Dropping from 16 to 5 Coins

Trading quantity for quality! I'm consolidating collection from 16 lower-grade coins to 5 finer coins. Overall value of the collection will remain about the same. Even though I'm a minimalist, I still like quality. Had to try the lower grade stuff to see whether it would fit. It didn't fit me well. I will still be targeting only about 20 Types to keep the collection small and affordable. Here's another new acquisition. This new MS67 Morgan replaces an MS65 and a few other coins.

My Fun-Employment

How I've spent it. I am starting a new job next week and was lucky enough to be able to take two weeks off in between leaving the old job and starting the new one. My cousin coined this term as being "Fun-Employed". Sadly, it has not been 100% fun though, as I have injured 4 fingers during this time. 1. A nasty blister while helping my mom in her yard, 2. A leash burn courtesy of my dog as he needed to sniff a tree, 3. A gash on a finger while helping to build a play house for my niece

Buying and Selling Part 1

Not long ago I posted My Collector Profile and expressed my affinity towards type collecting. Subsequently, I reviewed my entire collection for coins I could sell, and with the proceeds I bought several coins that I am really excited about. As a part of that review, I looked to upgrade a few circulated gold coins to mint-state condition. The first was an Indian eagle from XF-40 to MS-63 and the other an Indian Head half-eagle from AU-55 to MS-62. Finally, I upgraded a type-2 gold dollar from A

$$$ 2014 Bullion Coin reaching insane prices $$$

Is this the next "1995W Eagle" kind of rarity? Prices for the 2014 Horse/Chinese Characters Double Privy Maple have been exploding. A cleaned/damaged version of this coin has sold for $800, and the set of four coins sells for $1600 on eBay. Wow! This coin was selling for $389 raw last year! An Opportunity I Couldn't Pass Up

My new half-cent is perhaps the most gorgeous half-cent I have run across. I wasnt looking to buy this 1835 Half-Cent piece, but I came across it searching e-bay listings and couldnt pass it up. Fortunately, the coin it replaces in my collection was targeted for an eventual upgrade. In the new piece I get exceptional color and a very strong strike. In other words this coin has exceptional eye appeal. It also fits my plans to add the best looking coins for the price I can afford into my 7070 Ty

The Future of Our Hobby

My niece and soon, my nephew I was reading an article in Coin World about how we need to constantly be thinking of ways to involve young people in the hobby, because they're the future of the hobby. My niece is 4 and my nephew will be coming along in a few weeks or so. I figured since I just started a type set for myself, so why not start one for my niece and one day my nephew. Right now, my niece knows what money is, but not really what it's for. She just takes it and puts it in her pigg

Either a Millionaire, Crazy or Both!

An uber rarity acquired!!! When I first started chasing Canadian commemorative coins in high grade, there were very few people competing in this space and the number of items the RCM produced every year was reasonable. That has all changed. In spite of the 100+ commemorative issues that the Frankling Mint, errm, sorry, the Royal Canadian Mint issues every year ... I find the Canada Privy Maples to be the most exciting and challenging. If you truly love the thrill of the hunt, this is the

Down to my last cent

1909-S VDB Down to my last cent It's taken me 4 years but I am finally down to my last cent. I haven't sprung for the 1909-S VDB but will soon do so. It is hunting at its best! You search and search for that perfect coin that meets your needs and your budget and when you see it you know it is the one. It's the Buck with the perfect rack.....the largemouth bass that is over 10 pounds....you know it when you see it and the elation, although short lived, is very satisfying when you finally

We need more Cow Bell !!! Open letter to Canadian Mint

RCM, where's the Cow Bell? I noticed the Canadian Mint has now issued coins with the characters from the Looney Tunes cartoons. Sufferin' Succotash! Have you gotten so desperate for designs you're now doing cartoon scenes? I haven't seen a coin for a Kitchen Sink yet? How about it? What about a Cow Bell coin? You could even put a teeny tiny working Cow Bell on it, make it a Hologram Colorized Gilt Ultra High Relief with a Murano Glass Cow Bell. Instead of your usual denominations of $1, $2, $3

Gardner Sale Reflections

1, 2, 3... More than a month has passed since part 3 of the Gardner collection sale. I have had time to reflect on the coins I got and the ones that got away. In the end, I bought six half dimes from that collection: one from Part 1, two from Part 2, and three from Part 3. Only one of them was a top choice at the time, from Part 1, the 1864, about which I wrote at the time. For Parts 2 and 3 I did my usual preparations. That results in a prioritization of coins to pursue and maximum potentia

1998 Triple Struck Counter Clashed Cent in NGC 64RD

Why is TRUST touching the 1 in the date (1998)?? Why does this only appear on the 2d strike and not the first? Why didn't NGC note this when they graded and slabbed the coin? This is my second journal entry about a 1998 TS Cent. The first was about my now mated pair of 1998 FS-901 proof Reverse error cents about 18 months ago. A different error story this time. One that occurs as I had some time to enjoy looking at coins this weekend. I was thinking about finding a mate to this Non-FS-901 r

Snow Day in June

Snow of the Indian head cent kind... ...Been meaning to check my 1862 1C with 45 Deg CW Rotated Die against Snow's latest Attribution Guide. I had seen that a S4 comes with a 30 Deg rotation--neat coin with misplaced 1s in the denticles to the right of the date. Oddly enough, you have to check the date position to ensure it's not a S11--the mint made two dies like this??!! And I added an 1887 S2 to my IHC set. I've been waiting on a nice variety to fill that slot. The 1862 is in an error

Bechtler Gold Coins Struck in Rutherford County North Carolina

Where have they all gone? I just got back from visiting my sister in upstate New York and drove through western North Carolina on the way home. Just north of Rutherfordton on route 221 I spotted a historical marker identifying the site of the Rutherford Mint which was operated by Christopher Bechtler and his son Augustus from 1931 until the late 1840s. There they struck $5.00 and $2.50 gold coins. In 1832, to accommodate the need for a smaller denomination they began striking $1.00 gold coins

2015(S) Struck at San Francisco American Silver Eagles?.

Are there any 2015(S) Struck at San Francisco American Silver Eagles graded? Are there any 2015(S) Struck at San Francisco American Silver Eagles graded? I'm just asking because there has been a slot for it all year, yet I have not came across one yet. If NGC is planning on grading any, when will be the release date? Type Sets

Disclaimer** Please take this post for the humor with which it was intended. I have come to the conclusion that Type Sets were created for collectors who suffer from PCD (Pretty Coin Disorder). I definitely suffer from it and recently started a Type Set Collection. My internal dialogue with Ebay goes something like this..... Me: Wow, that's a gorgeous coin... Ebay: Buy it. Me: I'm not collecting that series... Ebay: Buy it. Me: I couldn't afford to finish that set. A lot of

My Weekend With Coins

How are you spending your weekend, numismatically speaking? I was off this weekend, so after doing some errand running with my wife, I sat down to edit some photos of my recent acquisitions. I took the photos last week, but I haven't had a chance to edit until now. My realization is that as much as I love collecting coins, I'm not a big fan of editing those photos. The sad realization is that I have another stack of coins that needs to be photographed. Sigh... I just edited a couple of
