"Finalized/Imaged/Shipped"

Latest round of (mostly favorable) results The status of my two recent submissions changed to "Finalized/Imaged/Shipped" today. My previous results have been mixed (most of us can probably say the same) - some grades as expected, some higher, some lower, and a few purple labels or, years ago, "body bags". I submitted four GSA Morgans with my "free" Collectors Society coupon. I didn't have a fifth GSA so that slot went to waste. The first coin was a 1880-CC Reverse of 1878 I bought recent

Do key date coins get a bump in grade?

1934-S S$1 in MS-65 or should it be 64. I must admit that the coin might have graded a 64 if it were a Philadelphia issue. I think that the key or semi key dates get a slight "benefit of the doubt" so that the grading services can keep them their holders. This, i my opinion is more common with the Heritage-PCGS connection but I could be wrong... what do you all think? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 2014 50th anv set Kennedy P Proof coin

A really rare coin I received this email on ebay about the 2014 Kennedy 50th Anniversary Set Hello, I see you are selling the 2014 P Kennedy Proof half dollar. I have this set too and I believe I am actually the first person to discover something of even greater value about this particular coin of the 4 coins set, that the mint did not tell anyone about. You see the very last time the Philadelphia mint made a proof set of coins was in 1964 which was of course the first year of the Kennedy h

Petite Real

I don't mind the hole. I just added a nice little 1/4 Real to my Latin American Beauties collection. It is a Colonial issue of Philip II and looks nicer than most that I have seen of this scarce coin type/denomination. Yes it is pierced, as many are, but it does not detract from the eye appeal in my opinion. It is slightly heavy for the issue as well. A very charming addition to my collection. The Trading floor was humming the last 10 days.

Attention Collectors: feast your eyes on this one. My phone has been humming with making trades all over the place. The other day my 1870 $10 MS60 went to Texas. The new owner was elated and the money did not grow any grass here. I found a wonderful coin which I had been secretly searching for and up it popped one day last week and I received it in my hand today. It is a 1907 High Relief $20 Wire Rim PF65. This is a collectors coin. Frank Leach became mint director of the San Fran

2014 Kennedy 50th Anniversary Set

Just arrived Howdy Friends, I just received my Kennedy 50th Anniversary Set in PF70 and SP70 condition. I worked up a collage of all four coins showing the obverse and reverse of each. It's a good looking set that I am pleased to add to my Kennedy registry. I don't know if I will ever get the gold coin and I'm a bit disappointed that NGC added it to the set, but not much I can do about it. I had hoped to complete a full set until the gold coin was added, don't know if I will ever complete th

SP70 DPL ENHANCED FINISH SILVER KENNEDY's

I GOT 6 SP70 DPL(2) & PL(4) ENHANCED FINISH OUT OF 15 SETS OF THE 50th ANNIVERSARY SILVER KENNEDY FOUR COIN SETS. WITH ENOUGH OF THE OTHER COINS TO COMPLETE 8 SETS OF 70's SO FAR, I HAVE SENT IN 40 SETS OF THE "50th ANNIVESARY SILVER HIGH RELIEF KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR SETS". OF THE FIRST 20 SETS GRADED I GOT 4 COMPLETE SETS OF 70's, AND OF THOSE 15 SETS THERE ARE 8 COMPLETE 70 SETS, STILL WAITING ON THE LAST FIVE SETS TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED. I WILL UPDATE WHEN I GET THE RESULTS. THANKS FOR LOOK

I AM TICKLED

KENNEDY'S ON WAY HOME Hi everyone. I sent in two of the Kennedy silver 4 coin sets, and this afternoon I checked my invoice and they are done. Much to my surprise The one rev pf and one pf got a 69 and the two unc, which I thought would be a 69 each got a 70. So I am ticked. I have a complete set of 70s out of the 2 sets. I also sent in just for the heck of it 3 each of the clad 2 coin sets. One was a 68, 3-66, 1-67, and 1-65. I am happy though. I consider this a success. If I can, I

Newest Elephant

One of the Finest Graded I just added another Belgian Congo 1943 2 Francs piece to my collections. I actually have a few, but as many of you know, it's nice to keep upgrading when you can. So I finally added a new piece graded NGC MS65, which passes up my PCGS MS64. And for those of you who do not know the series, NGC has only graded 2 in MS65 and one in MS66, while PCGS has only graded 5 in MS64, 4 in MS65, and none higher. So as you can see it is a tough coin to find this nice. I was ou

Just Because

sometimes there is no reason I'll keep this journal entry short and sweet. The title refers to my latest purchase. The coin fits no set; it is in an old series, small ANACS holder; it can't even be listed into my registry coin manager to be added into my overall collection. I bought it "just because." If I must give a reason, it was for the simple enjoyment of holding it in my hand and looking at it through a loupe and turning it under the light and watching the different colors appear and

My First Coin Show

Too many Morgan Dollars, too few Mercury Dimes A few weeks back I attended my very first coin show. It was just a local show, sponsored by the Fort Worth Coin Club but since it was to be my first I had been looking forward to it for months. As a newbie collector I truly had no idea what to expect. However following online advice I arrived armed with a short but very specific list and cash in my pocket. My list consisted of four Mercury Dimes, NGC Certified MS66 FB. The show was larger and mo

ANY LUCK?

CROSSOVER WORKED??? Hi, curiously has anyone had good luck sending in PCGS coins for crossover to NGC PF/MS 70 and received one for one 70s in return? I ask, because I have some I am interested in getting reholdered in NGC and wonder if it is worth the try. Thanks folks and as always look forward to all your help and expertise. Time to make some room for new submissions

Not interested in buying another safe!! Friends,       Well I am getting the ball rolling again and will need room for around 400 new coins. I decided to send a box full to Heritage for Orlando Fun but first ran an add in Money Market @ 50% off listed FMV. The sales may be loss of invested but will generate the cash needed for all the new picks I have saved for submission to NGC.               Happy Coin Collecting!! So less can be more

or maybe Blue has turned Red, no, no I mean Red turns Red Brown, that's it! This March at the Baltimore Show I cherry picked a raw 1900 Indian Cent that came back MS65RB from NGC. A few weeks ago at the November Baltimore Show I then sold my long ago acquired 1900 PCGS MS65RD Registry Indian Cent for a tidy profit and have now taken it from my inventory and replaced it in my Somerville registry set with the new 1900 NGC MS65RB.       What, less points and substituting an intentionally

Baseball HOF coin and the SF Giants!

A great series to watch. Hi everybody,               I had a great time watching the World Series this year. Both KC and SF were pretty much evenly matched but I think one of the reasons it tipped the series to my Giants was how the DH effects the strategy in the National League compared to the American League.               Anyways, I have patiently waited to purchase a graded proof version of the HOF silver $1 and it paid off quite well. I scored my coin for $69 off of EBay

Has NGC started to adjust price value? Has anyone notice that the price guide has been updated. What I mean some of my coins have no movement on the price forever but my 1992 1C MS 69 RED INCREASED 26.88% To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

My First "Mintage = 1" Coin!

I have managed to get hold of a "Mintage 1", or only coin ever minted, coin for my custom set. MINTAGE = 1.       This coin was the pattern strike for the 1979 0.925 New Hebrides Silver Mother and Infant coin. The strike quality and detail of this pattern coin ultimately lead to the acceptance of this coin for minting. The coin created a fair bit of controversy, and only 60 pieces were minted. Each of the 60 coins minted have the "925" stamped on the obverse of the coin. The pattern strik
