My Quest To Be Best Overall

Numismatics has really become a passion for me in the last 4 years and I found that with so many coins available you have to focus on one type of coin. For me it is silver, silver coinage from all over the globe!   Last year it was an honor and very exciting for me to win the NGC Registry Award for Most Informative Custom Set for my set THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION. After receiving the recognition in the registry, the badge for my set and the plaque in the mail I told myself I wanted more

Still alive

In case anyone still remembers... Found myself thinking of this place again recently. I defended my PhD a little under a month ago and passed by unanimous vote of my committee. I've been working on getting all my paperwork turned in and getting all of my approvals but everything should be go for graduating in August 2015 and becoming Dr. Pittman. Today marks 1 year since I met a wonderful young lady who I see myself staying with. It'll be one year since our first date in about a week. In t

My Collector Profile

The definition of profile is to describe, write about, give an account of, portray, depict, sketch, and outline. That said, could someone easily write about, give an account of, portray, depict, sketch, or outline my collector profile by the coins currently in my collection? This is exactly the question I am asking of myself as I examine the state of my collection. More specifically, which coins in my collection represent my core passion as opposed to those I bought on a whim? If I were to be

How to value

A coin with extremely low mintage... ...with 8-15 total surviving at both TPG's. Zero previous auction records from two major auction houses to help with the history of prices and an idea of supply and demand how does one value a coin? I purposely left some or most info vague as I'm looking at two coins in this category and I'm hoping for a more generic answer or advice than about a specific coin, nor do I need any more bidders. I only collect American, 19th century gold and silver. Several

Coin #500

Halfway to my bucket list goal. I recently looked at the overall standing of my collection and realized that I was sitting at 497 coins. I was curious as to what my 500th coin would be. The next day, two coins came in to put me up to 499. The day after, two more coins came in. The package I opened first was my 2014 Kennedy Reverse Proof Half Dollar. It is my first reverse proof and I really like the technique. I decided to create a bucket list after watching the movie. I included 100 i

NGC makes #2 sets so others can get on top?

I had the best set for years NGC plays with sets to get others on top. All of a sudden a set or two is missing a description. I lost my complete #1 New Zealand set for the same reason. Politics in numismatics. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

1960 Uncirculated Mint Set

1960 TYPE B REV 25C I just received a 1960 mint set I purchased on Ebay. I always inspect the coins to evaluate the conditions of the coins to see if any are worthy to send in for grading. Something told me to see if there is any Varieties. Sure enough clear as day the "P" quarter has the 1960 TYPE B REV variety. This is my first variety find. The quarter is possibly MS66. So now I need some advice what you would do. Should I leave the mint set as is or break the quarter out to grad

Dream Collection

If it was within your means, what would you collect and why? For me, it would be St. Gaudens $20 gold pieces. My high school was named after Theodore Roosevelt and I have enjoyed reading about the relationship between President Roosevelt and Augustus St. Gaudens and how the two of them redeigned our coinage. In addition, how St. Gaudens indirectly affected our coinage through his students; Weinman (Walking Liberty, Mercury), Fraser (Buffalo Nickel) and others. I also love the design and the

Image Request by Smithsonian

Help requested... Aloha, I have a very busy blog website (TheHawaiianaNumismatist.com) and get many requests relating to Hawaii coins, medals, and tokens. I am tracking down a NGC point of contact for high resolution images for the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indians. (They have periodically held Hawaiian events and displayed Hawaiian culture items). They are seeking specific images of Kingdom of Hawaii coins. Contact me ASAP with NGC point of contact so that I can forwar

Happy To Be Back

A lot has happened in the last 2 years. For those of you who don't know me, or haven't been keeping up with my previous journals, I took a 2 year hiatus, (or sabbatical, or vacation or whatever you want to call it). Well, a little over 2 months ago I was able to renew my account. Since that time, I have been really going through my coins and currency, trying to really get a game plan on my collecting journey. One of my big problems before, and something I still have to watch out for, is I've

Commemorative Conundrum....

Inflated Prices on Ebay Good morning, everyone. I am down to the last two coins in my Modern Commemorative Half set. They are two of the 1996 Olympics coins. I have been looking at them for quite some time and the prices are very inflated for some reason. They are consistently listed in the $150 ranges, but NGC's price guide only has them listed around $80 - $90. My dilema is whether or not to just suck it up and buy them to complete the set, try to buy them raw and hope for a 69 grade

2015 Business Strike Submittal Results

The 2015 Roosevelt MS69 FT dime was a real surprise so was the 2015 Bombay MS67 PL quarter.Over all, not too bad. My real desire is with the Presidential Dollars. The series is about to come to a close too. Only one MS68 dollar of the ones I submitted. I had bought 55 Mint sets and did not find many at all to send it.The 2015 Roosevelt MS69 FT dime was a real surprise sowas the 2015 Bombay MS67 PL quarter. This is my first PL quarter too. Franklin Halves

Got it cheaper then asking price Hello collector This week I picked up 2 proof Franklins a 58 in 65* from an online coin shop that I been doing some business with over the last year or so. I talk to them on the phone yes still uses the phone for my orders they do a good job with the customer but that what I think anyway. the 2nd was a 59 in 67 and it was a small shop I have stopped at before it on the way when I run down and see my mother. anyway he was asking a lot more then I wanted to p

Right place, Right time

1934,1938S,1947 Lincoln cents I guess it pays to be at the Right place at the Right time. I picked up three new Lincoln cents to add to my collection from eBay.They are and 1934 MS67RD, a 1938S NGC MS67 RD, and a 1947 NGC MS67 RD, for a price of $204.90. NGC has a price value of $890.00 for these three coins. Not a bad return for spending a few hours searching through all the graded coins available. Next one I'm thinking about is a 1949D NGC MS 67RD. Have to give that one some serious thoug

Disturbing Discovery

This one gives other coin dealers a bad rap in my opinion. I have recently discovered a dealer on Ebay that goes by two different names. He use to go by what looked very similar to a name of Gotcha. Most dealers will put forth the effort and send in raw coins for grading then sell them on Ebay. This one does the vulture method and buys up newly graded coins from other dealers on Ebay that no one bids on. Basically taking graded coins away from real collectors. Anyways.... the more recent t

What makes it rare?

Just a bit a ramble on a topic that bugs me. I have always been intrigued by the entries in price guides where instead of a dollar value it just says "RARE". As a child when flipping through my copy of "A Guide Book of United States Coins" I would see that and think, maybe one of these will show up in change or maybe I will find one at the coin shop in the 25 cent each bin. Of course as I got older reality set in. Now I just hope to able to say I saw one in a museum or a colleague's collection

Eric P. Newman Collection

Could you bear to see your collection be sold off? I think it's an interesting question. When the collection started being sold off, I was surprised that Mr. Newman was still alive. I have put a lot of time, effort and years into my collection and I honestly don't think I could bear to see it sold off. I think it would be like seeing a child leave you. When I pass, if I don't have kids that want to continue the collection, I have left my wife instructions on how and where to sell it off a

WHAT TO DO?

I AM BESIDE MYSELF. I sent some coins in to be conserved and graded, and of course no one is ever happy. But I believe that one was damaged while in others hands. It came back as a PF68. Now no one ever sends in coins that they feel will not get a PF70 when you are dealing with modern day commemoratives. Because of the expense of acquiring the coins then 30 plus each for grading etc. One looks them over very skeptically before sending them in to be assured as best as they can they get the

Sample Slabs and the History of Slabs.

An interesting history of slabbed coins & sample slabs. In the new (May 2015) issue of The Numismatist, author David Schwager has written an interesting mini-history of slabs, particularly "Sample Slabs," which are becoming a collectible in their own. Schwager's article is very informative, not to mention interesting, and well worth reading. He also provides two interesting websites, sampleslabs.com, and samplecoinslabs.com, which provide a wealth of information. One website (sampleslabs.c

When 100% isn't enough

Trying to Complete My ultimate goal is to have one each of the highest graded NGC coins for the year 2006. Although I have achieved the number 1 ranking with 100 % completion in all eleven (11) of the competitive categories I am still eight (8) coins away from my ultimate goal. This goal is also listed in my custom set (known as "2006 Completist of Postmodern U.S. Coins"). The custom set includes additional coins that aren't included in the competitive area of the registry. 70 Countries!

I was really excited to add coins from two different countries to my collection this week! My custom set THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION now contains 339 silver coins from 70 different countries! Its becoming more and more difficult to find coins from new countries, so whenever I am able to add a new country to my collection its rather exciting for me. I hope everyone is enjoying and having as much fun with the hobby as I am! Please give my set a view: http://coins.www.collectors-socie
