Golden oldies, arrived today.

Well, maybe not so old, but certainly gold. Today two boxes of stuff arrived and I am just now opening it. I can only put one picture in here (because I do not know how to add in several) and I'm like a kid at Christmas. Here is the Low Down: 44 coins in, 24 coins out, and a bunch of bank wires. Had to stash all the stuff at banks in the Carolinas and Texas until I got home. A 4 coin set of Edmund C Moy 38th Director of the U.S. Mint 2002 W PR70DCAM Gold Eagles, (4 coins), PCGS. Two

Crossover Score

Crossover from PCGS OGH to NGC Just received back a small hoard of PCGS OGH Franklin Halves crossed over to NGC recently that I had dropped off at the Summer FUN show. It came back with mixed results but a few surprises, including an upgrade shown here. While I would prefer a white coin, this one shows mint set toning which some people love and others....not so much. Happy collecting! Charleston SC show this weekend, Blue Ridge show next! Thoughts and notes on building a liberty half eagle set

$5, gold, liberty, half eagle I am just now venturing into the journals function here at NGC so if I make a wrong turn somewhere, please point it out. The reason for my jornal is to share my collecting experiences with others who might have a deep appreciation for a very interesting series. Liberty half eagles were minted from 1839 through half of 1908, making it the longest running major series produced, and were the *only* U.S. series to be manufactured at all 7 mints: Charlotte, Carson

Additions and Pics

It's a task just keeping up Friends, I added 50 new Lincolns to the set this week. Purchasing the complete set of Lincolns from vumc409 left me with plenty of extras. All pics were added and it seems I am missing other pics in other sets. I will take the time this weekend to get those pics caught up as well. I like to have pics for everything on the registry page but sometimes lack the time it takes to follow up. Enjoy the Lincoln slide show, Rick To see old comments for this Journ

America The Beautiful Quarters

Hit or Miss? I was at work yesterday breaking down a box of quarters. I always like to look at which coins are at the ends of the rolls, really identifying with the State Quarters, because the Florida quarter is what got me started in coin collecting. As I looked at them, I realized how many of the ATB designs I didn't recognize and couldn't match to the state by the design. For me, that is really MY problem with the series. There is not a cohesive element to it. When it came out, I thou

While Wife in Hospital, I got triplets

A NICE SET OF LINCOLNS While my lovely wife Helen was suffering in the ICU for 7 days, I had to commute from my sons home in Lake Royal to Tarboro. N.C. one of the days I spotted an ad for a coin show along route 64. Having a few minutes before expected closing of the show I zipped off the next exit and hit the windows phone looking for COIN SHOWS NEAR ME. Well, Lo, I got one. I made a call suggested by the phone and got a local dealer who was at a show in Washington DC. which was not f

SECOND TRIP AROUND THE SOUTH YIELDS TROUBLE

WHERE oh where can the Bechtler mint golds be? I set out two Fridays ago, on a hunt for Bechtler mint gold coins and the first week went okay, found a beautiful silver eagle. 2003 W PR70 DCAM. Nothing else when, on the way to Mount Airy, (Mayberry RFD) at my sons home two Fridays ago, my lovely wife Helen began complaining pretty heavy of a stomach ache. Saying it was not the usual pains, we stopped at a clinic and the doctor sent her away with pain and antibiotic prescriptions. I did

What does COINWeek, The E-Sylum..., and the ANA have in common this week?

Newly documented Presidential Award medals ... Seems interest has been sparked with the release of my latest book: Authoritative Numismatic Reference: Presidential Medal of Appreciation Award Medals 1958-1963, ISBN 1511786744. Even the American Numismatic Association Facebook page has posted a link to the COINWeek write-up.... To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

ironic

David Langes Numismatist article on 1934 D coins? When I read David Langes article in the Numismatist, the blood drained from my body. I had been trying to find a particular 34D coin for over 7 years, and now I knew, everyone would be looking for the same coin, causing it to be even more difficult to locate and probably more expensive. Irony of ironies, I took an expensive chance on an eBay coin, that I couldn't discern the Mint mark on and miracle; it was the coin that after 7 years of search

Shattered

I don't think Mick was singing about this. A friend responded by PM to my previous post, and mentioned that he had recently purchased a different 1838 half dime, with its own interesting character, from Gerry Fortin. That served as a nudge for me to check Gerry's site again. Now the latest issue of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club's "Gobrecht Journal" has an article by half dime specialist Steve Crain on 1847 shattered reverse half dimes. When I read that, I thought I would really like to

The importance for legal identification of your collection

How to identify your collection in case of a robbery. It was just by habit that I register all of my major coins or collections as soon as I receive them in the mail. Example I just received my 2015 proof 70 ER $50 gold buffalo in the mail and I immediately registered it with NGC and took the picture. Three days on June 30 I was rushed to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond for compound fracture of T 12 and L2. I was placed in intensive care unit for 10 days and then Neurosurgery

Eisenhower Class 2 Presidential Award Medals

Numismatic research sharing time.... My book launch was a few days ago. Image is of the eight Eisenhower Class 2 award medals (I established 5 Classes in my book). By far the Class 2 medals are my favorite as they are the same size, composition, and weight as a U.S. Morgan silver dollar. These medals were struck by the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. NGC previously graded and encapsulated my DDE-C2-07 (1960 Eisenhower State of Hawai'i Visit Award Medal). Let me remind you that these are not co

Easy Question FOR ALL!! What do you think is the hardest US MODERN series set to build?

I have been building them for 7 years or so. Friends, Just a thought as I plunder through my recent purchases. I wondered if others had the same complications finding the greatest coins available out there. I know we all look in different areas trying to do our best at obtaining the greatest coin we can find for sale --- of course at a SWEET price. I had no problems with the nickels and dimes as I may have been HOOKED up. On the other end I found it hard on Lincolns and dollars. Seems whe

Missing coins

Taps Hi, on one of my competitive set's there are some coins missing. I wrote ask NGC about this error to see if they could correct this error to the correct number of coins. The answer I received was thanks for bringing this error to our attention, I am working on getting this corrected. It's been about two weeks and still not corrected. For a second time I ask NGC to correct this error, but I did not receive a answer this time. The error is still a error. I guess this error will never be

200 #1 Registry Sets, #10 Overall Points, time to retire

Finally hit my 200th #1 Registry Set Years ago I had set a goal to reach 250 #1 Registry Sets and get in the top ten for overall points. I dropped that 250 down to 200 when the Royal Canadian Mint, whose coins make up a large portion of my collection, started spewing out a vast number of coins the last couple of years making it impossible, unless you're a millionaire with money to burn, to keep up with all of the new coins. I really focused on the sets this last year and a half to finish my go

now on the look out for 2014 World Series Champs label. Towards the end of last year when NGC announced that the HOF coins would get labels with MLB team logos, I was quite happy to say the least. I finally got around to getting one with my SF Giants label the other day and I am very happy to have it in hand! Now I am on the hunt for the Giants World Series Champ label that NGC released after the WS. I found some with the SAEs but the HOF coin is the only way to go for me. When I find one I

The King of All Kings - My Stolen Prize: Solving the Case and How NGC Unknowingly Helped

The "King of All Kings" I called it in my two year search to obtain and afford one. An NGC PF-63 "1903 US-PHIL Peso Proof" stolen from my mailbox. A month of excessive work on my behalf with the addition of a police investigation was soon to follow... An NGC PF-63 "1903 US-PHIL Peso Proof" was originally stolen from my mailbox on 9/25/14, just three days after my birthday which I had finally obtained as a gift to myself and as the most difficult piece to-date in my US-PHIL collection.
