Nephew's First Coin

He's a cute little monkey, alright! I have enjoyed reading your posts about buying coins for your young family members and finally it's my turn. My nephew is only a few weeks old and I've already got his first coin. Of course I fantasize about him becoming a coin collector like his uncle but I'll be happy if he doesn't sell it at the first opportunity. Only time will tell about my nephew's future interests, but it does make me think about how what we post on-line now could very well be ret

National Parks Quarters

Latest Venture --- over 100 count coin submission!! Friends, With the Statehood quarters I found being all submitted I decided to move on with the Parks. This submission will have many "S" mint business strikes for set builders that are needing them. I got some great rolls from wdrob and others a couple years ago but didn't have the funds to submit them. 2 weeks at NGC and still at RECIEVED level I do expect the BULK submission to show the grades soon. This will be an exciting new set ad

Sarawak Coin

RAJAH CHARLES VYNER BROOKE 1927H -- 1941H BRONZE CENTS COIN The Sarawak early coppers / Bronze coin has been neglected and not everyone realizes how rare they are mostly in Mints state condition. With the demand has increased in last past few years, these coin are still way underrated compared to the actual rarity. The Rajah Charles Vyner Brooke Bronze Cents consist of five different year type, which is 1927H, 1929H, 1930H, 1937H and the most popular is 1941H. If we refer to any coin's catal

Now There's a Switch

Only one is graded lower at NGC. Normally I'm pursuing high grade examples of Liberty Seated Half Dimes. For most issues I can't afford the very highest graded coins, but can get nice ones just a notch down, with only a small number graded higher. But as I get closer to completing the set, the remaining slots are harder to fill. So I have been getting some less expensive coins to represent interesting varieties and die states. Almost a year ago I purchased an 1848-O half dime for my main set

An Unexpected Sale and Purchase

This past weeks Central States Numismatic Society show was full of unexpected surprises. For me, the unpredictability of this years show made it one of the most exciting CSNS shows I have attended. The day started off Thursday morning with a 2 1/2 hour drive to Schaumburg, Illinois where I met a collecting friend who was to sell some of my excess coins through his E-Bay store. One of those coins was a 1924 MS-62 double eagle that I bought about ten years ago. As I recently posted, I just upgra

My latest Pop 1 Grade PF70 UC coin

2009 S$15 Canada King Of Hearts PF70 Ultra Cameo Here is the latest addition to my coins with a population of 1 at grade 70. I currently have 155 coins in my Custom Set "The Dan Hughes Grade 70 Pop 1 Collection", this will be #156. In the world coin arena it is obviously much easier to get a pop 1 coin, still feels great when it happens. There are 4 coins in this Series, Canada $15 Playing Card Money Series - Ten Of Spades, Jack Of Hearts, Queen Of Spades, & King Of Hearts. I have submitte

With a mintage of only 12,000 pieces, the 1883-CC ten is scarce in all grades and extremely rare in Mint State, with most such pieces showing heavy abrasions. This Choice AU representative is a more affordable alternative. The fields have light chatter but are nonetheless deeply reflective, and the design elements show trivial wear. Bright yellow-gold color blankets each side. Population: 12 in 55, 13 finer.Th

$5,000 / month

$5,000 / month I have taken on a few challenges that only a few collectors have managed to complete. Those challenges include building top sets for Modern Canadian Commemorative coins. Being one of the most prolific Mints in the World, this challenge has become a $5,000 per month expenditure (investment). Just to stay current on these sets will easily set you back $2000-$2500 a month. This has everything to do with the sheer volume of coins that the Mint produces annually. In the case of

IMPROVING MY BEST WORLD SET

The difficult task of searching for the highest grades When NGC awarded my "Gold Colon Coinage, 1897-1928, Circulation Issue" set as one of the Best World Sets for 2015, the judge's comments were that "The grades of this collection are outstanding". By the time of the award, 12 of my 15-coin set were either the highest solitary grade or tied to the highest grade. The difficult task was to work hard to be able to find those 3 missing coins to have a perfect set. One of those coins was an "20 co

The 100th Coin in the Statehood Quarter Registry Set!

With some recent acquisitions from SixMileRick, I finally achieved the goal of filling the 100th slot in this 140-coin Registry Set! Since I last posted, I have acquired 16 more coins and now have 101 in this set. The collection is now 72% complete. The 100th coin is the 2008-P Arizona NGC MS66. I took the advice of SixMileRick recently to go ahead and not focus so much on NGC MS67 or better and I'm glad I did because I was struggling to find specimens for my Registry set and looking clos

Dealers cherry picking and selling you their rejects.

Are we going to have to pay a ransom to dealers to stay out of your merchandise before shipping? Is Apmex starting a trend for other dealers to follow with their premium on top of the premiums for their "mint direct" products? I know this happens and i have heard of large dealers cherry picking through tubes of new releases for grading and shipping out the rejects but this is my first experience seeing myself. Last week i received my first 2 tubes of 2016 libertads with the intention of submit

Finally! The Medal that Will be the Centerpiece of My New Collection

Since I started my collection of Laura Gardin Fraser coins and medals, the 1920 American Army and Navy chaplains medal has been at the top of my list to purchase. These medals rarely become available for sale and the last one I bid in 2015, I lost. Since then I had e-bay searches set up to locate others that may become available. Though these medals are scarce, they don't cost too much since the demand is low. It's just that the people who own them rarely sell them. With a pocket full of e-bay

Lights, Camera, Action!

Most of the action is in re-positioning the lights. Today I took one of my best coin photographs. I've been working on improving my photography skills and I've re-imaged much of my collection over the last two years. My setup is fairly modest; an inexpensive copy stand and refurbished Canon SL1 DSLR, with macro capable lens, that I got for a super low price last Black Friday. Frankly, I'm not sure I see much improvement over my previous camera, a Canon G9, since I mainly photograph large

Letting one go for once.

Not often that I sell a coin I sent off for grading myself. I've never been one to make a lot of coin submissions. Generally I'm happier to just buy the coin already graded. I'm sure that cuts me out of some potential steals and great deals but it's just what's worked best for me. I've never been much of a risk taker and ultimately there are elements of risk in every coin submission, not all of which are the ones you suspect. One of the few times I sent in a submission the postal service was n
