Added pics to my sets on page 4 in my registry this week
Friends,
For a few years now I have slowly been adding to my 1999 to date proof sets. A few weeks ago as I was grabbing a few more NGC PF70UC's for my 1979 and 80's sets I decided to start adding pics to my 1999 to date proof sets. Finally today I have all but 1 coin pic in all those sets. Many went to rank #1 with the pics added and sure make it look like a swell accomplishment. I have a few more coins on the way and now will be ventu
At Work!
I work in a credit union, so I am lucky enough to have access to a large supply of coin and currency to look through.
This morning, I was auditing one of my tellers and I came across a yellowish colored nickel. Immediately, I flipped it over and saw the large 'D' over Monticello. She is is a 1945 Jefferson beauty.
A member came in and asked if we had any silver dollars. I laughed to myself, thinking that if any ever came in, they would not be going home with anyone but me.

A very attractive 1855 MS-63 BN half-cent has found a home in my collection.
The NGC Collectors Society Dansco 7070 Type Set has slots for the Draped Bust Half-Cent (1800-1808), the Classic Head Half-Cent (1809-1835), and the Coronet Half-Cent (1849-1857). Since I already own the Draped Bust and Classic Head Half-Cents, all I needed was the Coronet Half-Cent to complete my set. That was until yesterday when the piece pictured in this post arrived in the mail. With the half-cent portion of my c
I am tempted to buy the following top graded error coin, after a recent journal I did on this specific coin.
I recently did a journal on the "CHIIE" error coin and I found it so interesting that I began heavily researching the coin, and images/backstory on this coin. I discovered the top population coin is currently selling on eBay and I am very tempted to buy it ... as I really am intrigued by it. I am a novice to South American coins, so for all you experts out there ... please give me adv
I have threatened to do this.....
I've been writing this on and off for about a week. There is a force (not sure where it is coming from) that is pushing me to change my direction as far as coin collecting goes. It is a hard choice because I put so much effort into my proof collections and completed the collection from 1950-1964 with some very nice coins, most of which I sent in myself for grading. Along the way I met many passionate collectors that eventually became my friends. The age r
And I'm arranging a long-term relationship!
In my last post, I mentioned that I didn't find anything suitable for my Liberty Seated Half Dime registry set at the Baltimore show last month - at least not anything at a price I liked. But I did spot a lovely, lightly and attractively toned 1863-S, PCGS MS65 + CAC, offered by Gerry Fortin on behalf of a client of his. I examined it, liked it, took notes on it, asked for the asking price and noted that.
That night, I researched it a bit on-line
I came across an wanted to show you this 1952-S Jefferson w/steps.
There I go the bug is still alive in me and doing fine.I knew this 1952-S Jefferson was a semi-key,due to the fact thatmost were so weakly struck in the center explaining why fullstepsare so elusive and hard to find in the first place.Searching for any in MS66-FS,the premium would be extremely spendy. Ebay has two sellers wanting 6 to 8 K in MS66-FS. I am settling for this on it was alot easier on the pocketbook and it looks ju
The Mint in Chile misspells the name of their country on the 50P coin in 2008!
A very embarrassing mistake for the Mint in Chile indeed. For a small portion of 2008, the Chilean Mint accidently misspelled the name of their country on the 50 pesos coin. Rather than spelling C-H-I-L-E on the coin, they accidently wrote C-H-I-I-E. The CHIIE error coin is not necessarily rare, but it is almost impossible to acquire in a high grade (Mint State).
The head of the Mint was fired for the mistake.
Roosevelt Dimes In High Grade Full Torch Are Hard To Find.....
Hi Everyone, This is my first post so if I do something wrong, it is OK to shoot...
Today after a long hard struggle and many lost dimes from auctions I have bid on, I finally made it to #1 in the 1965 to Date Roosevelt Dime Series. It took 100 coins to get to the #1 spot and currently, there are 113 needed for a complete set. With that being said, this set is put together not with just the best coins out there but with the coins
Simply put the third party graders appear to have shot themselves in the foot.
When I first read this question I mused about it for a while and then moved on. But I could not get the premise presented by the question out of my mind. Then it hit me, welcome to the world of ancient coin collecting. I have been collecting coins since 1954/5 but in 2009 I made a total change in what I collected. I turned to ancient coin collecting and I totally enjoy it. One of the first things I learned is th
LAST WEEKS DREW GREAT DIALOGUE.
If you have a certified coin MS or PF70, and after some time it develops toning or hazing or spots. Is this coin still considered a 70, and should it or should it not receive the same value at a sale? I ask this because it has happened to me and probably most all of you too. So if it still should attain a 70 value, then should not a coin exhibiting small toning or hazing or spots, in otherwise perfect condition be graded a 70 also????
Thank you all. Believ
...Finally after more than 40 years, a youthful fascination becomes reality.
As long as I can remember, I have been interested in numismatics. Working odd jobs as a youth I recall spending a large portion of my paycheck on coins. Some of those coins I still own today. I also enjoyed reading about my hobby in Coins Magazine.
I loved that magazine and I couldnt wait until the next months edition arrived in the mail. I often read it from cover to cover. As a youth, I discovered that reading is
Rick, Brent, you are ineligible to guess.
This is a pic of a set that I just recently sent in for grading. It has been in my closet for about 3 1/2 yrs. Could it be a sister set?

This confirms -at least to me-
A few days ago, we had a discussion on one of my journals about the 2nd party grading of the CAC, PQ, MAC. Perhaps others to come, which seem to want a piece of the coin grading pie ($s)and not have to go through the processes of the NGCs and PCGSs.
I said before and I reiterate; We do not need high fives from anyone but the good guys! NGC and PCGS. Certainly not two or three or more of them.
I just went through a session with CAC and finally gave up. The
I do collect some Canada NGC sets.
I have TERRIBLE luck with NGC on my Canada nickels!
I reccomend you DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY TRYING to cross them.My coins were from 2 different groups.1. I purchased several ICCS coins. For most coins ICCS have the LOWEST grade numberings on regrades. On Non nickel coins they usually grade the same or higher on NGC regrades.2. For my nickels they usually graded 1 or 2 grades LOWER.3. I submitted 5 PCGS crossover Canada nickels. 4 of them FAILED to get the
CAC certified
Hi Everyone. Here are 2 new additions too my collection from Heritage Auctions from last week. The first is a NGC MS67* 1943 S Lincoln Wheat Ear small cent CAC certified and the second is a NGC MS67 1943 Lincoln Wheat Ear small cent CAC certified. The 1943 S I will send back into NGC in the future because of the scuffing on the holder. They both are really nice looking coins in hand. I hope you enjoy them both and as always, thanks for looking and Happy Collecting

I would like to start this set on the NGC Registry, but I am seeing the 2007 Mongolia coin typically selling for $1200 - $3000!!! Is this truly the price of this coin?
Does anyone have any experience with this set? It seems to be quite pricy! It may be worth it, if the price is stable or going up. $1200 - $3000 per coin? WOWOWOW

Part 1 of 2 of my goal
Like most of us collectors we start a collection only to find completing them to be the hardest achievement. I am down to one coin and have been searching and watching the internet to no avail. I have attended coins shows but since my search is for a modern coin the coin shows don't offer much in that area.
Anyone having the knowledge or whereabouts of the coin listed below I would greatly appreciate your letting me know.

A couple additions to my Varieties & Duplicates half dime set...
I spent some time, as usual at the Baltimore show, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. From my perspective, it was pretty normal for a March coin show in Baltimore.
On Thursday, I left work around 12:30 to go downtown to the show. I did my usual thing - quickly scanning dealer offerings, pausing if I see anything of potential interest (half dimes and large cents), and stopping to take a look at any that might fit in my collecti
1880 CC VAM-6 GSA Hoard
Going to be able to add to my Carson City Morgan Dollars, 1878-1893, GSA Holders Only Set.
Took a chance and bought in an online auction. Came in box which is in great shape and with certificate. Had to pay that dang BP. Oh well, I think it was worth it especially if coin comes back MS62 or better because it turns out be a be my first VAM. I hope I'm right.
Thanks to VAM World, I was able to identify each attribute of the VAM-6 including the 8 repunched ov
Sometimes a strong lighting angle can bring out a coin's best appearance.
The lamps that I use for my coin photographs are too bulky to allow placement near the camera lens so I have to experiment with different angles in relation to the plane of the coin's surface. I have a couple of small LEDs lamps on order that will allow me to get close to a perpendicular angle, but until they arrive I have to make due with what I have.
I've read advice that for coins with portraits, you should try t
