Reflection on a Collection

I was inspired to look at my collection in a different light. When I contemplate my collection, I generally think about dates, types, grades and values; and I visualize linked pairs of obverse and reverse sides. I enjoy learning about the history and personalities associated with the times, places and persons represented by the coins. so they are part of my reflection as well. However, when I saw the photo montage that one of the collectors ATS put together, of the best face of several of hi

Early US Commemorative Half Dollars

Picked up a few over the past few years and now i am hooked. After attending the local coin show here in Richmond, i picked up a few more commems. Last year i picked up the 36 Connecticut since i attended grad school in Hatford and i used to ride my bike past the Charter Oak. Little did i know how much that single coin would cost and i was shocked. After the CT half i picked up a few of the texas commems because i really like the extreme detail on the coin. Fast foward 18 months later, while a

My Latest Loss

A little reverse psychology on collecting!! Hey friends, Well this week ended up in a trade with another member. I have been working on 1979 proof set a couple years now. Only missing a few keepers to complete I traded a sweet 1988 Lincoln PF70rdUC for a 1979 25c Type 2 70UC and some cash. As this is a farewell to the Lincoln I decided to post a pic for perfection. Good Bye and Enjoy To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

I think I found another nice Indian

I don't see anything wrong in the photos I just worked out a deal for this 1909 Indian Head Cent. The photos look great, with just a few little marks and tiny spots. The color looks original, and the strike is pretty strong. What do you think? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

2016 Will Be My Last Year

All sets will have a 2016 end date First let me say, that my 10 year journey into the NGC Registry Sets has been both fun and exciting. In addition to building some of the greatest Canadian Commemorative Silver coin sets, I have also made many friends and battled many competitors. As with most journeys, a destination is reached at some point. Mine is the year 2016, the end date of all my Canada Commemorative sets. The Royal Canadian Mint has upped the number of coins released per year in

To Cross, Sell or Trade...

The coin that can no longer function as part of the registry set. When I started looking at my collection again recently, trying to decide where I might want to try to start working on it again I knew I wanted to just focus on one, maybe two things for now and try to make that set pretty awesome (to the extent my time and budget allows). I thought it would be fun to try to finish my 1875-1889 Netherlands 10G set since it's classic gold and I wanted to work on a gold set, but I quickly realiz

The 1957 Oklahoma Semicentennial Medal

Thematic coins and medals based on western subjects were a favorite of both Frasers. James Earle Fraser was born in Winona, Minnesota on November 4, 1876. In 1880 his family moved to Mitchell in the Dakota Territory. It was here in the vast openness of the American frontier that James love of the West grew. In the case of Laura Gardin Fraser, I believe it was her love of American history, the allure and excitement of the American frontier, and her love of horses that inspired her rendition of th

Just looking for some input.

After all, the whole reason for this is to show off ones collection. Been here for a few years now. The few that know of me might remember some of my custom sets. But I made the mistake of selling everything and now I'm starting all over. I'm not really feeling the "competitive" side of it all anymore. So I started a new custom set. I am about half way into it. But after looking at it, I find it a little cluttered. Which brings me to the reason for this letter. I was wondering if some of

Coins like this one really help to keep me in the game.

I really LIKE fresh material, too.   And I was drawn to this one like a moth to the flame.Fresh to the market and in an older NGC #7 slab that's in perfect condition. This coin is 99% bright white with just a very light skin. The strike is freakishly sharp on both the obverse and reverse, even considering the fact that the 1934 P is, generally, a rather well produced issue. The fields are virtually pristine. Luster looks pretty decent, as well. This one looks so much better than the MS

National Parks Quarters

Submission from NGC has made it home!! Friends, I sent in a parks quarter submission a few weeks ago. Hoping to get a few top pops for the rank 1 set to boost his points spread. Well I do think NGC was a bit tight on the grades but I did come up with a MS68 Peace Memorial S mint which he could use. This is the first and only for this coin and Pinnacle Collection is glad to add it to his set. I started a set myself which should be a fun new addition. There are many extra coins if someone

The Society of Medalists First Issue

Before Laura Gardin Fraser married James Earle Fraser on Thanksgiving Day of 1913 she was an admiring student under his tutelage at the Art Students League in New York City. After three years as a student she joined him as an instructor at the school in 1910. It is here that she honed her skills as a sculptor, receiving several awards for her work.[1] Perhaps on account of James teaching Laura learned that to be successful as a medallic artist she needed to simplify the design, employ appropri

Can you can from "competitive page" to "custom sets" page on your "control panel "

I have no idea how to use the chat boards Hello everyone, I have been gone from the world of coin collecting for a little while. Decided to get back into it just for fun. Which brings me to my question. Does anyone know if you can switch your main page in your "control panel" from "competitive page" to your "custom sets" page? You know so if someone looks at your profile they will see that page first. Thanks To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be ad

My First Gold Coin

and the survey says? Howdy Friends, Just added the 2016 W 1/10 oz. Gold 100th Anniversary Mercury Dime to my collection. Beautifully struck coin especially the reverse which exhibits very crisp detail. Apparently the next two releases for this set will be the gold Standing Liberty Quarter and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Sadly they will be out of my price range but I'm very pleased to add this little gem to my hoard as my first gold coin. Also would like to pass on a thank you to our

Never Use USPS to shipp anything of value

Boxes full of gold and silver stolen by the USPS I shipped a package to NGC via USPS on 11th. Today the 13th I found out that the USPS declared that I was committing mail fraud and never stated why. Remember the US Government runs and owns the USPS, so they can do what ever they like. From mow on UPS or FedEx will be my choice for shipping to anyone. And to top it off the USPS will not provide a date as to when it will release my package. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click her

The REAL Value

A coin is ultimately worth what someone will pay for it Okay, so it appears that the FIFTH time is the charm. As some may recall from an earlier journal I wrote, I have been bidding weekly on the 2016 Canada S$2 bimetallic Polar Bear proof issue ( say that in one breath.) Technically it is the 99.9% silver proof issue from the fine silver set and the inner ring is gilt with 24k gold--hence, what one must go through to collect Canadian coins/series. So this is the fifth time that this coin ha

To He Who Waits

Good things will come....... One thing that does not come naturally to me is patience. Coin collecting over the years has demanded that I learn patience however, for my own peace of mind as well as my check book. With the growth of the internet influence on our hobby in the past few decades, it has become ever more tempting to just fill all of the "holes" in one's collection with the readily available selections on the dozens of websites and auctions. It requires a lot of self control for me
