Unlisted and Unknown Katanga Rarity

Off the market for decades. A recent discovery that I found of this extremely rare Specimen Proof from the King's Norton Mint Collection which grades PCGS SP66RD. While no official mintage records are kept for most of these types of coins, typical mintages are 5-15 pieces. Sources that I have believe that there were only 3-5 of these struck, but who really knows for sure? This particular coin was off the market for decades. Currently no example has been graded by NGC, and only two are graded

My 55 Year Journey of Coin Collecting part 6 of 20

TWO FIRSTS In 2006 I joined EBAY and my very first purchase was my very first NGC graded coin a 1/10 oz 2005 Platinum China Panda. I even purchased one of the NGC storage boxes. The little coin I bought and put in the storage box would be awfully lonely because it was nearly 8 years between buying my first slab and buying the second. (I am now up to 8 storage boxes, but more on this in later blogs.) Since joining EBAY, all of my coin purchases have been made there. I have never been to a coi

Interesting Finds At The Bank

It was a great week Good evening, everyone. It's been awhile since I have been on here. We just purchased a house and we're ironing out a few kinks that we did not see before settlement. No biggie. So, my co-worker from Azerbaijan is only one coin away from finishing the Philadelphia portion of his State Quarter collection. He is missing Ohio. He is about half way finished with the Denver Mint. He told me today that he is loving looking for these coins. The numsmatics is flowing throu

From Silver to Gold In 1982 a friend showed me her birthday present, a 1/4 gold Chinese Panda made into a necklace. I just loved it and went to our local coin store to inquire about them. I was shown a complete set with a 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins. I was told that every year the reverse would change. The set was pricey but after thinking about it I decided I really loved it and bought the set. It was at this point of my collecting career that I decided that collecting U

Statehood Quarter Fun 1/2 Way Point

Mid-way point of the Registry Set! As mentioned a few weeks ago in my original Statehood Quarter Fun journal, I began building my Statehood Quarter Registry set back in late November 2015 with 3 coins. In December 2015, I added 42 more coins to their slots. This January, I added 40 more and am now just past the 1/2 way point with 60% of the collection and 85 coins! With the addition of my 2007 P SMS IDAHO NGC MS-68 coin, I slid into the #20 spot of NGC-only coins as well! 55 coins rema

Pre-EBAY- Bid Boards In the 70's I continued collecting coins. Our local coin dealer would have a bid board and every week would attach a file card to about 20 coins. People could write their bids and the "auction" would close at 2:00 pm every Saturday afternoon. This is the way I purchased coins long before EBAY was around. I had purchased a 10" x 12" Type Coin plastic holder from Capitol Plastics. My goal was to bid on and fill all of the holes in the holder. (Goal accomplished) In the m

Long Strange Trip

A tale of receiving new acquisitions... I've seen a number of comments in Journals and the Message Boards complaining about how long it takes to receive "winnings" from Heritage. Over the years, I've had a noteworthy experience or two, about which I have written past journals. None of my cases involve unreasonable (in my view) lack of timeliness, however. Last month, I won items in two Heritage auctions. From the FUN show auction (ended 1/10/16) I got three relatively inexpensive coins, an

New Libertad Variety, 1982 DDO

Just had NGC authenticate and grade the first one. This is another new variety i had NGC grade and it can back as MS66 DDR. This new double die is not as obvious as the 87 or 88 double die as the doubling is in the letter O for onza, the date and the word Mexico. One area that also stands out os the size of the angels left big toe, its huge. Once i get the coin back I will take some better pictures. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Loving Life and Big Congrats too the 2015 Registry Winners

A big shout out too all of my fellow collectors who supported me. Hi everyone. I would like too congratulate all of the 2015 registry Award winners. Great job. I was blessed too have won my share of registry awards for my former collection of Lincoln 1959-Present Lincoln circulation issue small cents. KKM, Jay Church and Sheila Moore you should be proud of your collections. It took me longer to catch Jay Church over the last several years than any of the other categories. A big congrats t

The SECRET Collection As I mentioned in yesterday's blog, we moved to a small town in 1967 because my father had purchased a small grocery and variety store. This was the summer before beginning high school and only three years after the advent of clad coins. My Dad and I came up with a SECRET collection. We were not to tell anyone else in the family, employees or friends about it for fear they would start doing the same thing. Every day during the summer and after school, I would go to my d

Devastated When I was about 9, my mother emphasized the importance of savings. She set up a bank savings account for me and explained that the bank would pay me interest every quarter. I had my own passbook and would take it into the bank periodically and the interest was recorded and I watched it grow. There was a problem and lesson learned. I had a great aunt that worked at a bank and every year for my birthday she would sent a brand new, crisp $2 bill. My father for his job as a salesman

My 55 Year Journey of Coin Collecting

The Very Beginning in 1960 When I was 7 my father bought me blue cardboard coin holders (one each for pennies, dimes, nickels and quarters.) Every day when he came home from work I would be waiting for him to take the change out of his pocket to search for coins to add into my slots. We did this together every evening and it was great father/daughter time. It was such a thrill to find a "new" coin to add. To this day I still have my nearly full (very well circulated) first coin collection. L

Th Real Obverse and Reverse of the Libertad

Its not what you think. When it comes to describing the Obverse and Reverse of a coin, the libertad is not what you think. The mint in Mexico actually calls the obverse on the libertad the side where they put the eagle and snake, their coat of arms. The reverse of the libertad is actually the side of the coin depicting the winged angel. I bring this us because most collectors and graders have described the obverse and reverse backwards. The new 1988 DDR variety i just submitted to NGC is actua

1982 1oz BU Libertad new Variety DDR

I submitted a 1982 1oz BU libertad to NGC for grading and it looks as though it may be a DD. The doubling is only in a small area by the word Onza but it appears as though its a real double die. A few months ago i received a 1982 Libertad and thought is was a real DD and not just another coin with bad machine doubling. I sat on it for a while and last week submitted it for grading. Because the doubling is small i couldn't capture a good pic of the area but it seems as though NGC is going to gi

Completing libertad set #3

Had some extra coins. Decided not to sell the extra libertads i had from all the coins i submitted for grading and would start another set. Right now the set is missing the 1992, 2001, 2007 and 2008 as well as the 88 DDR. I do have two more 88 DDR's with NGC now and hopefully these will come back with good grades. The current set is in 5th position and i dont think it will go any higher. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Fake 1893-S

Let's move on... What is the difference you ask? Okay I will again play the straight man and set you up for some insane response. Long Red Arrows show tight cluster of curls on the real coin with wide rivers between on the fake Short red arrows show fine detail in the hair on the real coin Gold arrows show sharp lettering on the real coin and fat lettering on the fake. WORLD COIN CENSUS NOT WORKING

World coin census has a number of bugs Is anyone else experiencing problems with the census? Census data is incorrect or incomplete on World coins, or the coin descriptions are inaccurate. When I try to look up the census information on a World coin, it forwards me to the page pictured below. I'm sure NGC is aware and working on fixing the bugs, as well as sorting through the countless 2016 submissions, which is appreciated. That being said, all of my purchases are dependent on census dat

Remembering Mr. Jay H Cline

From his formal top hat to being the foremost seller of the two bit coin, he will be missed. I bought this coin at the Long Beach show in 2010 from Mr Cline. Although not a standout even one of the weakest coins in the set and I paid a premium to it "buy from the master" it was well worth the experience. He was willing to talk with me when, at the time, I had not yet read his book and did not have a good knowledge of Standing Liberty Quarters (SLQ). As you can see he was also willing to autogr
