Also feel free to follow me and click through my coins. Life of a BrokeCoinCollector Volume 1 Well most people want to lose weight or get rich or whatever for New Years. Me? Nope. I wanted to make a dent in my type set for 2015......Ok and get ripped but that's a different story. First two aren't for my type set but

More new pics added of my Lincolns

Great photos of common and not so common date Lincolns For those of you that are following me I apologize as I am not much of a writer or blogger as you can see as I only post one journal entry a year . I once again have new pics that were taken by Mark Goodman. Every time I send Mark coins to be imaged I am amazed by his skill. This time I added 14 sets of obv/rev photos (all Lincolns in this group) to coins in my inventory and sets. I say inventory as two or three of the coins I have not

Above the Bow

I added another variety to my half dime collection. Almost three years ago I bought an 1872-S half dime for my set. It is a boldly colored (though unevenly so), well struck, lustrous, unmarked gem, graded MS67 by PCGS. It is a super coin. But I am going for more than just the registry set. I also want to get as many of the major and minor varieties as I can. This coin is an example of the Mint Mark Below Bow variety. So I was pleased to get a near twin to that coin. From the Heritage auction

Found something Special Hiding on my Gold Dollar

Found something Special Hiding on my Gold Dollar, check out the pics! I also published a version of this on CoinTalk. So I was taking my first photo of my newest coin, and WHAM, something special jumped out at me. A quick look on NGC Explorer, and confirmed what I was seeing. I Just found a 1854 G$1 Type 2 DDO slabbed in a plain vanilla 1854 Type 2. Check it out, let me know if you agree. some Guides say it's worth $1800, but that is clearly optimistic. A non-CAC AU53 was sold by GC 1 year

CONGRATS DUE

To an old friend long gone. Friends, As time passes some sets get broken up and spread to other sets. Recently Paul Kiraly started selling his dimes off. My good pal Todd had collected hard on his dimes till the day he passed away 2 years ago from cancer. He knew then that a rank #1 set in dimes was out of reach which at the time was passed from Jason Colinger to Paul Kiraly. I checked TPETERS dime sets this morning and found not only 1 but 4 rank #1 Roosy sets. I'm sure he is smiling

TWO NEW MS EAGLES?

One Eagle is "Struck at West Point" and has no W. The other is struck at West Point, and has none either? All gold and silver is minted at West Point. Nowhere else. Period! Just a way to sell more coins at a inflated price. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Large Denomination vs. Small Denomination Patterns

Recent discovery in elephant patterns. I have been collecting Belgian Congo coins for many years and discovered some of the 1 franc elephant patterns several years ago. But more recently I discovered that there are some varieties in these elephant coins. The obverses have the same elephant design. However some sport the "PATT" above the elephant and some do not. But the reverses are markedly different as you can see by the photo of the two side by side that I have attached here. I am call

I don't know about an arm, but this one definitely cost a leg...

My new 3-legged buffalo nickel! One of the most popular variety or error coins in history, the three-legged buffalo is most commonly attributed to a mint employee overpolishing a very worn die and completely erasing the buffalo's front-most leg in the process. The error was discovered in 1939 and eventually added to the Red Book, making it an instant key date as exact mintages are unknown, but relatively very low, especially in relation to demand. A high grade 4-legged 1937-D nickel will s

First 1800's Dated Coin for the New Custom Set

And it actually has a bear on each side This coin costs more than I wanted to spend on this "fun" set. However I wanted more than just a bunch of modern commems or panda series coins so I'm going to have to spend a few bucks for some of these more exotic and classic issues to add variety to the set. An 1885 5 franc coin from Denmark--a design celebrating the annual Bern shooting Fest ( of note is that the word Bern can be roughly translated as bear--hence the bear depictions on these coins o

Another Little Lady

Liberty, that is... Although my current focus is on Liberty Seated Half Dimes, I still keep my eyes open for other things like Large Cent upgrades, Capped Bust Half Dimes, and coins for my type set. A new CBHD arrived today. It is an album-toned 1829, in a PCGS OGH graded MS65. Its luster is really nice, signs of contact are minimal, and the strike is good. I got it from the recently completed Heritage auction at the FUN show. This leaves me needing just an 1830 to have one of each date fro

Why I am Certified Holder Agnostic

as long as its NGC or PCGS .... First, congrats to all NGC Registry Award Winners -- WELL DONE ! In the IT word, when you are technology agnostic it means that you are open to buying computing components that work with each other without any special adaptation. In the coin world I consider myself HOLDER AGNOSTIC as long as the certified coin is housed in a NGC or PCGS holder, with the lone exception being that I will also purchase the old ANACS small holder coins when opportunity knocks. NGC vs PCGS registry (Pt 2)

Really? (Yes, really) PCGS coins in the NCG registry are more in point value than their own graded coins? How does this happen? Listen, I didn't want to stir up so much emotion on this. First, let me address my statement, which is partly true. Not ALL the PCGS coins are graded higher. I am only registered with 2 sets, and that is in the 1971 proof set. Now NGC has been messin with the point value of the dime, and I wish they would stop (I lost 2960 points without touching it) but if you wil

Rarities in the Canada Silver Privy Maple Set

The Canada>Bullion>Silver Maple Leafs with Privy Marks Set Privy marked SMLs are notoriously difficult to collect in high grade, and the elusiveness of the set has made it all the more desirable. First off, these are bullion coins, so prior to 2007, most of these coins were stamped out and packed in an SP67/SP68 grade. If you look through the populations, you will see a number of SP64/SP65 OGP coins being graded by NGC. Second, the 9999 purity of the coin makes them very soft and

Why are there no NGC 70 graded coins of the Sacagawea Coin and Currency Set

No Graded 70's for the SP Enhanced Sacagawea Dollar Coin and Currency Set Why are there more 70's graded 2014 S Sacagawea $1 Native Hospitality Ultra Cameo while 2014 SACAGAWEA $1 Native Hospitality SP ENHANCED DOLLAR COIN & CURRENCY SET are graded 69? You would think that the mint would have been more careful with the 50,000 coin and currency set. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Back in the Picture additions

Nothing worse than not seeing exactly what I have. Friends, Around 6 months ago my computer crashed and shut down. I have since been useing a small lap top till I could afford a new tower. Coin additions came in every month till December keeping the extra cash too low to afford anything else. Finally----A new tower yesterday. Charged the battery in the camera and hooked all the needed hardware up to get pics rolling once more. I still need a good picture shop program to make the great lo

Collecting Has Gotten Grizzly

sorry--couldn't resist adding that groaner title Well as usual, I have started a new set with a reckless petal to the metal approach. I have made the rough beginnings of my Custom Set with bears as the theme. I have discovered a few things. The size of this collection will be determined by whether I aim for a smaller set with wide variation--or whether I shoot for the broad spectrum of adding any and all coins with bears. In spite of my rather full throttled beginning ( I already have 8 co

Doubled Die Obverse or Strike Doubling?

I just got the coin and noticed the doubling on STATES OF AMERICA. This looks like strike doubling to me. Primarily due to the linear direction of the doubling rather than rotational. The doubling is toward the 12 o'clock position rather than to the left of each letter. What do you all think? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
