New addition to my #1 libertad registry set.

Just received my latest submission back from NGC. I was able to upgrade the 1995 MS68 to a MS69 on my #1 set and upgraded 4 coins on my #5 BU set. When i started putting together a BU libertad set i never thought it would be possible to hit the 13,000 point mark as the person holding the #1 slot had it for 5 years. As time goes on i will continue to look for coins to upgrade in the set as my goal is to have all coins in top known grades. As of now the set has 20 of the 35 coins in top grad

great deal Please check out my post in the money market place. Giving up coin collecting with a sad heart but I have other interests to pursue and I can no longer give my collection the time it needs. Trying to sell as a group at this time I will NOT entertain offers on single coins Thanks for your time W M Fielding To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. eBay Scam Alert

Yet another fraud on eBay Back in June I sold a rare coin to an overseas buyer. In itself, this should not present a problem ... as I have done this numerous times before. I was particularly fond of this coin, it was a pop2 tied for highest grade coin with me owning both examples. I decided to sell one, and herein lies our story. Problems Arise: 1. After buying the coin, my overseas buyer disappeared. I let this go on for 2 weeks, because I understand that desireable coins require a l

Update on my coworker

I've created a monster! As you all know, I have gotten one of my co-workers hooked on collecting. In a way,I have hurt myself. I was in the vault room and he comes back with a "cat that ate the canary" grin on his face and tells me to guess what he just found. It turns out to be a 1928 $2 bill. Needless to say, I was quite jealous. I got him back though. Our currency shipment came in a few hours later, full of bricks from the FED; aka fresh sequential bills.... I ended up going home wit

You two are probably the only ones who will get a rise from this. Cheers. A hard fought battle, was hoping for a little better of a grade on these two. But all things considered, the calling, the driving, the chasing, the waiting, the looking (repeat, repeat, repeat) ... I found two, and I know you guys will enjoy this. Have a great weekend! 1964 ¥1000 yen Olympic coin

Surprised! When my Japanese grandfather past away I was going to throw everything away when I found out he was a coin collector and had lots of old Japanese paper money and coins. And from other countries. So I decided to keep it and continue what he started. And. I remembere as a boy, my father also collected coins and stamps. That we used to do together. Shattered - Part 3

Not the Part 3 I expected. This is a tale of five 1843 V-4 shattered reverse half dimes. I was aware of three of them on the market recently, all graded MS 63. The first was on a dealer's website, the second was in the internet-only session after Part 4 of the Gardner Collection sale, and the third was in a separate Heritage internet-only session last Sunday. Part 2 was about that second, Gardner coin, which is now mine. I had intended to get the third one as well. It was especially good looki

Re: Question on Grading a Hawaiian Medal

Still waiting for a reply... To make a long story short: 1. On 09/06/15 I asked about the grading and encapsulation of a silver Hawaiian medal. Two gold version were encapsulated by NGC and can be seen at the Ira & Larry Goldberg Sept. 7, 2009 auction.   2. I provided supporting documentation from an ANA Periodical (June 1960) that the silver version and gold version were designed and manufactured by Precious Medals Hawaii (original designer amd manufacturer). 3. NGC Registry Changes for Double Eagle Series

Prooflike Coins Lose Respect with New Scoring System On Aug 19, 2015, there was a major change to the NGC Registry points awarded for $20 Liberty double eagles. This change had a dramatic effect on the relative rankings for some sets. Overall, the point values were increased for all dates, however, the point values for non-prooflike rare dates increased dramatically, eg, an 1886 $20 XF45 went from 5591 to 11970, and 1861-O $20 XF40 went from 2699 to 8686. However, rare double eagles with th

limited Libertad mintages, pros and cons.

The libertad is a beautiful bullion coin with pros and cons. Compared to most other larger bullion programs, the Mexico mint makes a ridiculously low mintage series year over year. When looking at the silver eagle, maple, panda and Australia programs that mint anywhere from 8 to 45 million coins each year, the libertad mintages are around the 1 million mark. Last year the libertad mintage was only 420k and there are 12 years years where the mintages were lower than 500k. When looking at their

One more pic of what may be a new DDO variety

If I knew how to upload more than 1 pic i would do it all in one post. Sorry for the multiple posts on this but here is another to show. Today the 6 coins I found with the same attributes and doubling in the same areas went off to NGC today. For the three pics I added in these three posts, all pictures show the same doubling. Your thoughts are appreciated. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Big Day Friday

Several coins will be home for awhile. I expect Friday to be a big coin day for me, or is that a little coin day? The coins, of course, are among the smallest the US produced - my beloved half dimes. I'll be skipping work once again to go to the Baltimore show. The day will start with the regular, and generally well attended, Liberty Seated Collectors Club meeting. After that, I'll be scouring the bourse. There is one coin I'm planning to buy from a dealer, unless it disappoints in hand. T

Well.....over a year later, I'm out of Registry retirement

An eventful year...but I guess I just couldn't stay away!! Hello everyone!! Last year in September, I announced my retirement from the Registry and I took down all of my sets to sort of do some soul searching, both in the numismatic frame of life and in everything else. It was an eventful year, and I accomplished a lot, including finishing my Master's degree and getting enrolled in a Doctoral program. I've been on since my retirement as a seller on the Money Marketplace and over time I ha

New Libertad Variety, DDO

Went through a roll i just received from Canada. After going through a roll of libertads, one coin caught my eye. The left hand appeared to have a shadow and after flipping it around I noticed doubling. The wing of the libertad also had doubling as well as all the written words on the obverse like Mo, 1 Onza and the mountains. I decided to look back at all of the libertads I had for the same year and found a total of 6 coins with the same exact attributes. These were not the 1987 DDO but from

Adventures of Ike Volume 2

More adventures of Ike! Well had a few good adventures this month. First we heading to the Chiricahua mountains in south east Arizona. We stayed in Rucker canyon. Very nice area with tons of wildlife. Saw deer, turkeys, snakes, lizards, skunks. The skunk was bad. It hit one of our friends dog. That was bad. Then we took our yearly trip to Annies orchard in Wilcoxs Az. Mostly known for their apple pies but they also have another large area of produce you can pick yourself and during this

LATEST REVERSE PROOF DOLLAR SET ON EBAY

Is this really a Johnson worthy of a perfect score 301783880953 ebay item number So I just have to wonder if this is really a 70 set... would it be more like a 68 or 69 at best? If so, I wonder if the price for this set will reflect the reputation this service has for over grading... thought I would post this up in case you might like to watch what it goes for regardless... the NGC and PCGS sets shouldn't be far behind... right? A Herd of Elephants at the RNA

My display at our club's annual coins show. I entered a display for our club's annual coins show this past weekend. The club is certainly one of the more famous coin clubs in America. It is the Rochester Numismatic Association, aka RNA. John J. Pittman is a former member, and I was fortunate enough to meet him shortly before his death, and get to know his wife and daughter soon after his death. The coins that I displayed were 17 Belgian Congo coins that depicted elephants on them, includi

1859 O Seated Liberty Dollar

Now when I look at my coins, I not only imagine what life was like when that coin, an 1859 O Seated Liberty Dollar for example, was struck, but also what this Dollar would have meant if my grandparents came across one. One interesting aspect of coin collecting for me is it allows me to consider what life was like at different point in the past and what it will be like in the future. Like many, my interest in collecting coins began when a relative introduced the hobby while I was young. My gran
