A Couple of Freebies

With all my recent coin purchases, I had racked up quite a few E-Bay Bucks. Thus, I was able to upgrade two coins in my 7070 type set based solely on E-Bay Bucks. With the remaining balance I bought a Conder Token for my seated-imagery custom set at a 32% discount. The first upgrade is of a 2007-D, First Day of Issue, Washington Presidential Dollar grading Brilliant Uncirculated by NGC. I got this dollar as a gift when I first signed up for NGCs Collectors Society back in 2008. However, from t

Superb finding!

Feels like winning the lottery! Today was one of those days when one just finds a coin of a lifetime, in no other place than eBay. This is the crown jewel of the medals coined in Central America (back then part of the Mexican Empire) to commemorate the coronation of Emperor Agustin. According to Carlos Jara (Mexican Coin Company Newsletter September/October 2014): "On October 31, (1822), the mayor of Guatemala City indicated that the amount of coins (medals) to be minted for that purpose (proc

Twin Leaf Shutout

But I did cherrypick a half dime... Yes, there was another Baltimore coin show, Thursday through Sunday... Although I "completed" my sets of middle and late date large cents some time ago, I did have my eyes on several potential upgrades in the Thursday evening auction session for the Twin Leaf Collection, a nice collection of over 700 lots of middle and late date varieties. It wasn't as nice or complete as the Naftzger or Holmes collections, but still pretty good, with some top notch exampl

Completed Goal of Proof Run in NGC Multi-Holders 1954-1964

My run is done.. A few days ago I finally found the 1962 Proof set in the NGC Multi-Coin holder. This completed a run of 11 consecutive proof sets in the NGC multi-holder format from 1954-1964. The "hunt" took 22 months beginning with the first set purchase (the 1964) in Sept of 2013. Completing this set was a good side adventure for me, and filled a gap in my collection, as basically these are the only certified Lincolns (both Wheat and Memorial), Jeffersons, Roosevelts, Franklins and Kenne

I reached a long awaited milestone

I have always had my eye on reaching 1 million points but never really thought I would get there. I have a strong predilection for New Orleans coinage. So it seems fitting that the coin the put me over 1 million point mark was a New Orleans issue. I have been looking for this coin in and circulated condition for the past 8-10 years. After careful analysis of auction records there are probably less than 20 truly Mint State examples in the market. Many have come to the auction block multiple

March of Dimes

New coins for my collection. Hello everybody, Just like to share a couple coins that I recently added to my modern commemorative collection. They are the MS and Proof March of Dimes Silver $1. The Mint did a nice job in choosing the design for these coins. I especially like the reverse depicting the infant in hand. Nice job! I also would like to thank NGC for doing a good job with the specialty label available for the 3 coin set. Enjoy those coins Jeffrey To see old comments for

Brand New Set

For a Brand New Nephew I just found out that my first nephew was born about an hour ago, so I started a new set called Texan's Nephew's Type Set. I just purchased the first coin for it; a coin type that I think most people started out with: a Lincoln Cent. A 2015 PF69 Ultra Cameo to be exact. I will get to meet him tomorrow. Happy collecting, everyone! Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Buying and Selling Part 2

In my last post, Buying and Selling Part 1, I described how I sold circulated gold coins to acquire mint-state gold coins. In this post I will talk more about the proceeds from the other sales to finance two upgrades and a new purchase. First the upgrades, and I'm not talking one or two grade points higher, but coins that are priced approximately six times higher than the coins they are replacing. The first coin is a PR-66 Three Cent Nickel replacing a common date MS-62. The other coin of whic

BullionDirect.com Closed For Business

Another dealer takes it on the chin. The Tulving and Kitco bankruptcies were two big ones, after the price of precious metals plummetted. Now BullionDirect.com has shut down as well. Apparently, JM Bullion has also stopped taking orders while they move to a warehouse in Las Vegas. When these dealers shut down, what happens to the customers who have orders with them? Apparently, Apmex has stopped buying gold and silver bullion for now as well. Although, I'd imagine that they are still

Shot-Down Spy Plane Results in the Forced Destruction of Gold & Silver U.S. Mint Medals

Want to learn more? Yesterday, the American Numismatic Association confirmed that my submitted Money Talk topic was accepted for presentation at the upcoming ANA 2015 World's Fair of Money in Chicago! I'll be showing images of the gold & silver U.S. Mint medals that were forced to be destroyed (part of the U.S. Mint's "non-disclosure" series of medals). The main focus of my presentation is to present information about the U.S. Mint's "non-disclosure" series of medals. This U.S. Min

I Finally Did It!

My Commemorative Half Dollar set will soon be complete. I received my last paycheck from my job today. (I start at a new place on Monday) This check included all of my unused vacation time, so I figured now was the time to pull the trigger on the last two coins I needed for this set: 1996 MS Olympic Swimming and 1996 PF Olympic Soccer. These two coins have been a real thorn in my side, as I have always found them way over priced. I decided to break down and add PCGS graded coins to my sea

New pics for my registry coins

Just added new pics to my Lincoln sets and a couple that are not yet availible to view. In keeping with my desire to have nice high quality pics of my registry coins thru 1958, I sent another group of coins to Mark Goodman as his pics are wonderfull. As usual he did a fantastic job so now I have high quality pics of all but a few coins thru 1937. Most of these new pics are of the coins in the mid 30s thru 1937 and are your basic red coins, but if you decide to browse these new ones I espe

Sold My Entire Collection too Pursue a Dream

Yes, $2.00 in Lincoln cents made it happen Hi Everyone. Well, this may come as a shock to a lot of people but this past week I sold off my entire Lincoln cent collection too pursue a dream. $2.00 worth of Lincoln cents is basically what my collection consisted of. The MS66RB 1955 DDO was just one of the many highlights that use to be mine. I also had all the modern major doubled die obverse and reverse Lincoln cents in top grade. i had been wanting a piece of land for most of my life where

American Liberty 2015 High Relief Gold Coin

I received an email from the U.S. Mint yesterday announcing that their 2015 High Relief 24K Gold Coin will be available for sale on July 30, 2015, at 12 noon (ET). From the description and pictures posted by the mint it looks like this coin will be quite attractive. I wonder if NGC will design a special label for this coin and/or offer a distinctive pedigree for specimens submitted for grading at the ANA World's Fair of Money.
