Koala Quest

I fell for the Koala's I began to collect Koalas in 2013. I soon set a goal to collect the perfect set. As I searched and found them one at a time it came down to a few that where very hard to find in a 70 grade. The 2008 gilded koala was the hardest. First I had to buy ungraded ones, which were hard to find in themselves, and then I had to have them graded. It finally happened a week before registry awards deadline. The one koala that I did manage to find became the mo

NGC REGISTRY AWARD FOR MY CUSTOM SET!

I was surprised and extremely honored to have received a 2014 NGC Registry Award! I've really enjoyed building this set and researching and fully documenting each coin that I add to the collection. I do have to say that receiving this award was actually more exciting than any coin acquisition I have ever made! [/url] To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Whitened. Ex Jewelry?

Check out this coin. (I hope the links work...) I regularly check the major auction sites and dealer listings for coins that I need for my collection. The upcoming Dallas PNG Invitational auction at Heritage includes one coin of interest: an NGC graded MS 66 1867-S half dime. Here is a link to the Heritage obverse photo: http://coins.ha.com/c/lot-image.zx?saleNo=1218&lotNo=0&lotIdNo=1031&inventoryNo=&id=12230393 Part of my investigation includes scanning prior auction r

My Updated Sesqui Gold Commemorative

A beautiful new piece. About three years ago I bought an MS 63 gold Sesquicentennial commemorative. I love the design of this coin, both the obverse and the reverse are intriguing. On the obverse you have Liberty holding the Declaration of Independence in one hand, and the Torch of Freedom in the other. The reverse is Independence Hall in Philadelphia with a faint sun rising behind the building. You can read much more about the history behind this coin in my gold commemorative registry set,

Unusual Congo Pattern Discovery

Unusual Variety Find! I just bought a rare Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire) 1970 Pewter Essai KM E4 Pewter of KM13 from a major auction company. It weighs 14.36g, uniformed bust three-quarters right, rev. arms, value below, essai stamped below. This seems to be an odd variety that has the word Zaires instead of Zaire on the reverse for the denomination. This is not like the coin pictured in KM nor is it like the gold and gilt coins that I own, which all are spelled in the expected sing

U.S. Philippines PCGS Crossovers

My experience with PCGS crossovers has been very different than the earlier posts on this topic. Over the past few years I have submitted many PCGS graded U.S. Philippine Proof coins to NGC for crossover and all but one have crossed at the PCGS grade or higher. NGC treats U.S. Philippine coins in a somewhat schizophrenic manner in that are considered U.S. Coins in the NGC Registry and the NGC Population Reports but are graded by the NGC World Coin Grading Staff. I am not sure why my experien

PCGS Crossovers

Perhaps your coins did not meet the requirements to be crossed over? I hope your coins did not meet a grader that was having a bad night? and you were the recipient of his bad judgement. It happens, I know that for a fact. I have never been employed as a grader, But I have looked at 18"x2foot deawers of change for almost 60 years, I know a good coin when I see it, and I know the detail when I see it. That being said, I have also had a few bad experiences with ngc, But they have always offered

A difficult year

I had to become more discerning, as a collector. Hi there! Fellow collectors. What a year, for me. Let's see. Where to begin.. Collecting wise. I had to cut back last year, becoming a more descerning collector. I took a bad fall at work, which almost ended my time on this earthly plain. I fell 12 ft. Onto my head. They worked on me for 4 hours in emergency. I was cut from nose to ear. Went blind for a bit. Concussion, and Heart was having a few issues, but the final result ? A severely bro

No more PCGS crossover

$400 later, and almost nothing crossed. For those thinking of crossing PCGS coins, don't bother. I spent $400 crossing PCGS coins to NGC, and most didn't cross. It was ultimately an expensive disappointment and a waste of money. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

A New Year and A New Direction

Breaking up is hard to do!!! So, here we are, a New Year and the contemplation of changing direction in my collecting endeavors. Breaking away from my proof sets will be an emotional change and I'm not really sure I will!! At first I shot for the moon wanting all the proof sets from 1936-1964....seemed simple enough for this Novice! Not so....as I delved into the earlier proof sets (36-42) I realized I was in over my head!! The more I wanted higher grades the more the price was skyrocketin

eBay made the right decision

Fraud averted I had noticed a ebay member with zero feedback selling a 1807 high relief-flat edge $20 double eagle in a PCGS holder, the grade stated MS65. The problem is that no certification number was listed, also the slab was so blurred you couldn't read anything, there appeared two stock photos that were clear. I contacted seller by email yesterday and asked for the certification number, I didn't receive a reply. I believe there was a "buy it now" price when the auction started, that n

NEW NGC HOLDERS

I am liking the new NGC holders! I recently purchased a NGC MS 69 2015 Burundi Silver African Lion Series coin from Modern Coin Mart and noticed that NGC has new holders. The label field is much larger and there are two lips on each side of the label field to hold the label flat and smooth. I know personally I have several labels that are bunched up or uneven, hopefully this new holder will solve that issue. I also noticed that the hologram that usually dominates the entire bottom of the label

CERTAIN COLLECTIONS WILL BECOME IMPOSSIBLE TO BUILD

As time goes forward, certain collections will become impossible to amass on the registry sets, as the number of coins in each set grows, and mintages continue to dwindle. Merry Christmas everyone! Certain registry sets, going forward, look as though they will be increasingly impossible to build. A few I can speak to, in particular, are some of the Canadian commemorative and bullion sets. The Maple Privy Set, for example, is one of my favorites. Every year, the Mint adds four or five n

2014 S 50th Anniversary Set SP looks like a DPL?

Is it worth it to get send a coin back to get a SP to a DPL Just got this set and when I open the box my eyes were wide open...it is the WOW! factor. A nice Xmas and birthday gift to myself . My one thought is should I submit the 2014 S 50th Ann. Silver Kennedy Half Dollar High Relief SP 70 for a DPL SP 70 grade? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. My First 2015 Dated Coin Arrived Today

Getting a jumpstart on a new year and a new set..... I have had a new idea for a topical themed collection as my primary interest for 2015. I must admit that a combination of factors have contributed to this. First, my recent efforts to finish the $2 Twonie polar bear canada series--secondly was a reply on the chat boards by Gary who showed a gorgeous obversed and polar bear reverse design coin from Greenland--and thirdly was the recent perusing of various coin dealers and just entering the

1954 D/D/D

I picked up a roll of 1954-D cents. Still in original bank roll I was surprised to find that the roll had not been tampered with at all!. In it were all of the coins that I was expecting, and more. 9 1954 D/D/D cents. all in good shape and crying to get a grade. 35.00 spent. way more on the grading part. But the returns? priceless.. I sure am glad that I grade pocket change! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
