FOLLOW-UP ON MAIL BOX ALARM

INSTALLED AND TESTED Well I got my alarm in the "MAIL" a few days ago and it took less than 10 minutes from package opening to install and try out. This thing really works. I did a lot of studying on it before I ordered it and what was nice about this model is it has a built in volume control, which is great. It also has a red light on it and it is real bright. One touch of the reset button after you get your mail and it's ready to go again. If anyone is interested in it I bought this

Wrapping up 2014

Adult ADD in collecting, thanks eBay! Well, 2014 is quickly coming to a close and boy did I learn a lot this year about collecting. Maybe I should say, I learned a lot about my poor collecting habits! Turns out I like a lot of things and well, eBay doesn't help the new collector stay focused. After spreading my money around between Westward Journey Nickels, Statehood and ATB Proofs, and finally my Susan B. Anthony collection, I didn't complete anything but I sure had fun! 2015 should be

One Last Lincoln Cent For The Year-Population of 1/0

1996 D MS68PL Lincoln Memorial. It has been a very interesting year for me. If you follow me or like Lincoln small cents then you know that is what I collect. This is a NGC MS68RD PL Lincoln Memorial. NGC has graded approximately 417 examples with 89 graded MS68RD and this lone example at MS68RD PL (proof like) with none graded higher. Wishing all of you the best this coming year and as always, Thanks for Looking and Happy Collecting To see old comments for this Journal entry, click he

GREAT RESPONSE!!!

The US Mint. It would be good if the Mint did offer insurance and a signature to it's buyers, but the thresh hold is $300 I think. Thanks as usual to everyone who replied to my Thieves are out there post. Lots of good feedback Like I said, I ordered a mailbox alarm, it is on it's way, I'll let everyone know my opinion of it when I get it installed. That is unless it gets ripped off. Thanks everyone, for everything. Thanks Rick, To see old comments for this Journal entry, click he

THEIVES ARE OUT THERE.

DON'T LET IT BE YOU Well it finally happened. I had a order from the US Mint coming and I checked the tracker and it showed "delivered". That's fine except for one thing. My regular mail was there and NO package. Got with the Post Office and the carrier insists he put a package in my mailbox at the time noted on the tracker. Got with FedEx as it was shipped Smart post, but nothing I could do, neither one of them seemed interested in helping. Contacted the US Mint and they said I had to f

Merry Christmas to me!

One of my best submission ever!! I have been finding a coin here and there and had waited until I had enough for a submission to make it worth while. I just learned of the results and I am really impressed. The 2014 P SAC MS69 and the 2014 D Kennedy MS69 blew me away. I should be collecting Mint State nickels but I thought collectiing the proofs was enough. The 1972 P nickel MS66 6FS was more than I expected as well. There is only one that exists in that grade before this one. Merry X

Canadian Registry Sets Corrected and a Large Submission Returned

It's been a busy few weeks to end the numismatic year. Since joining the registry I've come to think of my collecting in more of an "annual progress" way. Each year I have goals that I'd like to achieve before the numismatic year ends. I also tend to view a numismatic year from Dec 1st thru Nov 30th as this coincides with the Collectors Society/NGC's dates for registry inclusions of coins to be added into the sets for their yearly awards recognitions. While I didn't aspire to compete for any

Recent Roosevelt Dime Submissions

I hope that I'm not 'counting my chickens before they hatch', but I just checked my order tracking from several Roosevelt dimes that I submitted at the Baltimore show a few weekends ago...and there are a few good upgrades for my set. Here are the best... 1957-P MS 65 FT ...Even though this is not technically an upgrade to my set, the 1957-P is one of the hardest Roosevelts among the silver series to find in FT. It might be the hardest to find. And I'm glad to have this one. 1957-D MS 67 FT

First Crossover Batch on the Way

Starting to cross all PCGS coins over. This comes at a high cost, and high risk - as the coins must cross the Canada-US border. I have decided to cross all my PCGS coins, some pedigreed to major collections like Norweb, Pittman and Eliasberg. One reason, is that I want my registry sets to be recognized as complete in the World Sets. Even more importantly, the variety attributions on the PCGS coins are weak ... and I believe that NGC has improved service over this. I was very disappointed t

A major coin upgrade within my collection-NGC MS67RD 1972 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Memorial CAC certified

Only 8 graded at MS67RD Hi everyone. Well, I had hope too add this one before the cutoff for the NGC registry sets but it did not come up for auction until the day after. For the longest time I had a PCGS MS66+RD example CAC certified in this slot. i bought this coin for a decent price back then and had it sent into CAC. Of course I had hoped to upgrade this coin someday. I had not seen a NGC example come up for auction in over 8 years. The last 4 PCGS MS67RD examples that came up for au

The Australian Grand Slam

Kangaroos, Koalas,Kookaburra and Lunar After suffering a difficult year building my collections, I did manage to achieve one goal, and only one goal, this last year. I wanted to get the #1 set for the Complete Sets of the Australian Kangaroo, Koala, Kookaburra and Lunar Series. The Kangaroo was the most difficult, which I added to that difficulty by mistakenly selling my 2015 proof $1 Kangaroo and having to buy it back a day before the Dec 3rd deadline for updating sets. I'm going to try and f

152 #1 Registry Sets

A year later, only 12 new #1 sets. Each year about now I look at the number of Registry Sets I'm maintaining and first ask myself why am I doing this? Of course, the answer is I love collecting coins and enjoy the hobby tremendously. I had set a goal a few years back of getting to 250 #1 sets. A couple years ago I was just over 100. Last year 140, this year I really slowed down, only getting to 152. Having been laid off my job and being out of work for a year didn't help the cause. Buy a coin,

Walking another step forwards

1935 is a good year!! Well, here we are right before Christmas 2014 and I was gonna cool it for a while with my purchases, since I just picked up a nice 42-S rattler & a 41-S OGH both in MS 65 for my date set. I punched up my normal 'honey-hole' sites and there she was staring me RIGHT in the face. The sharpest MS 65 35-D that I've seen in almost ANY grade and in a 'rattler' with a green bean no less. I was hoping to slip in and get her for around retail (maybe even less? HA!) but W

Walking Astray?

Here's another recent acquisition. Having gotten a couple Gardner half dimes in the October auction, and picking up another pricey half dime at the latest Baltimore show, I am sort of trying to save myself for Part 3 of the Gardner sale in February. (And I still have to pay off the loan for the home improvements, and unexpectedly just had to buy a car.) But I seem unable to hold off completely. A few years ago I decided to work on Mercury Dime and Walking Liberty Half Dollar short sets as lo

HTML Magic

Ugh..a table! http://goo.gl/VcIZ5o Copy and paste the above path I just completed adding a table to another custom set. Not as tough as I thought. Another Variety

Another nice AU coin for my variety collection As I mentioned last time, while I wait for high quality examples of the coins I still need for my Liberty Seated Half Dime (LSHD) basic set, I will be looking for AU to low MS examples of half dime varieties. Kevin Flynn has published his new LSHD reference that lists varieties of the following types: repunched stars; doubled dies; overdates; misplaced dates; and repunched dates. He also identified several different date styles or mint mark sizes

The Fix for Coins Misaligned in their Holders

Somehow this coin got rotated almost 180 degrees in its holder. I put in some strong bids but was not able to win any coins in several world coin auctions this Fall. For the 8 reales collector, it was a special time because quite a few ultra rare varieties were on the block. A 1733/2-MXF in VF-35 sold for $18,800 in Baltimore and a 1778 MoMF in XF sold for over 14000 euros in Barcelona. Last month I was able to take Friday off and visit the Baltimore Show. I enjoyed the dealers room and got

Half Dime Varieties

For the fun of it... The world of Early American Copper collecting is blessed with really good books that detail all the known die varieties and provide information on die states as well. While my collecting was focused on the middle and late date large cents, I used those books to attribute my new purchases and the coins from my childhood collection. But at no time did I ever desire to build a die variety collection. I certainly appreciated the effort and money it would take to do so. Viewing

HTML Modification of my NGC Registry Set

Existing format was boring ... I looked at my custom set and saw an issue. The set listing looked like a webpage full of words without any formatting. I modified the set by: adding a video, adding paragraph headers, adding ordered list, adding url links, and modified the text (bold and italics). More work remains... It Took 9 Cents to Finally Rid My Type Set of No-Grades

Yes, I was finally able to rid my 7070 Type set of no-grades with three coins totaling 9 cents in face value. Those coins are an Eric P Newman pedigreed 1859 AU-58 Indian Head Cent, an 1853 MS-62 half-dime with arrows, and a 1861 MS-64 silver three-cent piece. For the better part of 2014, my 7070 typeset has been the primary focus of my new coin purchases. Of the 13 coins I purchased, there are seven new coins, two upgrades, and four details upgrades. Of course I made other purchases of note i
