LIBERTAD grades posted by NGC

Sent in 50 coins and had a few nights email surprises. The first coin I had to check for was a 1990 to see if I was given a PL designation. Sure enough it came back as a 1990 PL67 making it the very first and only proof like designation given to a BU libertad. Next exciting coin was the 87 double die, this came back as a MS67, only one graded higher. A few coins to note, one 1992 came back as a MS69, a 1984, 88, came back MS67. A 1997 achieved a MS69. One worth mentioning is the 82 with a

Will there be a 2016 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set with three or four.

I have been collecting the Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set since 2007. This year's 2015 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set of four coins included Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson dollar coins in proof finish. Will there be a 2016 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set? With President Nixon, Ford and Reagan.( just looked at my set and the 2016 only has Nixon and Ford Reagan is missing.) Hopefully Carter will survive his cancer. And the 2016 will only have two. Wha

Coins from a Dream Trip

One item checked off the bucket list... My wife has long dreamed about going to Bora Bora. A month ago we were finally able to get there. We spent four days there, and seven on Moorea, which is right next to Tahiti. Both are really beautiful. Aside from the hikes and sight-seeing, one of my goals was to get nice examples of the local money... I wasn't the only one. While waiting at the Tahiti airport, near the currency exchange, I overheard a woman asking for shiny coins! I had ordered s

My Three Suns

A glorious light shines on former Spanish colonies. Three of my favorite 8 reales are from the former colonies of the Spanish Empire in the New World. The hopeful aspirations of these newly independent nations are reflected in the beautiful sunface designs of the Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata, Republica del Centro de America and Republica Sud Peruana. The birth of new nations is a politically contentious process -- these republics had to deal with years of internal and external strife

Quest To Be The Best

My set The Global Silver Coin Collection is approaching the 400 coin mark (393) with many new additions and it has reached a couple milestones recently: it reached over 5,000 views and entered its third year of existence. I have also expanded on the sets information (which won most informative set last year) concerning silver in modern times.   Currently within this custom set there are now 9 #1 competitive registry sets and many more top tier competitive registry sets. A main focus of mine re

Fantastically Rare Belgian Congo Essai

Very Rare, shiny, and new to me! My newest Belgian Congo rarity. 1920 Albert I of Belgium nickel Specimen Essai Franc SP66 PCGS, Dupriez 182.   This enchanting coin depicts the laureate head of Albert I of Belgium with ESSAI stamped to the right of the palm tree motif. Virtually unseen in the marketplace, this rare issue presents attractive features and lustrous surfaces, highly-coveted as such. This piece, very similar to the piece that was sold in the Spink & Son 12/17/14 auction.

A few thoughts

An observation, some additions and a rant. An update on my coworker. I caught him picking through the quarters in his drawer during downtime. He is working on the album I got him. I think he's hooked. I told him to let me know when he found a Wisconsin Quarter and I explained the extra leaf varieties to him. I also told him about the Hawaii overprint notes. We got paid early this pay period, so I got to place my coin orders early. I picked up a couple of PF commemorative coins, a few Jeffe

How often should NGC update their grading census?

I've been curiously watching the population report for the 2015 reverse proof Eisenhower. However 7 weeks since the release and still no results Ok so we know there are only 17000 coins released and I know that the population report on the grading results for this coin will significantly impact the value of these coins. Am I alone in watching this one? Does anyone feel the grading results should be updated at least on a monthly basis? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click he

What would grade you give this coin? PCGS ...

ridiculous variations in grading standards depending on the coin and who submitted it. PCGS is like a politician, you get the grade you pay for. I first recognize that something was not kosher about 6 years ago when I bid on and won a 1934--S Peace Dollar in a PCGS AU-58 holder from Heritage. The photographs were washed out and that when I got the coin in hand... WOW talk about ugly. At best, the coin should have graded XF-45. I concluded; Marquis coins submitted by auction houses get up

Trade ins make great upgrades

Presto Change-O Traded away my 1990 $50 GAE for a 1989 G$25 and I got $1900 to boot. I feel I got the better end of the stick as I had no place for my 1990 $50, and the 1989 was looking good in the auctions and price guide. I need some trading material so I actually just traded up again. I have been trading up now for over a year, and with very careful trading I have built to my current collection. My number of coins owned have dropped precipitously from over 600 coins to now only about

US Silver Dollar Mint Type Set

I don't collect many US coins but they fit nicely into a mint type set. In a rare case of planning ahead with my coin acquisition strategy, I picked my US silver dollar types so that they each came from a separate mint. The set is now complete and I've created a custom set in the Thematic & Topical Coins section to show them off. coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=19490 Here's a photo teaser. ~jack To see old comments for this Journal entry, click her

A Roosevelt Weekend Treat

CANDY-TIME!! Friends, This week I was talking to David Sachs about modern toned coins that are available. He is working on a very nice toned 20th Century type set. Even though he already has his Roosevelt dimes I told him I had some great candy dimes for a later submission. Of course by yesterday he was curious to see them. Not worrying on focus I took a dozen or so pics this morning and sent them to him. I did a small collage treat for your viewing as well this weekend. Have a great w

Back from the depths of obscurity-SS Republic

Kind of like my collection Hi Everyone. It has been several months since my last post announcing the sale of my Lincoln cent collections. I have been enjoying the property I bought in north Florida with the proceeds of that sale. Whitetail deer, eastern turkeys, Florida black bears and monster hogs aplenty. Although I sold the majority of my coin collections, I have always been a collector of some sorts since I was a child. Recently I received a package out of the blue from one of the maj

First Coin Gold Fever: My Start in Coin Collecting (June 28, 2013)

I really knew nothing whatsoever about numismatics when I bought this coin. Part of the deal was a free copy of the 2013 Red Book… I knew it was gold, and I thought the PCGS holder it came in was meant to keep it secure, and to assure me that it was genuine. When received, the holder couldn't be opened, which surprised me, and the holder had wear on the backside that obscured the coin a little.  Through a jeweler's loupe, a fiber could be seen on the reverse side of the coin, yet ano

Work

Luring in a coworker I think I have brought a coworker over to the Numismatic Side. (I feel like the Emperor from Star Wars. ) He is from Azerbaijan in eastern Europe and today he was looking at the quarters in his drawer and asked me why they all looked different. Two hours later (No lie) after having talked about the State Quarter program, Augustus St Gaudens, the 1933 Gold Double Eagle, all the mints past and present, (I'm really not kidding. ) he asked if it was expensive to start a

Reverse Proofs in Presidential sets?

After 36 coins the Mint does this Reverse proofs do not belong in the Presidential Dollar Proof Set. They are a variety, and should have their own category. Trying to get a set now will be next to impossible. Collecting is supposed to be fun and relaxing, not cost prohibitive. I can see the Sacagawea set getting the same treatment after all these years. The Silver Eagle sets needed milleneum coons and others, now they are gone. Please take reverse proof and make them another category. To see

Four years is a long time

Back in the coin collecting game Four years. In that time I could have completed one term as president. Earned another bachelor's degree. Or served a prison sentence for a serious felony. Alas, that's also how long I've been out of the coin collecting game. And the last time I submitted a journal entry. For the good readers of the numismatic community, sadly my story isn't unlike a lot of stories nowadays. In 2011 I went through a devastating divorce, and sold off what was the beginning
