Coin photos

Trying to get good photos for my gallery. I have realized that while it seems easy in principle, it is actually rather difficult to get a nice photo of a coin. I have found that a black background works well and have tried several types of materials. Particularly difficult is the reflection issue while making a photo of a rather shiny silver coin. I have seen my fingers and ears as well as the reflection of the camera in the coins when I review the photo. I have already posted several ph

2015 NGC Registry Award Winner for Best Classic Set

Big Thank You to NGC On January 8th, the GrandView Double Eagle Collection was honored with a Best Classic Set award in the category "Liberty Head Double Eagles, 1850-1907, Circulation Issues". I was anticipating a Best in Category award, but never expected a Best Set award, since there are so many incredible sets in popular areas such as Lincoln Cents, Buffalo Nickels, Mercury Dimes, Morgan Dollars, etc. http://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/5057/NGC-registry-award-winners/ I would like to

Worth the Wait

Two and one half months after I made a commitment to buy an 1802 NGC XF-40 Large Cent, my wait has finally ended! Though I waited about two and a half months from the commitment to buy until delivery, this story really began at the ANA show in August. This is when I purchased a 1901 MS-63 gold eagle. You see, it was then that I asked the person I bought the eagle from to look out for a nice VF-XF Draped Bust Large Cent to complete my 7070 type set. Thereafter, I personally decided to put an en

NGC graded 1988 libertad Double Die

Just got the grade back from NGC and am a little disappointed. When submitting the 88 DD i was expecting an MS66 or MS67 but as you have it, it was graded only at MS64. I have submitted about 250 libertads to NGC and the lowest grade till now was only a few MS65's. I thought the coin was much nicer than an MS65 and was shocked to see MS64. Oh well, at least i can say its the first 1988 DD that NGC graded. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below

Thinking About Custom Sets And Photos

first few pics aren't bad Let's talk about the pictures first. Since I began my enforced layoff in May, 2013, I didn't shoot any coin pics. My DSLR is still firmly attached to my copy stand, so for the last couple of weeks, I began to reimage some of my coins. My 2 Southwest Expedition so-called dollars came out nice and I even got some credible images on my proof Bison Westward nickel. However, on the nickel I need to use some SlabRenew on the slabs as the scratches showed up really bad. Howe

Statehood Quarter Fun

The beginning of the Registry Set After a 13 year hiatus, I finally got back into the coin world, and in November 2015 I purchased 79 quarters from usstatequarters.com to fill the remaining holes I had in my Dansco 1999-2008 Statehood Quarter album. I was pretty happy going through the quarters as I placed them into the Dansco album after not having even opened it up in 13 years, and felt a sense of accomplishment getting all 100 P&D coins in there! Then, I remembered I had 2 quarters

Census Updated!

I'm so excited! As I'm making a decision as to whether wait and buy an NGC MS-67 1999-P 5c 6FS, or get an available MS-66, I just checked the Census and it was updated YESTERDAY! So, looks like there are more MS-67's available then I previously thought, and I may be waiting to find the right one. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. REGISTRY AWARDS / CUSTOM SET DOMINANCE

Congratulations to all who won a Registry Award for 2015!   While my passion for this hobby lies in the aspect of "the hunt", it is always nice to receive recognition. So I commend NGC for issuing it's yearly awards and recognizing the many collectors in our hobby! How they review so many sets is beyond me.As always it was exciting waiting for the awards to be announced and then a pleasure reviewing the many amazing winning sets afterwards. There are some passionate collectors out there and a

Second Chances

The two year wait for the coin that I won. In 2013, I told the story about the auction that I participated in where I saw the lot hammer at my pre-bid price. Later, I found out that a floor bidder had the lot reopened, but by then I had stopped watching the on-line feed so I didn't get the opportunity to counter-bid (I would had gone at least one increment higher). Now I can tell the rest of the story. That same coin came up for auction in the Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins, Part II.

1988 DDO, another picture

Here is another pic. Before i submitted this i took several pictures but I can only add 1 pic to the journal entry so here is another. This picture shows the bottom of the coin as well as the mint mark (Mo). Needless to say, the doubling is much more extensive than any other DDO coin i have seen. New Libertad Variety, 1988 DDO

New libertad variety discovered and authenticated by PCGS A fellow Libetad collector named Dan from Connecticut submitted 4 or 5 1988 DDO BU libertads to PCGS for grading and they all came back MS64, MS65 and 1 at MS66 DDO making this the latest variety for the libertad series. After speaking with him I went through all my 1988 libertads and found inhad one as well. Currently mine is with NGC for grading and this should be the 1st 1988 DDO to be graded by NGC. What makes this particular variet

Custom Sets Question

To go big or stay focused? Congratulations to all the registry participants and winners. Now that the 2015 awards have been decided we can take a peek at the judges' selections, and with 90,000 registry sets out there, I know I will be viewing most of these for the first time. Like many of you, I spent a good portion of 2015 creating, organizing and polishing my sets. I've become a big fan of custom sets and I added four last year. I especially like the control we have over the size of our s

Glad To Be Back

It's been 13 years since I've collected... I'm a 42-year-old Business Manager. I manage the rapid, sustainable and profitable growth of a fantastic local chiropractic Doctor. After 29 years in business, he wants it to truly grow and expand and I enjoy being a part of that success. The Doctor has expressed that when we open our next office, I'll become his partner. And we have plans of opening 3 more locations. *crossing my fingers*... I've been divorced for 13 years and have now resigned mys

Registry Awards

Double whammy. Hi friends. Earlier this evening I was taking care of some business on-line, and thought I'd check the Registry Awards before spending some time with my wife. I had won a couple awards several years ago, so I'm in the habit of checking to see each year. Having left my wife so she can get some rest (she's fighting a cold), I wanted to put some of my thoughts out here. First up: Thanks to the judges for recognizing what I do here. I really do appreciate it. I don't write journa

Great Deal!

With it being the holiday season I scaled back my coin purchases, but I just realized that I had earned some eBay Bucks over the past few months. So I got online and started to search the marketplace. I found a nice white 1901 MS 64 Morgan listed for only $75.88 and with my $19.14 in eBay Bucks I paid only $56.74 for a $125.00 Morgan....that is 55% off value! Pretty amazing deal and a nice addition to my collection. Happy collecting. http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSe

Bi-metal Coinage

But what about other specialty metals? You can purchase these three specialty metals, which are the only other metal coins you can buy from a government mint on this planet: tantalum, niobium and titanium... We have all seen gold, silver, platinum and palladium coins and bars. We have also seen the base metals: copper, zinc, tin, nickel, manganese, aluminum, magnesium and iron based government circulation coins. But what about other specialty metals? Anxiously Awaiting

I'm anxiously awaiting the results of the NGC Registry Awards! It's always fun to review all the amazing sets and admire the creativity of some. I review all the winners and appreciate the time, expense and effort put into each one. There's so many deserving and passionate collectors. I'm also hoping to see my set on the list! The Rush of Feeling Like a Kid Again

I filled a hole in my Lincoln Album! I hope every one had a great New Year's Day. It only comes once a year. Well, the parades are done and the bowl games are mostly over so it is time to get back in the saddle, sort of speak. If the last few days are any indication of how 2016 will turn out then I believe it will be an awesome year. I filled a hole in my Lincoln Cent album! Bear in mind, my set is missing the big boys of the Lincoln Cent collection, 1909-S, 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1922 (no D),

1916 Mint Set Finished!

1916 a great transitional year. I finally finished my 1916 mint set. It has two great 20th century Key date coins, the Liberty Standing Quarter and the Winged Liberty (Mercury) Dime. I have pictures for each of the coins. Although there was no ranking benefit to adding pictures, I personally enjoy looking at my fellow collectors' sets more when the included pictures of the coins. As the saying goes "A picture is worth 1000 words". I don't know if this link will work but I'll give it a tr

PCGS Makes Good On Their Mistake

Finally A Real Win With A Grading Service I sent an unlisted and very rare pattern in for grading to PCGS since I had a coupon for four free submissions. After several interactions online with their customer service people to correct errors that I saw on the PCGS website related to this coin, as well as providing them with a variety of information about the coin, since it is not listed in any major catalog, the coin was shipped back to me as "unable to authenticate". Now this coin is not a di

The end of 2015 as we know it

Getting ready for 2016 Friends, As for the usual every Jan. 1'st I do a order from Wizard Coin Supply to get more coin flips for submissions that are on the back burner. With each January poly-flip order I usually get a Intercept Shield coin album. This order today was 500 flips and a Franklin album. I probably have a dozen or so ungraded Franklins here and figured it would be a fun album to fill. Was looking for a Modern Commemorative album but they weren't available in Intercept Shield ye
