Trying again.

I appologize if this is showing up twice. Still trying to get used to the new journals. Anyone that knows me knows that I tend to collect nice circulated pieces. Despite that when you I see a coin almost 200 years old in almost perfect condition I have to take a second look.  The largest portion of my collection contains coins from the German States. The area of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel put out some fascinating pieces in a wide variety of designs. My favorites by far are the Wildman coins. Th

RMW Collection of England and Great Britain

Here is an example of a pattern farthing issued in the mid 17th century, dated 1665, which was bought late last year and will go to NGC for grading soon. This is catalogued as Peck 423, an extremely rare long hair variety , the dies for which were apparently made by John Roettier, who apparently helped to introduce machine made coins to England. There are a lot of varieties of 1665 farthings, made over a number of years. This piece, virtually as struck, is one of the better ones I have seen.

RMW, would you be willing to check my work?

RMW, So, I'm trying to use your formula you taught me. And I was wondering if you would be willing to check my work? I was looking at a 1940 six pence on ebay. The item # is 122382859421.  The surface looks great, but it has zero luster, and the eye appeal is nothe there. But like most post 1900 coins it has a fine strike. So, with 2 of the 4 bases covered, do you think a coin like this would come out a 65? If you get time please take a look and tell me if I'm understand

Insuring Your Coins & Collectibles

My intention in writing this entry is not to come across as an advertisement because that is my last intention (you can check out my registry sets right here on the site). In all honesty, I want to share the following information for fellow collectors who find themselves in the exact position I was in merely a month ago. In saying that, over the years, my collection has grown to be quite valuable. I take pride in the work I have put into my collection, as I have dedicated years of my life t

RMW Collection of England and Britain

At long last I completed a date set of British Edward VII Pennies yesterday, although that piece (a 1907) has yet to be submitted for grading to NGC. Here is an example of the scarcest item in the set, the 1902 Low Tide Penny.

My submission gave me a black-eye

I think of British coins like milk, I love them but they hate me.  I looked over some of my "best" British coins and pulled out a few that I thought were true winners.  I came up with a 1937 crown that I thought was a sure lock for a 64 and maybe even a 65 if the NGC gods were kind.  But it came back a ordinary 63.  I also sent in a 1895 Florin that I would have bet my car was atleast a 64 and that came back a 63.  And to top it off I had yet another one (1834 farthing) come back in a purpl

What is a Coin of Hawaii?

And why does Heritage Auctions put them in their own category? Before they became a US territory in 1900, the islands of Hawaii had been unified into a kingdom that existed for nearly a century. The Kingdom of Hawaii issued their own coinage, cents in 1847 and a series of silver coins in 1883. The cents were struck by a private firm in Massachusetts and the silver dimes, quarters, halves and dollars were designed by Charles Barber and were produced at the San Francisco Mint. Shifting Gears and a Different Direction

One might think that shifting gears and a different direction are synonymous. However, the truth is that though related, they are two separate actions. A different direction in that I will be liquidating a portion of my current collection to focus on another and shifting gears in that I will be buying fewer but higher quality coins to upgrade the remaining sets. All this started with my losing interest in collecting Morgan Dollars. A year or two into collecting Morgans, I got bored with them.

Washington Quarters

Still looking I am still looking for 1952 P&D and 1953 P&D with no toning. Since they are so common I would expect them to be on Ebay and Heritage all the time. I am on the NGC registry so they must be NGC or PCGS MS 67 CAC.............Daniel McMunn

My Procrastination Has Left Me Swamped

It may be time to show some discipline and get things in order. I am not a procrastinator by nature. I am usually the polar opposite. In fact, if I am being honest in my self assessment, I am a bit compulsive with my desire for order in a universe ruled by the ceaseless tides of entropy. For example, if a bill arrives in the mail I will almost immediately pay it, write the date and amount on the invoice and then file it in the appropriate folder. I am never satisfied to rinse a plate and le

Restrike Surprise!

I should have noticed this before... When I started collecting half dimes several years ago, I was still working primarily on my large cent set. My idea with the half dimes was to start with the collector era proofs, 1858-1873. But I ended up getting hooked on the larger, business strike set of Liberty Seated Half Dimes, and only infrequently added to the set of proofs. Late last year, however, I did make one of those proof additions. It is a nice 1863 PR 66 Cameo, certified by PCGS -
