Smile! 1, 2, 3!

Does anyone else hate it when they count before taking a picture? OK, having troubles taking consistent pictures of my registry coins. I am able to get a great white (NGC) background in one picture but with the same elements the next pic comes out brown. The coins show up nice, but it's a horrible presentation. I use a finepix S1000 (old). Is it me or could the camera simply be wearing out? Come to think of it, I've never had luck with this camera regardless of what the subject is.

I know, I should do research FIRST before asking...

Oklahoma isn't any magnet for coin shows, but I'm sure we have one pass through occasionally. If anyone knows of coin shows in the OKC area please let me know. It's been 20 years and I remember staying hours and hours till my back hurt. I would surely like to meet other people of like-mind other than online. Seeing some nice coins would be fun too... A Copper Weekend

Trade SILVER for Copper Friends,   This weekend was a different switch as of the regular. Thursday I went to a local coin shop to trade Silver coins for Coppers. He had mentioned before that he was wanting to rid of all his copper stash.   As he had a nice group of Indians and large cent pieces I figured it would be a fun task. I ended up getting 2 books of wheats, 1 book 1909 to date, 70 rolls of memorials, 50 rolls of wheats, 70 large cents, 50 indians, and a few hundred wheats and

Collecting modern coins, take II

Here for modern coins that, I think, have investment potential. Shhh don't tell though. This is a continuation of the thread that was started about a week ago. We were talking about ordering mint sets and sending in a handful of coins to try to get a few top population for grade. If you order 10 mint sets (~$30 per set with shipping) that's $300. If you submit 2 coins from each set that will add on an additional $15 per coin minimum, that adds an additional $300. So we are up to $600. Fo

Time to Eat Crow

In light of a document I recently discovered, I must amend a journal I wrote nearly three years ago. On November 27, 2011 I wrote the Journal entry entitled "Obverse or Reverse?" (http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/JournalDetail.aspx?JournalEntryID=9876) in which I came to the conclusion that contrary to conventional wisdom, the shield/date side of the coins in the US/Philippine series should be designated as the obverse and the figure/denomination side should be the reverse. This was a

lots of coins Two months ago my mother-in-law had passed away and while we were going through her belonging we came across her coin collection. I brought every single coin home. We have 2 coin safes to which I have not had a chance to catalog all of the coins. They are in 20 banker boxes. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Getting close to complete on a modest set!

Red_brains Lincoln memorial toners Some collectors' dream sets are Morgans, WLH, mercs, SLQ, bust halves, etc. and if I had the cash I would surely go big as well. For now, I get a lot of mileage out of this set, which is nearing completion. Check out how it's going in the custom set section, and let me know what you think! Someday, if $ or time becomes available, I would love to get professional photos done. Maybe I should change my handle to redbrown_brains? Cheers --and happy collecting

Great disapointment short lived

A lesson learned! I have searches saved for certain coins on Collectors Corner, I had received an Alert that a 1861 Silver Dollar PCGS XF40 had been listed, this was on a certain Friday evening. Through this website I agreed to purchase this coin, the website said the dealer would contact me. I was happy that I would finally purchase this elusive coin. All Civil War silver dollars are scarce. I contacted the dealer myself Monday morning. I was very much disappointed when I was told the coin

Finally !! A Submission Grand Slam !!

If only they were my own coins... One of my recent journals I chronicled of how I just was handed another large consignment, this time by a distant relative. One of the first steps I took after inventorying everything was to pick out around 40 coins that had nice price jumps from 69 to 70 or were selling at a significant premium in slabs instead of being raw. If I may take a moment and refresh some newer members here on my hard luck history of submissions. I'm the guy who sends in unopened

An Unusual Find

Over the years, I have retrieved Indian Head Cents, Buffalo Nickels, and War Nickels from circulation. Adding to those finds are hundreds of wheaties and an occasional silver coin. However, I have never found a proof coin in circulation... That is until now. Summer is a great time for day tripping and occasional stops along the way for fuel and refreshments. If you pay cash for your purchases, more often than not by the time the trip is over, you come home with a pocketful of change. Now my

Top Canada 1 CENT Registry Set

Need some advice from collectors/investors/hobbyists Hello, I am building a registry set through a fund. We have several complete high grade modern sets. However, many coins are graded by PCGS. Has anyone had experience crossing these coins over? Is it worth it? These are client coins, and I am hestitant to reholder them unless they grade higher. It appears as though NGC does not allow PCGS coins in their World Registry Sets. I am assuming that the higher value coins have already bee

Does anyone know the way to Denver?

For several years I have hunted for the fabled "D". I have been putting together a Satin set of Lincolns since... well, since they started making them. I decided to make the goal of MS69. On my budget that made for a lot of hunting and a lot of waiting for the magical price. I made pretty good progress until I got to the 07D and 08D's. They were non-existent or way out of my price range. I have been neglecting my search for about a year, having other things of precedence, but started lookin

Another Mediocre Submission

2014 Mint Sets still are not impressive. At Least I got four MS68's and there was a few I could add to my registry. I must be a glutton for punishment though. I ordered another 25 mint sets. What is the definition of crazy?... I am quite pleased finding a pair of Lincoln Shields though. 001 2011 P ANDREW JOHNSON $1 MS 67 002 2011 P JAMES GARFIELD $1 MS 67 003 2012 P GROVER CLEVELAND 1ST TERM $1 MS 66 004 2014 D 1C MS 67 RD 005 2014 D 1C MS 68 RD

In the Nick of (Half) Dime?

Adding my 2 cents worth to RichH's post... Rich just obtained a nice 1859 silver three cent piece. Well, I'll raise him 2 cents! I just got a nice 1859 half dime. NGC graded it MS 67 star, and CAC approved. It is pretty. The last few stars and the toe area are a little weak, but the strike is otherwise pretty good. The luster and toning are nice as well. There are a few tiny marks, most notably a nick on Miss Liberty's left wrist/hand (the one holding the pole). The 1859 half dime is a on

Coin arrives in the nick of Trime

Coin arrives in the nick of Trime I received today the 1859 CAC MS-63 3 Cent silver I had ordered last week. Initially I had received a package from the seller on Monday, but when I opened it, my jaw must have dropped as I was looking at a 1926 MS65FB CAC Mercury Dime, certainly a nice coin, but not a trime by any means. I called the dealer and he was quick to make amends. I sent the Mercury back, and was credited with my shipping plus an addition "inconvenience" credit and all is now well.

"Unaffiliated" Purchases--Just Because

Do you believe in love at first sight? I have on my computer as one of the Favorites or quick links, an article reprinted by David Bowers from a very old issue of "The Numismatist." The article has a wonderful old list of "The Ten Commandments of Numismatics"--I believe that I just broke number 4. I will add a link to the 10 commandment list/article when this appears on the chat boards. Without changing windows for reference real quick, I believe Commandment #4 relates to staying focused o

THANK YOU RED BOOK AND NGC

Sloppy Numismatic Research can benefit some and hurt others On Saturday June 28th I attended a local auction that had several coin lots. Viewing was on Friday the day before. Most of the lots were foreign except for one US lot and one ancient lot with the best coin in the ancient lot being a St. Patrick Halfpenny (U.S colonial). I really wanted a couple of the world coin lots and did bid on them but I had to drop out because I only had so much money and I know I would need most if not all f

Garys July Coin of the Month

For most of my collecting life, I have collected nothing but US type coins. Then in 2008, I expanded my collecting objectives to include world coins. Later I began collecting tokens and medals that fit a specific narrative I wanted to pursue. Today my collection is going places I never could have imagined as I have recently added a handful of ancient coins to my collection. The featured coin this month (Volume 3, Number 11) is a NGC choice AU Roman Empire Double Denarius dating AD 244-249. The

Watch for my cosignments at greatcollections

30 coin tryout I sent in my first 30 coin consignment to GreatCollections on Monday. They say it will be in week after next auction I'll let you all know when they are for sale and the lot numbers. It would be great if my Fellow Collectors here at NGC could support me with this sale as it is the test to see if I use them again. And I am in desperate need of the cash this sale would bring to my coffers. Thank you, Happy Collecting And may God Bless...Mike To see old comments for this Journa

Chicken Wings & Very Old Coin!

A neat lunch time find! The other day I left my office to run some errands during lunch. In the process, I grabbed lunch at a local Buffalo Wild Wings. I was craving some spicy garlic bone-in wings and figured I would grab a bite to eat in route to the various stores I needed to visit. Upon asking for the bill, I decided to pay cash and gave the waiter a $20. He brought back my change and I noticed a very large penny in the bunch or what appeared to be a penny. My initial thought prior to pick
