First Coin Gold Fever: My Start in Coin Collecting (June 28, 2013)

I really knew nothing whatsoever about numismatics when I bought this coin. Part of the deal was a free copy of the 2013 Red Book… I knew it was gold, and I thought the PCGS holder it came in was meant to keep it secure, and to assure me that it was genuine. When received, the holder couldn't be opened, which surprised me, and the holder had wear on the backside that obscured the coin a little.  Through a jeweler's loupe, a fiber could be seen on the reverse side of the coin, yet ano

Four years is a long time

Back in the coin collecting game Four years. In that time I could have completed one term as president. Earned another bachelor's degree. Or served a prison sentence for a serious felony. Alas, that's also how long I've been out of the coin collecting game. And the last time I submitted a journal entry. For the good readers of the numismatic community, sadly my story isn't unlike a lot of stories nowadays. In 2011 I went through a devastating divorce, and sold off what was the beginning

1948 Rotated Dies S$1 "The Prince of Rarities"

Very Rare Coin in High Grade Anyone know the story about why only 17,000 of these coins were minted? I have only ever seen two with rotated dies, the other was in ICCS AU50. Are rotated dies common in the Canadian Silver Dollar series, or does it add a premium? Just getting started expanding the circulating coinage collection, and I have a few questions. Any experts? A Member of The Family

After owning it for 16 years, it was time to have it graded. I can't believe it's been over a year since I last posted a journal entry. I hope to be a little more prolific in the future. This 1895 Liberty Head five dollar gold coin pictured below has been in my family for many years. I don't know exactly how many, but I'm reasonably certain that my paternal Grandfather acquired it before 1933, and probably sometime in the 1920's. He was not a collector, but rather a hoarder of silver and go

Good day to add a few pics.

A few clouds and some free time. Friends, As I have gotten my Lincolns to a good set standard I decided it was time to do some pics. Trial and error ended up with some rough lookers and some great ones. I will redo some later on in a month or 2, or 3?? Here is a shot of my 1957 -- pf68rd -- enjoy To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Switch by me not NGC!!

We all hate altercation of a well running site and then we do it to ourselves!! Friends. Well as much as I hate it when NGC upgrades to better running material I have done the same as well. I uploaded windows 10 and now have to redo EVERYTHING to get things rolling right once more. Hope all is worth the aggravation!!! Want to load a pick to see where it takes me in my pictures. Not too bad of a switch compared to the earlier trials I had to deal with. Enjoy!! To see old comment

Life of a BrokeCoinCollector Volume 3

Bringing Funny Back Well a while ago I started putting a set of $1 and $2 bills together. Got a little side tracked with my US coin type set this year. Think its about time to add an older bill to my set. Here is the earliest silver cert I have gotten so far. It is a 1928 A Funny Back. Not rare by any means but I still think its cool. Believe I got this for $10 ish at the Eagle eye coin shop here in Tucson. Not sure what the next one I will pick up is but have been want a $2 Battleship for

Its Time to Stop Dragging My Feet

I was so impressed by Alan Lastufkas, Most Improved post that I thought it was high time I kick it in gear and improve upon a few images of my own. Thus, this post features an image upgrade of one of my all time favorite coins, the Austrian 1908 Franz Joseph I, 60th Anniversary of Reign 100 Corona. Every one of the images of this coin I photographed several years ago and at the time I considered them to be satisfactory. Nevertheless, what was satisfactory then is no longer so today, especially

Kennedy Confusion

Three designations to the same coin? I was looking at my 2014 S High Relief Kennedy and noticed the same coin is seemingly listed three ways. It is in the census at SP EH and SP EHP and also as SP EHD. Can anyone explain the difference to me? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Modern commemorative halves

RAW I've always had a beef with "raw" coins and people think you have to get them graded. Well the mint is so good on what it does your new coins are 69 or 70 right out of the hole. Then you go to price it in your grading books and they don't even go past 65 on most occasions. Anyway I have a complete set or shall I say it's up to date since they don't know when it will end. A full set of modern commemorative halves. The majority being raw. I still have a full set of these modern halves incl

The Best of All

I have been to a total of five ANA Worlds Fair of Money shows and this year's show was far and away the best I have attended. That said, I have good memories of all the shows I attended. My first show was 2007 in Milwaukee. There I saw a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, a 100 kg gold coin, and Chet Krause's extensive collection of Wisconsin National Currency. Next for me was the 2011 show in Chicago to view M.L. Mosers spectacular collection of Morgan Dollars. Incidentally, I had the opportunity to

Whittling Down

One Coin At A Time I ordered a couple of commemorative halves and a Washington Quarter for my collection this week. I think there is something psychological about looking at your collection here and seeing gaps in years close up as you add coins. As I read magazines, I look at coins that are on the pie in the sky wish list and I wonder if I were to have the money to buy anything I wanted, when I wanted, would collecting be as much fun? What do you think? As much fun as it would be to w

Hit and Miss in ANA auction

No pattern developing here... As is typical, I had my eyes on some half dimes in the recent auctions associated with the ANA show. In particular, I was interested in an 1860 transitional pattern ("Obverse of 1859" with the hollow stars and reverse of 1860-1873 with the new wreath - the "coin without a country", so-called due to the lack of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on either side) and an 1867-S. The pattern is graded MS66+ by PCGS and better struck than most examples, so I expected a hammer p

Hawaii the 49th State !

Not a typo... Today (August 21, 2015) is the anniversary of Hawaii Admission Day or Statehood Day. Hawaii is actually the 50th State. However, So-called dollar HK-722a claims Hawaii is the 49th State (sorry Alaska). See image. Most HK-722a are holded to obliterate this "49" design error (overzealous designer, manufacturer, and issuer). The image is an intact specimen I purchased last month. It's my submittal candidate for HK-722a top pop. NGC population is a mere 3 specimens with a top

Most Improved

Decided to re-shoot a few coin pics last night. I chose coins where I definitely felt there was some room for improvement in the photography department. I take all of my own pictures, first with a lot of advice from Brandon (brg5658), and second with a few of my own learned tricks. After editing the pics this morning, it was clear that the 5oz silver America the Beautiful specimen coin was the winner for "most improved". The 1956 Denver Fullstep Jefferson

It took me years searching for this fullstep nickel. Like most Jefferson nickels in the 1950s finding one with complete fullsteps is very challenging, regardless of grade. My MS67 is a beauty in itself finding one in MS-66FS is the ultimate for me. In reference to David Bowers he mentioned that throughout the annals of the five cent piece, the Denver Mint has earned the lowest marks for quality of its coins.Finding any that show full details will be very challenging to find. If You Think Buying the Plastic is Bad...

Then buying the grade sight-unseen regardless of the plastic or the coin is especially bad! That said, I am embarrassed to admit that in my zeal to upgrade an XF-40 Indian-Head Eagle that I am guilty of doing just that. As a type collector, my main focus is to obtain the highest graded coins I can afford for a particular series. Thus very few, if any of the coins in my set are key dates or even semi-keys and most of the coins are quite common. With the price of gold currently down, I had det
