Petition For Change

Time to redesign our coinage Hello everyone. I wanted to see if I could get your support for a change to our coinage. As President Roosevelt did in 1907, I think it is time to redesign our circulating coinage. The $10 bill is going to feature a woman in 2020, but it will share circulation with the Hamilton $10 bill. In an effort to show progressiveness in both diversity and women's equality in America, I propose that the coins from the cent to the half dollar be redesigned back to the cla

RMW Collection of England and Great Britain: Hammered Coins

A selection of coins produced in England prior to the permanent establishment of milled coinage in 1662 This part of the collection will be a work in progress but the idea will be to obtain at least one piece for every English monarch from Aethelstan onward. there are also a couple of pieces minted prior to that which have not been graded by NGC. Attached in the picture is an Edward the Confessor penny, currently slabbed by PCGS and as such not part of this set but owned by me. To see o

Meanwhile Behind the Scenes...

When it comes to collecting coins over the course of a year, I typically focus on only one segment of my collection at a time. For instance, three years ago it was Morgan and Eisenhower dollars, two years ago it was my custom set, The Use of Seated Imagery in Numismatics, last year it was completing and upgrading my Dansco 7070 type set, and this year it's my new custom set, The Coins and Medals of Laura Gardin Fraser. Lately Ive written much about my new custom set because it consumes most of

Letting one go for once.

Not often that I sell a coin I sent off for grading myself. I've never been one to make a lot of coin submissions. Generally I'm happier to just buy the coin already graded. I'm sure that cuts me out of some potential steals and great deals but it's just what's worked best for me. I've never been much of a risk taker and ultimately there are elements of risk in every coin submission, not all of which are the ones you suspect. One of the few times I sent in a submission the postal service was n

Silver Stacking? Dragon? Nah... Right?

The various forms and opinions on precious metal obsession. So I've referenced previously that I've been picking up some silver bullion lately to complement the government issued graded bullion I amassing before (and probably will again soon). At this point I think the horde of silver bars (below) outweighs all the graded silver in terms of silver weight. Which group is more valuable I guess would be a matter for some debate. I've spent some time recently in the "Silverbugs" reddit -- I foun

The Journey Continues...

Pleased With Morgan Results For the time being, I have started sending in some of my US coins for certification opposed to the world coins I have sent in the past. I just got the cert report on a handful of my Morgans I sent in and as a result, I am motivated to send in more. I had been carrying these on the books as MS60 but was thrilled that many of them graded higher. 001 1878 8TF S$1 UNC DETAILS IMPROPERLY CLEANED 002 1882 CC S$1 MS 63 003 1883 CC S$1 MS 63 004 1884 CC

ADVICE ABOUT SAFES

Broke down and got a safe Well the bank fees for safe deposit boxes have been too much. Got a fire safe. Stack-on is the brand. Got the rechargeable de-humidifyer and light. Question is this. Does the carpet in the safe, dehumidifyer and lights have PVC's or anything like that? I know I should have done better home work on it but my research skills are very minimal. Plus it's too late now. It is bolted to the floor and installed. Just need to get to the bank and empty out the vault. F

Meeting the competition.

It's a small world sometimes. I don't know if I've ever mentioned/discussed this before -- looking back I don't think I have. If I have I'll apologize to anyone I bore but this came to mind when I was looking through the registry today... The 1932 mint set that I built with my step-father, several years ago now, has enjoyed several years at the top of the NGC registry rankings. Before we built our set another set had dominated the category for 3 years. You can still see Penny Man's set in th

Since we were here last... and thoughts on anti-counterfeiting measures

Here's the brief run-down on the last 10 months, and some thoughts on what I've been seeing lately in silver bars. I posted in early June 2015, a couple of months away from graduating, still looking for a job, etc. I found out about 6 weeks later that my wife was pregnant in mid-July, still didn't have a job offer at that point. As graduation approached I agreed to take a post-doc position for a while and teach a class in the Fall semester. It wasn't really where I wanted to be and while th

Introducing Coins To My Second Cousins

A good start. We had a housewarming today, for the house my wife and I bought in January. My cousin David and his wife Angela were there with their two kids. When the kids looked like they were getting bored, I pulled out the Lincoln coin folders I had gotten them. I wasn't exactly sure how to introduce it, so I asked, "Do you want to see something cool?" They thought it was cool when I pulled out the rolls of cents. We layed down in the floor (something my back cursed me out for late

So this is Benjamin

2 weeks old today. So this (picture below) is Benjamin, my first son. I found out that he was coming about 6 weeks after that last journal entry and he completely changed my plans and priorities heading into this year. He was born on the 26th of March weighing 7 lbs 12 ounces, 19.5 inches long. Now he's already over 8 pounds. I've been amassing a few 10 ounce silver bars in the last 10 months to build up a little silver bullion independent/apart from my 1 ounce rounds that I love so much. Wh

EBAY-the Good and Bad

Unchecked shill bidding but the occasional bargain. I still shop on ebay for coins. I rarely buy a raw coin unless it is in mint packaging and I don't buy from overseas. I also don't chase my bids. When I first started using ebay it was more honest and more auction oriented as opposed to the massive ebay stores and BIN items. So in the beginning it would be worth it to low ball bid something to have it on your watchlist and then try and snipe it with a late bid--it was part of the game and a

Always Looking for MORE!!

Buy, Sell, Trade --- I need MORE raw coins!! Friends, As usual I do a post every year looking to get your raw mint sets, mint package material, and rolls of coins. I have run out of stuff to search through and looking for anything you might have in a box, dresser, or on a shelf. I build albums complete and sell them to young and old collectors wanting them. Mostly 1940 to date coins including Modern Commemorative and business strike sets. If you have a cluster of rolls or mint sets sitti

Making 58's Part 2

Part 2 hi coinman.... to address your point, but for the sake of brevity, 'I put the coins in my pocket'...should have included every thing you mentioned....I wasn't brutal but the coins saw a lot of attention... I was not trying to lower coins incrementally, I started with coins that graded the 64 - 66 spread most fell in....and as JTO stated....the 58 has the appearance of a higher grade with high point wear or 'breaking the luster'....every coin I submitted had high point luster 'broken

Good Bye Lucky 13 Part 2

Part 2 @ yehrah, I tried that joke on Erin, good thing she didn't hear me... Re the Morgan Set: When I said I couldn't work the set anymore, I meant I could not afford upgrades or the 1893 S (AU55 or 58) to my Morgan set, basically all are 5 figure purchases each. Rick says it well, one has to find series and budgets that match. Now, the Morgans will fund projects or buy whatever we need as I have decided to slow down and smell more roses in my business life. I am more a fan of clas
