British Charles I death Memorial Medal

Here is an example of a memorial medal issued in commemoration of the death (he was beheaded) of King Charles I of England, issued around 1670, I think, about two decades after his death. You can note the symbolism of the design on the reverse with  the arm (of God) coming out of the clouds with a crown, meaning that the King was given sovereignty by God alone, and that therefore he was not answerable to any other individual or group in his kingdom. Another State Quarter Submission

Friends,  As I was really thinking of getting away from the state quarter series I did decide to do another submission on the quest. A little surprised on the conflicts needed to enter this journal but I see things getting rougher as time passes. Anyway -- seeing that our journals are no longer part of our member page I have a hard time thinking that all is so well with NGC!! This is definitely going to be a rough ride!!  I will renew my membership in a month and try a few submissions.

A Nice Score !

I have certain rules that I always (most always) hold on Ebay purchases but none of them are fully iron-clad. I do on occasion buy coins from sellers with low feedback numbers if it "feels right" that a small lot or group of coins really does look like somebody's cigar box collection. Sometimes I will purchase coins from overseas. I avoid Chinese fakes and those with export/import issues, but I have gotten some nice coins at pretty good prices from Portugal, Spain, the UK etc. One must alwa

US Mint blew the 2017 Congratulatios set Release

Well My gut feel on the S mint Proof Silver Eagle would sell out fast.   But I got to say it sold out faster than even than my assumptions. I logged on early at 11:30 made sure my log in and credit card was up to date. All of this prep helped me out because I had my order confirmed within 30 seconds. Kennedy Half Dollar Collectors Will Freakout

In all accounts, the true precursor design of the reverse side of the Kennedy half dollar is from the Class 5 Kennedy President of the United States (POTUS) special Government medal (sGm). A pleasant surprise in the mail today

When I arrived home today I noticed a thick large padded envelope sitting on the kitchen table that my wife brought in sometime today from the mail box and it was from NGC and thinking what can this be and to my delight it was a plague with my Registry award for my Icelandic Kingdom Era Collection. Was not expecting this at all, maybe a paper certificate.  Thank You NGC for this wonderful plaque and I will proudly display it in my home.

During the long reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) there were four major designs issued for florins, the two Gothic Types, A and B, then the Jubilee and Veiled Head types towards the end of the reign. With the 50th anniversary of her reign in 1887, a new type came out, replacing the Gothic type, namely the Jubilee type. Which way to go??

Magazines worth their while?

World Coins, 12 issues $25.99   Coin World - Weekly News Resources 52 issues $69.99.  Coin World-Monthly 12 issues $24.99.  Thinking about subscribing.  Reviews in Amazon nor really helpful.  Wondering about your thoughts on any of these.  Seems biggest gripe on them all is delivery problems.  Not much on content tho.  Thoughts would be much appreciated.  PS  anyone have the Boys Town Commem in PF70 and MS70 brown label for sale?

Be Yourself

I have been collecting my whole life. My collection has taken many wandering paths to arrive where it is today. For years I built sets of U.S coins because that is what I thought you were supposed to do. The few dealers that I had access to (pre-internet) had no interest in foreign coins or really anything that they didn't have. In fact they tried to steer me away from anything other than US coins. They lead me to believe that world coins were junk and not worthy of being collected seriously.

Godless or Gothic?

I was trying out my new book I got today, "COINS OF ENGLAND & THE UNITED KINGDOM" put out by SPINK, and I am having a hard time understanding its reference to a coin that I'm realizing that I know very little about.  I have a 1849 Florin and I thought that only 48'S & 49's were the "godless" type A.  But in my new book it looks like they can also be the "gothic" type B.  Can anyone shine some light on this?

Here is one of the better examples of a William and Mary halfpenny from England, dated 1694. A combination of things makes this piece highly unusual. Copper pieces were not considered even as real money by the upper classes which ran things in England at the time. That, and the primitive machinery used at the time, made the strikes for this issue incomplete in most cases. This piece has a much better than average strike for the type. Alternate Reality or Just a Blunder

Perhaps a  new numismatic collecting category is required? Blunder collecting... As it can be explained, a few intact specimens slipped by the manufacturer who eagerly holed-out the "49" as to remove the obvious timing blunder as Alaska became the  49th state. This is not an error. It's an unfortunate timing of the Alaska statehood event when this SCD was struck. Actually, SCD HK-722A can be claimed as a specimen from the Territory of Hawaii period (and while the US had only 48 states)

Alaska - Hawaii Statehood Uniface So Called Dollar

When I saw the Hawaii Uniface SCD HK-537 being offered for sale I jumped at the chance to own it. I've look hard and far to have one in my collection. This well known dealer convinced my to purchase the Alaska Uniface SCD HK-536 in order to keep them as a pair. It was good that I listened to him. These two medals are currently the only pair graded by NGC (or any other TPG company).
