A good start for 2017

Adjusting to new rules. Friends, Well, The new year started with adjustments made to fit in sorta speak. A few posts started on no more PCGS coins have been adding up of which I don't get into as I don't do much accusations with not knowing the full truth behind the smoke screen. The posts read like women in a salon talking about yesterdays dramatic soap opera. So with that said I have sent all my sales and trade set PCGS coins off to new collectors that do not build sets here in the cl

My Icelandic Kingdom Era Collection

I Can't believe It I was checking out a certification number tonight and noticed that the Register Awards where given out on the 6th while I was away on vacation which I had forgotten all about. As I scrolled down reading about the sets that was honored this year and to my complete shock to say the least I seen my set being one of the five that was awarded NGC Registry Best World Sets. I had to look again to make sure that what I was really reading was in fact what I was reading. I never ever

My First PCGS Non-Registry Coin

It had to happen sooner or later. One of the other coins I "won" in the Heritage FUN auctions was an addition to my set of proof Liberty Seated Half Dimes, 1858-1873. It fills the 1859 slot in my collection, but not in the NGC Registry. It is graded PR64CAM by PCGS, and is therefore not eligible. It also has a green CAC sticker. This is my first higher dollar purchase that will not be in the registry. I have not been in the PCGS Registry, and have no plans to get involved with that. Why woul

RMW Collection of England and Great Britain

A newbie Here is a proof 1746 British halfcrown in NGC 66 star, just purchased. This is one of the best examples of only 100 made, originally in 4 piece sets. It is now a companion piece to my 1746 proof shilling A belated Happy New Year to everyone. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Wrapping up 2016...

Didn't quite go how I'd hoped but it could have been a lot worse. Tragically in mid-September the downturn in the price of oil hit home and I got laid off with about a dozen other people at the company I worked with. The company had about 90 employees so in context laying off a dozen people is a pretty big deal. It wasn't the end of the world. We'd known for a while that it could happen so we'd been reducing expenses and trying to build savings and there's always unemployment while that lasts

It's Not a Half Dime!

Addition to Type Collection... I had been full of anticipation heading into Heritage's auction sessions associated with the FUN show. I was fully expecting to add another ex-Gardner half dime to my collection. Alas, someone else wanted it more... Not to worry, though. I had other coins in mind. In addition to the series set building that has been my primary numismatic activity, I occasionally add to my type collection. In this case, it wasn't one of those pesky little half dimes. It's a whol

About a Century Old

In the spare penny tray One of the secondary collecting goals that I've had, but never put any effort (i.e., $$$) into, is every year to add a 100 year old coin and a 200 year old coin to my collection. The higher priority goals simply took all the money, and I haven't had the time to search for and research those "century" coins. This past Saturday my wife and I made our annual trip to visit my mother at Christmas-time, in Bethlehem, PA. The tradition is for us to chat for awhile and take

Insanity at the Mints

How crazy are the mints? This journal is posted with the context of modern silver bullion coin issues Not content with just a regular version of the normal coin, I am calling out the mints by the amount and varieties of bullion coins they make in a given year. 1. BU (brilliant uncirculated) or MS (Mint State) or business strikes 2. Proof strikes 3. Privy Marks 4. Burnished 5. Reverse Proof 6. Hologram 7. Colored 8. Gilded 9. Micro Engraved 10. Non-round shaped coins 11

A Simply Beautiful Coin Design

another "setless" purchase As I have posted and written about over the years, sometimes I make a purchase for the simple reason that I love beautiful coins. There is no "collecting" involved as there is no higher goal than ownership and enjoyment. I got pretty lucky with this purchase also. The British Virgin Island bullion coin is an attractive design and I purchased the silver addition some months ago for a small case I have with ungraded, large silver coins. The gold gilt with rhodium fin

A Game That People Pay

Happy New Year 2017! Happy New Year 2017! It looks like it is going to be an exciting year for modern silver collector like me, with mints around the world racing to release as many varieties of their main coin series as possible. Cue in the RCM, with a record issue of privy marked maple leaves released (at least 8) in 2016. Seems that if you can think about it, they will privy mark it on their maple! So let's see what they are going to stamp this year. Which brings me back to the title of t

A Coin of Immense Sentimental Value

The story of this coin starts at work on a summer afternoon in Wisconsin. Working at various cell sites throughout the region, I occasionally have the opportunity to observe different kinds of wildlife. On one of those occasions, I heard what I though to be a hummingbird fly by my ear only to find that it was a large praying mantis. Immediately, I had noticed that the praying mantis had landed on the chain link fence surrounding the cell site. I have seen praying mantis's before but this bug w

Awesome Gem Belgian Congo Error

Who needs an extra hole? 1888 1 Centime Double Hole Punch Error PCGS MS66RB. A tremendously cool error in top notch grade. Likely a unique error. It does show that the holes were punched after the coins were struck. This is a magnificent treasure that will now grace my Belgian Congo collection, where it will find good company with other rarities and gems. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 2017 Goals

Going To Finish Some Sets Hello everyone. I hope you all had a great Christmas. I got some proof sets from family members, to add to my collection, so I was very happy. In the coming year, I am looking to put a bow on some of the sets I haven't worked on in awhile. Here are my goals for 2017: 1. Finish my Ike set. 2. Finish my Washington quarter set (1932 - 1964) 3. Finish my Presidential proof set, even though I hate that the mint started making reverse proofs at the end of the

The mints of the world and their silver 1 oz coins My main coin collecting theme is world modern 1 oz ASW coins, which arguably was started by the US Mint 1986 Silver Eagle, followed by the Perth Mint, RCM, RAM, China Mint, Russia Mint, Pobjoy Mint, etc. soon after. Older series like the Mexican Onza existed before but those coins were of inferior strikes which they then transformed to the Libertad series. Very generous PCGS crossover special

Very good deal. Will be sending all my PCGS coins. Dear Valued NGC Member: Many NGC Registry participants have asked for a discounted CrossOver special so that they could make their sets contain only NGC-certified coins. Based on this feedback, NGC has developed a CrossOver promotion to offer significant savings to these collectors. For a limited time, PCGS-certified coins that are currently registered to an NGC Registry set may be submitted to NGC for the discounted CrossOver special.
