AUCTION ADVICE

HERTITAGE; SOME DO'S AND DON'TS I am looking at a coin that is coming up in a Heritage auction. Because I have never participated in a coin auction online, other than Ebay, I would like some help on what to do and not do. Or anything else I need to know like buyers fees? shipping insurance, etc. Or if someone would be willing to act as a surrogate on my behalf let me know. I guess I would entertain any help in this endeavor. Also I went to register through Heritage and they said I was al

I finally completed a set!

100% done with my Date Set of Walkers After six years of working on my Early Set and Date set; I finally finished my One Per Date Set. I lucked onto a 1921-D and I had pondered buying it but the dealer's images looked like it had dull luster. The next day, in my office at work, I looked at the NGC images and the luster looked amazing for an early Walker. I couldn't get any work done, as that coin was on my mind. It also had a great strike and was problem free. I decided to try to buy it a

Mad dash to the finish.

I'm not sure what possessed me, but about a week ago I decided to create an entirely new set before the close of the Registry Awards deadline today. I had no idea just how much work that would be or I never would have attempted it! Nearly four years ago, I read a really good article by Jeff Starck in Coin World entitled "The U.S. Mint Goes to War." I already have a Custom Set organized around the entire set of foreign coins struck by the U.S. Mint and other private mints in the USA, but isol

225 #1 Registry Sets, #7 Overall points, Now I can (semi) retire

What a year, glad it's over as far as the registry competition. Another year come and gone. I was able to get my #1 Registry Set count up to 225. It was 228 until some last minute entries. I'll catch up to those next year. The majority of my collection I'm going to start selling off. It is just too expensive for me to try and continue maintaing and updating all of these sets (as the wife would say, I need to get a life). I have way too many sets to keep up. I didn't even realize that I had ano

The Year in Review and a Sneak Peek at 2016

This past year has been a phenomenal year for my collection and in particular my 7070 type set. In just this set alone, I have both added and upgraded a total of 21 coins! That amounts to almost a quarter of the coins within the entire collection! Believe it or not, this came to me as a surprise along with the sum money I spent. When you assemble a collection with a coin here and a coin there you can amass quite a number of coins in a relatively short period of time. And that when my only inte

New PCGS Holders Don't Fit In NGC Boxes

PCGS does it again making their "New" holder Worse than their old ones. Sometimes I wonder if the people at PCGS are just mean spirited, greedy or maybe both. The new PCGS holders which were introduced a few months ago have added security feature on the bottom of the slab. This consists of a series of capital letters. Presumably to accommodate this feature they made their slabs fatter. Okay... Also, NGC lead the collecting community with the edge

Ego & Vanity vs Principles & Integrity

What would you do? I could easily be NGC Best in Category for the Presidential Mint State series. All I would need to do is buy the two MS69s available on Ebay and I would be in the lead. The price is not too bad for either of those Presidents either. Here's the issue: I could sell out my principles and integrity for what is simply for Ego and Vanity. Awards are nice but if it all it takes is who has the most money in the end to win, its not much of an accomplishment. And, in hundred yea

HOW TO GET MONEY FOR YOUR COLLECTION

Free money for coins. IRS happy too Coin collectors gather round. Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye!. I know, the biggest issue facing us today is how to get money for our collections without stripping our household budget to the bone, leave the Christmas fund alone, the college fund where it can grow and so on and so forth. I retired three years or so ago, and have found that two things loom in my mind that I want to do. One: To travel and two: to grow my coin collection to the highest attain

"One Dollar" versus "$1" on coinage

Using "$1" on our coinage leaves much to be desired. While the most recent presidential dollar coins are doing alright, I still have a problem with the reverse, namely seeing the denomination given as "$1" instead of being properly spelled out as "One Dollar." I believe this hurts the overall design and cheapens the coin to collectors and non-collectors alike. It makes the coin look like "play money' sold at Woolworth's and is one of the reasons I have avoided the series. As much as I hate to

The one the ONLY (For Now)

Population 1 For years NGC has never given a pre-1976 coin a PF70UC. Something has changed either for the better or the worse to allow such a thing as my newest acquisition. 1974 10c PF70UC from the great datentype. I know I was not the first person offered this coin but I have to say I was the first to agree to buy it. He also submitted a 1974 50c PF70UC that will undoubtedly end up in a registry set as well. Good luck to everyone in their collecting goals and Happy Thanksgiving! To

50th Quarter in the ATB set

Is it Colorado? When the Mint and the Parks Department promise to give each school child a "new" coin for attending, it was supposed to be the Battle of Saratoga quarter. The plastic capsules o one little girl contained a Colorado Statehood quarter. A few dealers said it was the worst introduction they had ever been to. Everyone had to drive to the local Post Office for stamping. Another inconvenience. I believe someone should make good on the promise of the new "50th" coin. The Mint is defini

Purchasing someone's registry set, sad story.

Over the weekend i was able to purchase 21 of 34 coins from a former #1 NGC registry set. On ebay i noticed a few high grade coins pop up at a great price so i decided that although I had them and most in higher grade i would purchase them. Since the earlier graded libertads have such low populations and you dont see them come up for sale very often, adding to my collection was a no brainer. As the day passed, i noticed there was a pattern to the selling as the owner started from oldest to

2011 Libertad MS70 pop 7 added to set

Finally found one after a year of looking. Not only was i able to upgrade my 2011 MS69 to a MS70 but the person i acquired the MS70 from had 2 of them. Of course i purchased them both as this was the first time I had seen one as there have only been 7 graded in MS70 for the year. The search continues for the 1997 MS70 pop 2 and the 2010 MS70 pop 1. The first book that cataloged this "lost" presidential medal series is ISBN 1511786744. The image is a composite of a snippet of my ANA presentation slide (lower portion) and of my latest acquisition from a collector in France. Another Ex-Gardner Half Dime

Unlike some other recent acquisitions, this one is normal. A couple years ago I posted about an 1861 half dime that I had gotten at auction. It is an example of the so-called 1/0 overdate, with the second 1 having extra raised metal that had been interpreted as remnants of an underlying 0. There are at least four 1861 obverse half dime dies that have this feature. It is now generally accepted that a faulty four-digit date punch was responsible, since the date digits and the supposed remnants o

Shrinking Stars

About those Gardner part 4 coins... In a journal this past July I wrote that I had purchased an 1838 Small Stars half dime. It is a nice looking example of an early state of the dies. Well, the state is about as early as it gets for this variety, but the dies are not pristine. The obverse die in particular had a notable amount of rust damage from the beginning of its use in actually striking coins. Being from an early state of the obverse die, the stars appear pretty much normal. The only ab

1986 Libertad DDO?

This was a false alarm. In searching through about 140 1986 1 oz bu libertads i noticed something strange on one. There appeared to be doubling on the top of the left hand and in several other areas of the coin. I went back through all the coins again and found 8 or 9 with the same exact doubling in the same areas. Unfortunately at the time i was not up to speed on the different types of doubling and submitted them to NGC as a new variety. After a little more education on doubling i called NG

2nd Libertad Registry Set Almost Complete

Only 1 more coin to go then its complete. Since i had so many extra coins from submissions to NGC i decided to start another registry set. Although the first set took about a year to build and take over the top slot the 2nd set only took a few months. Today i just upgraded the 1986 from a MS65 to a MS67 and only need the 2007 to complete it. I do have a raw 2007 but i dont think it will grade well so i may just wait till the right one comes along. New Interest New Journey

There is something about "Silver and Gold" coins that captures my interest... My journey began 5 years ago. Someone who I had only met while planning my 50th birthday celebration, attended my party and left two slabs in my birthday card basket as a gift. I was not sure what value they had but my interest was peaked to learn as much as I could. So. I did, and now I am hooked... To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New addition to my #1 libertad registry set.

Just received my latest submission back from NGC. I was able to upgrade the 1995 MS68 to a MS69 on my #1 set and upgraded 4 coins on my #5 BU set. When i started putting together a BU libertad set i never thought it would be possible to hit the 13,000 point mark as the person holding the #1 slot had it for 5 years. As time goes on i will continue to look for coins to upgrade in the set as my goal is to have all coins in top known grades. As of now the set has 20 of the 35 coins in top grad

A picture is worth.....

An ACCURATE picture is worth a lot more. I just received my latest ebay purchase, a 1921 Peace dollar. The photo from the ebay listing shows what appears to be some light, fairly even toning on the obverse, with a dark spot near the last digit of the date. That's not what I saw when I opened the package. Here's the ebay photo. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
