saying what he did about the TV guy. If I sold all my collection for what he is getting, I might be upper middle class. SERIOUSLY! I collect the Modern Commemoratives, and so far through out the years I have been getting the NGC Brown label. Trying to keep it uniform I guess. Usually I send some in for grading, but this time for the 2014 Civil Rights on

What is Better, NGC, PCGS or ANACS? or buying from The HSN?

In my opinion only two of the above are worth owning...& HSN is one place that should be exposed as to who & what they are... Greetings Collectors,   The argument continues as to which of the third party graders are the best? All three of the above have changed their slab's appearance, as the three have done several times before in the past, with PCGS having changed more times than the other two. But as I have said before in previous posts, always buy the coin and never just buy t

No Joy Today

The down side to too much snow. Well, in my Baltimore suburb we got about 12 inches of snow from the first blast of this storm. That was enough to close many work places and schools. I spent over 4 hours digging myself and a neighbor out this morning. Part two is dumping a few more inches as I type. I was anticipating arrival of two packages today: an acquisition, pictured below, from the recent Heritage auction; and a couple new SAEs. The tracking information says both are out for delivery

NGC MS66RB 1955DDO My coin of a lifetime and a new direction

New sets being added Hi everyone. I hope everyone is staying safe and warm with all this cold weather we are having. Even here is the sunshine state we have been experiencing some unusually cold weather this year. Most of you who follow me know that I am mostly a Lincoln cent collector. After completing my 1959-date Lincoln circulation issues set I was looking for a new direction to go in. At one time I did have a very nice short set 34-58 wheat ear. Started My Fencing Coin Custom Set

I have a bunch of nice coins but only two slabbed examples so far. The ongoing Winter Olympics has inspired me to start organizing my collection of modern commemoratives featuring the sport of fencing. Although fencing is not a winter sport, it is one of five sports which has been featured at every one of the modern Olympic Games. As I mentioned in one of my journals from last year (http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/JournalDetail.aspx?JournalEntryID=14114), I have been assembling a colle
