My Grade 70 Pop 1 Collection

100+ Pop 1 World coins in new Custom Set The Dan Hughes Grade 70 Pop 1 Collection I decided to create a Custom Set of Garde 70 Pop 1 coins in my collection after realizing I had over a hundred of them and thought it would be interesting set to look at. When I first started reviewing coins to see how many Pop 1 Grade 70 coins I had I expected to find maybe a dozen or so. I was very surprised to find over 100 and I am still adding to it. I thought someone might enjoying seeing some pics so I cre

In what universe is this coin NOT CLEANED?

Grading services, especially PCGS, seem to give a pass to high ticket or marque coins. I tried this once before but it got bogged down on the peripheral issue of the role of the auctions houses in this issue. It drives me crazy when I send in a perfectly good coin and get it back "code 92" or improperly cleaned or maybe that's code brown. Here is another shining example of a coin that is er... Proof-61? Or should it be Proof Unc details? The upper red arrow shows a protected where the ab

What do you think, Full Head?...

I found the 1916 in FH I had been waiting for. After a long wait I found a full head 1916 Liberty Standing Quarter with original surfaces and a great strike. What do you all think? The 1916 FH is always much softer than the 1917 FH. In my opinion the 1916 is not really a "type one" to be grouped with the 1917's. It has a completely different master hub. Look at the stars on the gateway or the letters on the obverse and on "United States of America" on the reverse. The stars have a softer

Shattered - Part 2

Icing at the end of a big day. Surprise, surprise, I participated in Heritage's fourth installment of their sale of the Gardner collection on Wednesday. I was fortunate to get four nice coins in the main afternoon session. I'll write more about those coins later. Wednesday evening saw an internet-only session of some of Gardner's lesser coins, many of which are quite nice. I had my eye on two of the half dimes: an 1843 V-4 with shattered reverse and an 1844 with repunched date. The latter so

England without a monarch!

A relic from the 'Interregnum' King Charles I lost more than the English Civil War. In 1649 he lost his head and England began a period of eleven years without a monarch. Even so, crowns were still minted. 1658 crown of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, a single year issue as he died that September. The crown is noted for its high strike quality due to the mechanized milling and press process introduced by Pierre Blondeau, former engineer o

Completely Modern

Out with the "old" and in with the "NEW" Friends, I have added so many different coins the past few years. I can tell that my interest in collecting has turned a page. I changed a few set names to add For Sale in the set listings. I have decided to rid of all coins dated pre 1965 (wheats and silvers). The sets that are starting to grow with each new addition lately have been the true moderns of today. With that being said I no longer add to wheats, silver dimes, silver quarters, or silve

New Libertad Variety?

There is a 1987 double die now there is a 1990 double die reverse. Ok, we its obvious I have a lot of 1oz libertads as well as some time on my hands. After going through about 140 libertads in the past few days this coin caught my attention. On the reverse you can see doubling on the letters as well as the wing, head of the eagle and snake. This will be going in for grading on my next submission with a new variety to be added to the series. To see old comments for this Journal entry, cli

1982 1oz BU Libertad Counterfeit

This is a one of a kind finding as it had me and others fooled. The 82 BU libertad i aquired has turned out to be more than just a proof like coin. After further study and research the coin may have been a specimen strike, not. When comparing it with other 1982 and early libertads it turns out there is nothing that is the same. Some of the differences on the obverse are the flow of the angles hair, her body, face, the dental work on the rim, the feathers, the font and the reverse is also ver

1st 1oz BU Libertad with a PL Designation

I acquired this coins as part of my set. This coin was purchased raw and i knew i had something special. I submitted it for grading along with a few other 1990 but because this was the first and only libertad to be given the PL designation, its now in my registery set. As the collector base keeps growing i think there could be more coins like this that appear. Over the past year of collecting about 1 thousand ounces of libertads this was also the first truely unique coin i have found. Right no

Very special 1982 BU libertad

Picked up a great find today. Before i talk about the coin, i want to mention something about the 1990 MS67 PL i have in the registry set. The 1990 proof like i have is the only proof like designation given to a BU libertad. I found the 1990 and knew it was special and had it graded along with a bunch of other coins. Now for the 1982. At first when the 1982 was for sale i was not interested as the orice was more than double what a typical 1982 1oz libertad goes for. After looking at for a f

Roman Numeral Gold Eagles are HOT

The Hunt For Gold October Today, the adult ice cream truck arrived. Very late too. Tomorrow I am heading to Chicago for a wedding, and was waiting with a dripping mouth for my 1990 $25 MS70. The truck was supposed to be here before 4:30 and by almost 6:40 it was still not here. So, on the way out of my neighborhood, there came the brown van, with a harried looking driver. I blinked my lights and waved frantically, as I knew the coin was on the truck. Well, he was in a big hurry and th

2000 1 OnZa BU MS70 pop 1

Yesterday i acquired the one and only 1 oz BU MS70 libertad for the year 2000. The 2000 BU 1 Onza MS70 is the only MS70 graded for that year. It was also the 3rd MS70 to be graded since the series started in 1982 and there wouldn't be another libertad graded MS70 for another 10 years until 2010 when 1 more hit the grade. By the beginning of 2011 there were only 4 1oz BU libertads that made the perfect grade of MS70 and only 7 more would attain perfection in 2011. In 2012 190 received the perfe

stepping up to #1

This was a day where i had some time to finish adding to the 1oz libertad set and in the end this is now the #1 registry set. Today i added the last of my coins i had and and now all slots are filled with the exceptio of the 2010. The coins i am focusing on are the 1982, 1986, 1987 DDO and 1995 as these are a little weak and are due for an upgrade. The difficult thing about upgrading these are most are already 1 or two grades from the top grade as it is. Although many of the coins in this set

would smell as sweet -- but a better photograph can't hurt! My original title for this post was 'Most Subtly Improved', a nod to Gary and Alan's recent posts about their photography, but I could't resist the Shakespearean jest. As my photography skills slowly progress I have greatly improved many of my early coin images but sometimes it's the ones with a subtle improvement that can really catch your attention. That's the case with my Pezza della Rosa or Rose Dollar and I hope you'll agree. Th

Exception Clauses in My Collection

There are those collectors who will under no circumstances have details graded coins, medals, and tokens in their collections. Then there are collectors like me who will make exceptions for them under certain conditions. About a year ago I wrote about replacing three details graded coins in my 7070 type set. I particularly remember how pleased I was with the replacements and finally having the entire set free of problem coins. Then when I purchased a Classic Head Large Cent earlier this year,

Numismatics Holiday! (Updated)

Ive been anticipating today for a few months! Today is the bi-annual Virginia Beach Coin Show presented by the Tidewater Coin Club at the Virginia Beach Covention Center. The show is always a quality event with local dealers and many others from DC, Maryland and North Carolina. I always manage to find something new or unique and I am hoping to add my 400th silver coin to my collection today with a couple acquisitions. Looking forward to good conversations about numismatics, perusing all the

4 REVERSE PROOF coins added the Presidential Dollars, 2007-Date, Proof set What a surprise I got when I returned home from a bone marrow transplant in NYC.. Spent 5 months away from home and my coins. I have been working on the Presidential Dollars, 2007-Date, Proof set. I had all except the year 2015. Went on Ebay and found them at a good price. When I finished entering them I noticed that there were 4 coins added to the set. REVERSE PROOF of Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and LBJ to my su

My original title was What Would You Grade This Coin?...

My original thesis was that Marquis coins get preferential treatment but I could not leave well enough alone... I am glad that we got the discussion that we got. 21 people felt it worth their time to write a response and over 200 views. The original Title was "Marquis coins get a pass from PCGS" Then I changed it to "Is this fair grading? See the grade PCGS gave and guess who submitted it." The point made by Mark on his posting was a good one. It did not escape my attention that the holde
