Garys May Coin of the Month

This months Coin of the Month (Volume 3, Number 9) is my first column featuring a coin I do not own. Instead, it is an NGC MS-66+ 1951-S Washington Quarter from the personal collection of NGC Collectors Society member Yankeejose. I am featuring Yankeejoses coin for reasons that shall become apparent in the body of this months post. Therefore, I am blending a narration on the Washington Quarter with a show report of the recently concluded 75th Central States Numismatic Society convention. Our

Young collector !!!

Youngest collector following his dad 3 year old son is following the footsteps of his father. Gabriel Freire Pavao has gained a new interest in collecting coins. He was admiring new additions to their collection. This is truly inspiring parenting. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

1921 High Relief Peace Dollar Registry Points

It's a head scratcher I was viewing Peace Dollar Circulated registry sets and notice that the top 3 sets have 1921 Peace Dollars in MS 66, which gets them 10,076 registry points. The fourth place set has a 1921 Peace Dollar in MS 67, but only gets 7,431 registry points. So they lose 2,645 registry points for a higher grade, hmmmmmm. Newly Completed Near-Gem to Superb-Gem 1905 Proof Set

Gem quality U.S. Philippine Proof Sets of any year are a challenge to assemble and the 1905 Proof Set, with its ultra low mintage of only 471 sets, is the ultimate challenge. U.S. Philippine Proof Sets were not sold in any sort of protective packaging or cases but were contained in plain paper envelopes and each coin was wrapped individually in thin tissue paper. This method of packaging has contributed to the micro thin hairline scratches seen on most proof coins as well as the heavy toning o

and a few nicer upgrades I've been quiet on the journal side of the hobby since the new year, and for the most part I've been quiet in the purchasing part also. I have kept my eyes open for the one Walker I want for my short set to upgrade to MS67--and then will be officially "done" with the set. I have no desire to pay double or more of the value of a coin so that my slab has a +plus or a *star so there is nowhere left to go to improve this set numerically. Also I am quite pleased with the

My Latest NEWP from the CSNS Show for my Type Set

I will have more to say on this very different show experience later but I couldnt wait to display the newest addition to my 7070 basic type set. I have always loved Indian Head Cents and this one charmed me from the git-go. I had spied out this particular cent from Gary Adkins and Associates website but felt I needed to see it in the hand before I bought it. When I got to the show I went to his table where he had a very nice MS-61 example and I asked him if he brought the coin from his websit

Update on my 1327 yr 7 20 Para

Had a good submission!! Well....my girlfriend had her 5 free NGC grades, and we recently used them to send off some world coins. We both split our grades up 3 and 2 when we get them, as we both become due to rejoin at different times of the year. So I used my one of my 2 grades for my 1327 yr 7 Ottoman 20 Para, and it came back an AU 50!! For a coin that is unknown in any mint state grade, I think I did pretty well!! New Roosevelt RPM CONECA Listing

Just got word today that CONECA will be listing a new RPM that I sent in to Dr. James Wiles for examination two weeks ago. 1952-D Roosevelt dime D/D Rotated CW will be listed as RPM-003. See photo below of the RPM, or I just created a Wordpress blog to put up photos, here: www.1952d10crpm003.wordpress.com I believe that this RPM may already be listed by Kevin Flynn under RPM-003 as well. Entering the Foray of Registry Sets

A Long time collector starts his very first registry set after initially shunning the concept when it first came out. I started collecting in my pre-teen years when my grandfather sent me 25 pounds of wheat cents out of the blue. My father purchased me a couple of whitman albums and I was hooked. I branched out like many others through my pocket change and infrequent trips to the coin shops in my city. About ten years ago I realized I had some nice circulated albums and was working my way th

1/2 oz. Gold First Spouse

Of the group that I have. I like the look of this one!! Friends, I don't have the full set of first spouse gold coins. Of the ones I do have I like the look of the Mint State coins more than the Proof coins. This Jefferson pic here with the wavy hair and the soft texture flow seems to look the best out of the group I have even though it is not the rarest. Enjoy---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

It's horrible having OCD, especially with coins

I just need one more to tie... I have been VERY slowly concentrating on one proof set in the registry...the 1971. I have made a few purchases throughout the years, some of which got me a very verbal tongue lashing (but it was worth it!). More than 5 years ago, I did see the coin that my collection has been lacking, the 1971 PF 69 Ultra Cam Lincoln cent, and it was with Heritage auction, and bidding was @ $600. I knew from experience from my other purchases, that this one may make me a bachelor

1893 $20 MS64+ Among Finest Graded

1893 Double Eagle with Gorgeous Color--Tied for finest graded at PCGS. With each interesting new acquisition for the Grandview Collection of Liberty Double Eagles, I plan to describe the coin and relevant background information with a journal post. The 1893 Double Eagle is considered common in grades of MS62 and lower. In MS63, it becomes scarce and sells for a premium over ultra-common dates like 1904, 1900 and 1903. At the MS64 level, it becomes difficult to find and is undervalued in

High Grade MacArthur Commemoratives

Probably not the ones you're expecting though. Both of these coins were designed by famed sculptor Laura Gardin Frasier and were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1947. The "S" mintmark appears just below the date on the reverse. They were struck in very shallow relief and can be extremely difficult to obtain in high grades. These coins represent several firsts. - First coins minted for the newly independent "Republic of the Philippines." - First commemorative coins honoring General D

Modern Commemorative Half Dollars

Just what collectors were they intended for Friends, I have purchased and sold very many Modern Commemorative half dollars but never bought any mint wrapper sets. There are many sets built by us that are from already graded coins and I was surprised to get the mint package ones that came this weekend. For the collectors that build these sets I thought a pic of mint packaged sets would be interesting. Below is a pic of 4 Modern Commemorative half dollar coins in a mint wrapper that were int

So Long IKE, its Been Fun

After a long and cordial run collecting Eisenhower Dollars, it is time for me to part ways to pursue other interests. Several Years ago I started on a quest to complete a set of circulation grade Eisenhower Dollars. I set a goal for this set to have the best-graded coins I could afford after which I aggressively bought the coins necessary to complete the set. Along the way, I discovered that high-grade non-silver MS-66 and 67 Eisenhower Dollars were scarce and focused on buying one MS-67 Eis

Really Collectors Society?

Really? Really? Recently I got one of the most incredible coins, one that I have been chasing for years. Top of the pop by PCGS! However, oh my, the Collectors Society does not allow PCGS graded coins in the World Competitive sets... While I do not collect coins to put in the sets, well I felt cheated by the Society. This is a coin worth thousands of point and believe me, I am not about to spend 100 just to change holder to NGC (after adding S&H both ways + grading, etc). While normally I

fairly good results with this submission The day after I received my 2014 proof set I sent it in to NGC for grading on 2 submission forms. I used my 5 coin free early bird coupon for the Penny thru dollar coins. And sent the quarters and pres. dollar coins on the other. I received the results yesterday on the quarter and dollar coins. as far as the quarters I received 4 out of 5 PF 70 UC with the Great sand dunes getting a grade of PF 69 UC. the Dollar coins did not do so well. Random Coin Thoughts

Odds and ends I've had some random coin related thoughts since my last journal that I thought I would share. I helped out at a different branch today. Evidently, to my dismay, someone deposited 40 Morgan Dollars there. The depositor didn't know what he had and the branch didn't realize their value either. Unfortunately, someone got them before I did. A day late and a Morgan Dollar short. I am working on a 20th Century type set folder for my niece. She saw me pUtting coins into it on F

MY 100TH COIN!

My collection reached 100 this week! I recently surpassed the 100 coin mark in my GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION. I was hoping for some feedback, critique and even compliments on the set and it's presentation. I've seen so many great sets on here and I have tried to incorporate great ideas and features from many of them. Thanks in advance and have fun collecting! Since my last Ottoman contribution got some nice attention, here's another!!

Another pretty sweet Ottoman rarity!! I'm pretty new to the Journal thing, but since I got some nice feedback for the last one, I thought I'd share another coin. This time, it's a 1336 yr 2 silver 5 Kurush. The western date on this coin is 1919, and it has an interesting story as well. Like many other nations, the Ottoman Empire issued huge amounts of coinage in the first years of it's participation in World War I ( aside from 1915 dated 5 and 20 Paras, of course!). Those huge mintages in

Garys April coin of the Month

This month my Coin of the Month feature (Volume 3 Number 8) will touch on three events. The first event relates to the coins origin in the Ukraine and represents my hope for an acceptable and peaceful resolution to Ukraines ongoing conflict with Russia. Next, this coin commemorates the 2009 International Year of Astronomy and corresponds to my fascination with space exploration. Finally, there will be a lunar eclipse on the night of April 14/15, 2014 that directly correlates to the person depict
