RMW Collection of England and Great Britain

Another George III Farthing Here is a piece recently purchased in London, an 1806 farthing. there are many varieties of this, as well as various patterns and proofs in different metals. These were not produced by the Royal Mint, but at the Soho Mint Birmingham, using revolutionary (for the time) steam powered machinery. The Soho factory can be considered to be the first factory in the modern sense in the world, using steam power. These are relatively easy to get in a good grade, unlike the f

The Super Registry Sets - Part III World Sets Niue Silver $2, 2006-Date, Proof and Prooflike - 400 Slots

The Mother Of All Registry Sets when it comes to sheer number of slots. When I first started looking at the larger Registry Sets when it came to the number of slots, I was not that surprised to find that the Niue $2 Proof was at the top with 400 slots. The majority of these have been added by myself and (friendly) competitor David (Dharma King / Go Mango), of course with the help of Ali, Jane, Lisa, Maribeth, Melanie and all of the other great people at NGC who worked so patiently in helping g

End of The Coin Year Sprucing Up

As my membership renewal approaches, my personal end of the coin year organizing begins. November and December have been my "end of the coin year" time period for more than a decade. The registry deadlines, my membership renewal and my purchasing hiatus through the holidays all occur at roughly this same time. I have many things I have done, a few I hope to finish in the next 5 weeks and piles of Short Term Goals which have become Long Term. My submission procrastination has left me with a

Finished My Walker Short Set

It was my year end goal and an enlightening experience. While I was building my early set; I had hit a roadblock and was getting burned out looking for good coins, in the right grades, so I decided to work on the short set, as a relaxing diversion----a way of keeping me involved, while still looking for the really rare and expensive stuff. It was just some cheap fun, at first! It also had some overlap with my one per date set that I was also working on, as I had almost all of those early coi

No Mad Scramble This Time

Even with a lessening mintage, the availability of the gold 100th anniversary issues is plentiful. After having to use the secondary market to acquire the Mercury Dime edition of the 100th anniversary gold commem coins from the US mint, I battled on the first day of issue for the Standing Liberty Quarter ( 1/4 oz gold) coin. It turns out that there was no need for the frustration of a jammed up ordering system to acquire the SLQ edition- there are still some left in stock at the mint website.

The Super Registry Sets - Part II "World Sets Niue Silver $1, 2007-Date, Proof and Prooflike" - 358

Review of the second of 3 Registry sets having over 300 slots, the Niue S$1 Proof The Niue Registry $1 set has ballooned in the last couple of years. Unlike the first Set I reviewed, the Canada $20 Proofs, the Niue coins have a much more diverse set of features on many of the coins. Square, key shaped, animal shaped (horse's head), etc., there has been a lot more "freedom" (for lack of a better word) in the coin's design rather than the usual round shape. Another interesting design that has

US Numismatic Discovery Models (Part 2)

This is how a new US Mint series was discovered! www.money.org/collector/drdarryl/blog/us-numismatics-discovery-models-part-2 The image below is of the Class 2 series of the President of the United States special Government medal (POTUS sGm) series. US Numismatic Discovery Models (Part 1)

How can an entire US Mint series be discovered? I created six numismatic discovery models for a numismatic book I'm working on. The first three models explains the different types of US numismatic discoveries (these models can be tailored for specific area of US numismatics or non-US numismatics). I shared my first three models at my ANA blog (link below). www.money.org/collector/drdarryl/blog/us-numismatics-discovery-models-part-1-2 To see old comments for this Journal e

H.E.L.P.- From the Registry Community

Advance grading I religiously, (without purchasing) watch that coin show that airs on TV. What puzzles me is the mint will release the Walking Liberty Half Dollar 2016 Centennial Gold Coin on November 17, 2017. The official mintage will be 70,000 with a household order limit of 3. I realize that these large companies cosign multiple people to order coins for them which accounts for them having so many coins immediately upon the release. My problem is how can this dealer air on November 13 th

The 1923 Morgan Horse Club Award Medal

I have finally completed all the write-ups for The Coins and Medals of Laura Gardin Fraser. This medal was the last write-up for me to complete. Next year I'll have more medals waiting in the wing to add to this set including the 1912 National Institute of Social Sciences medal and the scarce 1930 Endecott Massachusetts Bay Tercentenary medal. As a young girl, Laura Gardin had always enjoyed her family's summer home in New Jersey where she especially enjoyed riding her horse. It was here that

RMW Collection of England and Great Britain

1775 farthing I was able to complete a date set of British George III farthings by the purchase of this piece, which has more red than the 1774 posted the other day. One thing I look for in pre 1816 British pieces is the quality of the strike, as the production process did not have steam or any other power involved, and merely used weighted pulley systems to produce the strike. They often came out incompletely or flat as a result. The upper classes who controlled the country at the time ofte

RMW Collection of England and Great Britain

Just purchased-1774 farthing I have been improving my collection of George III British copper lately and here is a recent purchase, of a nice 1774 farthing MS 65. There seems to be a bit of interest in British in Australia and this was purchased from there. The wonders of the Internet. I wouldn't have had a clue of the exitence of a piece like this in Australia years ago. Also bought a nice 1775 halfpenny, but I dont have a good picture of that yet. Opinions, please

I'm puzzled.... Good evening. I have this bill sitting in my vault at work and it is puzzling me. The bill is not crisp from a pack, but is not in bad condition. It has a line where it appears the ink never hit. I thought it was a crease line, but in looking at it, I can't see at the top or bottom where a crease reaches the edge. Can anyone shed light on what I might be looking at here? Thank you.   Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be

Sometimes They Come in Bunches

There may be weeks or months between a suitable hole filler- and other times your hunting yields several at a time. Part of the fun and challenge of collecting a series in which you limit yourself to a grade window or appearance type ( toning, color, whiteness, frost, cameo etc) is that one must often hunt for weeks just to find a single filler for a slot in a set. I will often come across coins I could "settle" for--a grade above or below my parameter or a certain rub, carbon spot, dark/black

The Super Registry Sets - Part I Canada $20 - 352 slots

Building 3 Registry Sets that each have over 300 slots, one of them now at 400! This year has been one of winding down the volume of coins I add to my collection each year. I retired at the end of last year and it's very expensive to keep up all of the sets I have. I decided to narrow it down to a few and after this year will narrow down even more. As I was reviewing my Sets, I was curious on a few of the larger ones how many slots they each have. There are now 3 that have over 300 slots, h

The Type 1 Liberty Double Eagle

To me there is nothing more beautiful than a strongly struck, mint-state or almost-uncirculated, Type 1 Liberty double eagle with a minimal number of contact marks. Conversely, there is nothing uglier than a heavily worn Type 1 double eagle or a highly graded coin with numerous contact marks. Thus, as a type collector, my challenge is to find a double eagle that meets both my criteria, AND more importantly, is affordable. Fortunately, I had a wide range of dates that I could choose from. Top Executive Accepts Kickback

Establishes private mint on behalf of family Sorry to tease with a headline that could have come from current affairs but there's nothing new about powerful, greedy people finding ways to enrich themselves. In this case, I'm calling out Philip II of Spain, who in 1580, negotiated such a sweetheart deal with his cousin, Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria, that he was presented with two coin rolling mills, constructed at the Hall mint, as a present. Today, we would deem such a considerable pers

Just sent in for slabbing Here is one ofthe best James II sixpences I have seen, just sent into NGC for slabbing. this piece is lustrous and fully struck, unusual for James II pieces which quite often are weak at the top of the portrait on the obverse, as well as at the corresponding date area of the reverse. State Quarter set is now COMPLETE!!

What a search it took in rolls!! Friends, I finally got my grades returned today and added the best in the submission to my set. I was low on around 27 grades and needed around 12 holes filled. With a search of around 180 rolls I managed to pull off a full set before the end of the year. My best grades --- MS68's were 2001-P Vermont, 2002-P Louisiana, 2005-D California, and 2008-P Arizona. There always seems to be a few sweets in each submission. Hoping that you end your years quest as w
