Yes, it is a trick question.
My question is about an 1808 dated 8 reales with the bust of Fernando VII and the mint mark of Potosí from the Spanish Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata (modern day Bolivia). The answer lies in the tumultuous history of the period. Here's an illuminating discussion from a recent Heritage Auction catalog description:
This apparently anachronistic issue was due to the Royal Ordinance of April 10, 1808 which was sent to the mints of the Americas before Ferdinand V
A little early...
As you know, I am trying to get some of my cousins' kids interested in coins. I sent my cousins Sonia and Claudia each a proof set, an album for holding 2x2s and Sacagawea folders, in addition to $5 worth of cent rolls.
I didn't wrap the cents and they tore through those trying to fill holes in the folders I got them this summer. Everything else was wrapped and they will open those Christmas Day. My cousin sent me video and pictures and they seemed legitimately excited.
Finally, the proud owner of said coin
It has been a long time coming, and I am still on the verge of hyperventilation, but I own it now. Took a little wheelin and dealin', but I have it. Mind you, it's not too often I can ever find one at such an incredible price. I am just happy, and it's a Merry Christmas to me! (Please, no grinches to rain on my parade. It would be much appreciated)

1673 halfpenny, obverse
Here is the obverse to the halfpenny posted yeaterday. At this early stage of copper coin production, this is close to as good as it gets for strike and design detail.Quality control in this issue was next to non existent for a few reasons.
This is last post for the year so I would like to wish everyone Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays.

1673 halfpenny reverse
Here is an example of a Charles II halfpenny from 1673. These pices were usually poorly produced so to get one with even this knd of detail is good. As was the case with the farthings, the reverse depicts Britannia, and may be an actual depiction of a mistress of the king.

didn't know Silver Eagles came in two sets?
Two questions here. First the coin and it's label description. Were the eagles available in a mint set and 25th anniversary set in 2011. With all the back and forth about the PCGS no more. Can one buy stock in NGC? Is it on the Stock market?
Just me being silly I guess.
Happy holidays to everyone.
Recovering from my 3rd back surgery, doing ok.

Besides world coins, tokens, and medals based on a particular theme, my primary area of numismatic interest is in United States coins. This past year though I have delved into an area of numismatics that until now was unfamiliar to me. Rather than starting another theme based set, I started a set based on the work of a particular sculptor. I started a collection of coins and medals featuring the artwork of Laura Gardin Fraser.
While I was somewhat familiar with the coins attributed to Laura Ga
Think of it from a business point of view ...
Question to everyone regarding PCGS coins in the registry. Is it fair to expect NGC to cover the costs of maintaining a database on PCGS inventory? I mean, of the 6 million or so graded PCGS coins, I'd imagine that NGC needs to manually add each coin to their registry OR they have developed a complicated computer algorithm to do this. I would imagine that the costs of this are growing and it is back logging other NGC registry work. This might h
Found some great coins
Good morning, everyone. So as you know, I work at a bank and enjoy the amount of cash that I have access to. This week was particularly fun. On Tuesday, I had to open a box of nickels, so I opened the flaps and looked at the coins at the end of that roll. Nothing. I then flipped the box over, lifted it and started examining the coins on the other end of the rolls. Wouldn't you know it, I saw a big P staring at me. I don't remember the year, because the coin is dow
NGC REGISTRY NO LONGER TO ACCEPT PCGS COINS?
Maybe it's just that I haven't looked hard enough but I haven't seen much of a reaction to Marc's Saltzberg's announcement a few weeks ago that, beginning in January, the NGC will no longer accept coins graded by PCGS in their Registry. I think it's an atrocious idea---a disservice to collectors and injurious to NGC itself.
The switch may not mean much to collectors of modern and some foreign sets, but it will effectively wipe out active Registry
A Trade Dollar
Here is an example of a British Trade Dollar, minted from 1895-1935 and used mostly in trade with China, although also used elsewhere in Asia.It has over 3/4 ounce of silver in it and became a recognized medium of exchange in China after its introduction.
the origins of the trade dollar may be in the Spanish pieces of eight that were minted earlier in the Spanish empire.
Other countries, including the United States, had their own version of Trade Dollars for a similar purpo
Pretty cool.
Because it has been getting harder to find nice examples of the few coins I still need to finish my primary set of Liberty Seated Half Dimes, I have started collecting interesting varieties. This has been an enjoyable addition to my collecting habit.
Part of this new pursuit is simply gathering information on the varieties. As part of that effort I have been reading "A Guide Book of Liberty Seated Silver Coins" by Q. David Bowers. While on the 1840-O No Drapery entry, I was oddl

Can we find a way to increase the interest for collecting ancient coins?
I just sent David Vagi an e-mail expressing my disappointment at the low parturition rate in the formation of Ancient Custom Sets, only 83 sets after several years (88 sets are shown but five have nothing to do with ancients and should be culled).
I am a recent convert to collecting ancient coins, I started the year NGC started certifying these coins. And my custom set is pretty meager in that after all this time it con
To increase the scope and variety of the themed set.
I have decided one of my new parameters for my 2017 collecting. The Bear-coin themed Custom Set has been a lot of fun and there are still quite a few available to add to set the set that I have seen on World Coin sellers websites and ebay- but unless I want another 100 variations of pandas or polar bears ( or decide to add the koalas as bears) there is not a lot of variety. One thing I enjoy is finding the coins from diverse nations so that
Reflection
As we work our way toward the end of 2016, the polls have closed so to speak, for the Registry Awards. Good luck to everyone with their competitive sets!
I look back at my collecting year and it has been a good one. I pushed my Morgan Dollar collection over 25% complete and am down to my last 3 coins in my Jefferson Proof collection. I have recently added a few coins to my Type Set and am enjoying buying coins for it that are outside what I am normally collecting.

I had a GREAT year!
Friends, The year ended up pretty nice this year with all my State Quarter submissions. I helped a couple sets and also completed my set. Of course I sold around 6 keepers to help others complete their state quarter set but I can always make more. Next year is already in the plans for some great submissions. I have silver dime varieties, modern commemorative dollars - MS, and of course another state quarter submission at NGC now to start the beginning of the new coin year
1911 Proof Set
Here is an intact, pretty much FDC 1911 proof set. This was purchased raw in England and then sent to NGC for grading. One pice came back PR 65 and the rest higher than that. At least one in 67.
But what grabbed me is the uniform great quality and toning, clearly an original set kept together.
I cant say I know all that much abour Us coinage but I doubt you could buy say a single proof Barber piece, from the same period, in similar condition for what you would pay for a set
Submitted a 1982 for grading
After submitting a 1982 to NGC I received the coin back and it was given the grade of MS65 with the triple die variety. When I initially looked at the coin i assumed it was a double die as i only glanced at it. After the grading I noticed the tripling that NGC saw under the #1 on the date. As I have stated previously, I am sure there will be more varieties in this series as more collectors start looking for them.
Over the past 2 years here are the new varieties
The Mexico City "klippe" issues of 1732-1734
With the royal decree of 18 September 1728, Philip V initiated a radical change in the production of silver coins in Spain's colonies. By 1732, the Mexico City mint would issue the Americas' first milled coins that would become the world's preeminent trade dollar for the next century.
Such a change from the earlier hammered "cobs" did not come with out some difficulties in reaching normal quotas. The new processes instituted machinery for rolli
Please review Dan Hughes' Set
Dear set judges,
I request that you review, and I would like to nominate, Dan Hughes' set: Canada > Commemorative > S$20 Proof, 1985-2016, Complete set for BEST WORLD SET. With approximately 360 coins in the set, it is one of the larger sets one may attempt to acquire in the World Sets series. I am competing with Dan in a number of sets (including this one), and he is a fierce competitor. He has unparalleled dedication to this hobby, and owns many of th
Did I miss something?!
I was on Ebay shopping for Proof sets for my Goddaughter and her sister. Her sister was born in 2012 and proof sets are going for $100+ Did I miss something? Are the Presidential Dollars made with gold, or did these not sell in any sort of quantity from the mint in 2012?
