Got my 250th after all

Goal: 250 #1 Registry Sets This last December I retired. No longer having the funds to continue building and keeping up with all of my sets, I gave in to the realization I would not make the Goal I had set for myself many, many years ago to reach 250 #1 Registry Sets. I was in the 220's at the end of the year and knew I would have to start selling off all of my coins to bridge the gap between retiring from work and waiting a few more years before starting to take social security. I decided to

1826 N-2 Large Cent

FRANK DEWITT ANDREWS IS THIS YOUR 1826 N-2? This is the question I would like to ask but instead ask the help of fellow ole' copper collectors, to help me decide. I am noticing the second letter S in STATES being rotated clockwise marginally along with the two Ts in STATES having their left arms broken and leaning on some 1826 N-6 reverses but not on others. Our founding father of Matron Cent varieties described in his 1881 54-page self-published pamphlet, what has since become known as his 1

Is this a US Mint issue? Did the mint really sellout to the big marketers with no public release? I found this on MCM for an obscene amount. It appears to be a US mint issue and NGC has certified it giving it credibility. On the US Mint website there is no mention of this coin on the product schedule. can anyone tell me is the really what is? RMW Collection of England and Great Britain

Submitted British coins. In the next few weeks I will be able to add several dozen English and British pieces to the collection manager. Currently sent in for grading are a variety of George IV and Victorian farthings, a number of blackened farthings from the 1897-1917 period, and various pieces already graded by PCGS but sent in for crossover to NGC. Included in the latter group if pieces is an 1844 halfcrown currently graded MS 66, a VIP Proof 1938 halfcrown in PR 66+ (this piece is the hi

LOL! What is the point?

Why keep doing this? Can't seem to understand why certain sets are continually dramatically reduced in points value on the registry. One of the rarer coins in Canadian circulation coinage is 1955 NSF 1 cent coin. An NGC top pop issue is now worth a whopping 72 points. Whereas new MCM releases seem to receive 1000 points, even though 60-70% of their releases are grading PF70. I don't see the point in spending all this time and money creating a registry for users, if you are constantly going

The Centennial Medal of the American Numismatic Society

This is the second of what I hope will be three finished descriptions this week. This set is coming along rather nicely and I added the Grant Dollar to the Laura Gardin Fraser set two weeks ago. I hope that you enjoy my post, I am learning a lot about the Fraser's and I believe the cumulative descriptions are beginning to give me a glimpse into the heart of Laura Gardin Fraser. The American Numismatic Society was founded in New York on April 6, 1858, to advance numismatic knowledge. In 1958 th

This one just spoke to me

And I give in to a good strike and luster. A couple of years ago; I purchased a 1947 P Walker coin in NGC MS 66+ that I really liked and that is fully original. I also liked the 1947 P coin, because it gave me just a few more Registry points for my Date Set than it's Denver brother, and I got it for a lot less than I had thought that I would have to pay. Anyway, my plan was always to make it a matched set by finding a nice 1947 D coin in NGC MS 66+ to go along with it. I had the opportun

The George Washington Bicentennial Medal

Writing descriptions for the coins and medals in my sets is time consuming for me. First comes the hours of trying to uncover even the most obscure of information about the subject which I am writing. Finally, I have to figure out based on a theme what to write and what to leave out. Then I have to present my description in a readable, grammatically correct way as not to bore the reader. Its quite exasperating but at the same time enjoyable. With a week off from work, I have time to get things d

Father's Day Newp.

First Father's Day and a new coin. Thought I'd share a post today about this new acquisition I got in the mail about a week ago. 2016 ¼ Oz Gold American Eagle, made around the same time my son was born +/- 3 months. I thought it'd be a fun way to mark the birth and hopefully he'll find it cool when he gets older. It's also the 30th anniversary year for the series. The first year of issue (1986) is the birth year for both my wife and myself. The coin came pretty much the day of my wife's 30th b

Was there a GSA Gold Hoard and subsequent distribution?

I've never heard of a GSA gold hoard release is this just a marketing ploy? I was browsing the auction archives at Heritage and came across a group of coins that I had never heard of. They were 2-1/2 dollar Indians slabbed in an NGC holder with the GSA attribution. This makes no sense to me in view of the fact that when gold or bullion was recalled by the federal government in 1933 it was melted into ingots for storage at Fort Knox. I know that in the past dealer's with enough coins to grad

The passing of an iconic numismatist.

Lyman L. Allen passed away on June 10, 2016 at the age of 75. It is with heavy heart that I write today to inform you of the passing of noted numismatist Lyman L. Allen. His obituary can be found on the web site of the Nevada Appeal at: http://www.nevadaappeal.com/news/obituaries/22481921-113/lyman-allen The text is short though, so I am including it here: ------------------------------------- Jan. 25, 1941 ~ June 10, 2016 Lyman L. I'm out

Had a lot of fun I've attempted to educate NGC about GSA's and VAMS repeatedly. I'm just beating my head against the wall. Last year and then last month I asked about adding VAMS and was told only those on the Hit List 40, Hot List 50 and Top 100 would be allowed. Not true; 1881-CC, 1883-CC and 1884-CC have VAMS in the registry and aren't on any list. Now I'm being told PCGS GSA's aren't allowed and have never been allowed in the hard case GSA registry. I've learned so much from so many her

Fun new pick-up...

While I'm continuing to mull over the fate of the 1875... In the midst of trying to decide what I want to do with the PCGS-graded 1875 Netherlands 10 Guilden, I found an 1887 for sale on eBay. It's only an MS64 where I mostly like to stick with MS65 or higher but this coin doesn't come up for sale very often in any grade. Only about 40,000 were minted originally and only about 50 have been graded by NGC, and this one was graded by NGC so it works for the registry set. The icing on the cake was

No more PCGS in GSA's

Started with world coins now beginning with GSAs' NGC has every right to do what they want with their company and registry. It started with removing world coins from the registry now they're starting to remove PCGS coins from the GSA Carson City hard pack registry sets. Which sets are next? It's not IF but when. A little warning or heads up would have been considerate. I was wondering why the site was down for several hours Thursday the 9th, now it seems clear. I for o

An American Classic Henry Clay, Sr. (April 12, 1777 -- June 29, 1852) was an American lawyer and planter, politician, and skilled orator who represented Kentucky in both the United States Senate and House of Representatives.
