Very Rare Sierra Leone Die Trial

Finally got it graded. I finally had this very rare obverse die trial of this cool Sierra Leone Company token graded. I tried to have it graded by NGC a few years ago and they sent it back stating that they don't grade these coins any longer. (Funny how my regular issue piece of this type was graded by them). So off to PCGS a month or two ago and now it resides in a nice holder and appropriately graded as MS63RB. A very cool addition to my small Sierra Leone Company collection. It's small

Type Set

Finally Started Good evening, everyone. It has been awhile since I have posted a journal. I hope everyone is well.       I received an email from NGC last week stating that if I didn't add any coins to my 20th Century Type Set, it would be deleted. I registered the set, but I had a hard time starting it, because I wasn't sure exactly how I wanted to go about collecting it. Did I want all the same grade? Same grade range? I created a case of Paralysis By Analysis.       Well,

Challenging San Francisco Wartime Walker

A Crown Jewel for my Short Set I am having such a wonderful time just happily filling in my Walker Date Set and my Walker Short Set. It is sooo much fun with very little monetary outlay.       BUT the S minted coins of the 1940s are NOT as easy as one might think that they are and they offer QUITE the challenge. I have been searching for about a year now, already. IMHO the 1942-S is the MOST difficult coin to find with a decent strike and is more difficult than even the 1941-S AND th

RCM Flooding the Collector Coin Market

Does anyone else feel that the Royal Canadian Mint is flooding the collector coin market? The Royal Canadian Mint has been issuing 100s of collector coins since 2005, some of them quite questionable as to what they are even commemorating. Superman, wolves, cougars, obscure legends/stories, random animals, buildings, leaves and trees, hockey logos, snowflakes ... I mean it is all a little ridiculous. I think this is eroding collector value, as many collectors feel disillusioned with everythin

Sacs and President Dollars

Why??? I don't really know but that will be the next venture on my list!! Friends,   I have enjoyed so many new coins added to each set this year but with the new submission thoughts I have decided to run with the dollar pieces of the 21'st century. My Sac set is seeming to need the most interest in ranks so I am going to try for a few nice holders. I have also ordered a group of rolls for my State Quarter set that will get that set closer to completion.   Looks like a fun and intere

The Next Big GSA Price Movement

The 1890-CC has taken a rocket like ride over the past year! I've been unsuccessfully trying to buy a second 1890-CC GSA Hoard in NGC MS63 or higher for about 13 months! The prices have shot through the roof and people are still holding on to them!               What is next?I can honestly tell you, I have no idea. And, neither does anyone else. If these things could easily be predicted, we'd all be rich. But, we aren't!There are some things about the 1890-CC that help to explain

ATTEMPTING THE IMPOSSIBLE

Building an all MS69 Canada Maple Leaf Bullion Set for 5 years now. For the past 5 years, I have been attempting to build an all MS69 Canada Maple Leaf Bullion set. I am very close, and will be sending a few PCGS coins to NGC for crossover. A few pickups from APMEX are on their way ... but nonetheless, this has proved to be an EXTREMELY difficult task.       Here is a link to the set:       http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=154543

It's time to retire

Something I didn't really think I'd say at 34...... Hello all,   I haven't been on here in quite a while......lots of things have changed in my life very quickly over the past month and a half, and it's caused me to re-evaluate some of the things I've been doing in my life up to this point. It hasn't been anything really horrible, these changes. I'm not sick, nor is anyone in my family, thank God! Things are just new and different, mostly in a good way.       One of the things I've

Registry Points for Custom Sets

? I was hoping someone could explain to me the reason why coins in Custom Sets receive no Registry Points? I have invested some serious time, money and effort into assembling a pretty impressive collection of silver coinage in my custom set yet I have no registry points or ranking to show for it!               http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=14077 To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Whitman Winter Expo

For grading or new slab I am going to Baltimore Convention Center on 30 Oct. I have never been to a coin show. I would like to know how the process goes for re-slabbing coins. I have about 30 with the old style. Is there a discount for so many? Must I stay for the 3 days? Do they do them overnight (re-slabbibng)? Must I do the Early Bird Registration? Does the registration count for my whole family? Here is a Picture with me and Joe when I was young on a Submarine. To see old comme

I am curious as to just how badly inaccurate the census and other data are.

I recently broke out about 20 or so coins and medals from NGC as well as PCGS holders. All were graded without 'details' and were fine except for the fact that they were behind a piece of plastic, which I can not stand. Out of all of those that were freed from the plastic vault, this is one example and how it further increases the inaccuracy of the census data.               I would imagine that if NGC and various other TPG companies would wish to have more accurate data on hand, the

NGC MS67 1943 D Lincoln Wheat Ear cent CAC certified Hi Everyone. With addition of this coin and a few others I have climbed back into the top 50 in the 34-58 Lincoln Wheat Ear cent circulation issued registry sets. Some of you that follow me know that I did have this particular set as high as #3 a few years back. I made a decision at that time too sell the majority of that set off too pursue my 59-Date set. There were some in that set that I that I did have some sellers remorse but sometim

High Grade Belgian Congo

Top Graded date! I just bought a lovely 1919 5 Centimes graded PCGS MS67! Coins from this country very rarely reach this basically astronomical grade, unless they are modern of course. In fact, not counting modern proofs, my collection only consists of 4 coins graded 67 with none higher and none to my knowledge graded higher by either NGC or PCGS. Please take a look at my wonderful Belgian Congo collections (broken up into 2 parts because of prior size restrictions). I am always trying to c

Who like this new e-Bay feature on registry sets??

e-Bay feature Ask me, the new e-Bay "feature" on the right hand side of registry set pages is an unnecessary irritant. Takes forever to load, the page "moves" while you're trying to click onto a specific coin in a set, if you accidentally pass your mouse over a "Buy it Now," the e-Bay display stays there, etc. All-in-all this feature causes delays while looking at registry sets and detracts from the enjoyment. It's not as if there is a wonderland of coins for sale either. Most/all of the tim

NGC MS67RD 1946 D Lincoln Wheat Ear cent

Another CAC certified coin Hi Everyone. About 6 years ago I had a top 5 34-58 Lincoln Wheat Ear circulation set. I sold the majority of that set intact too use the proceeds too pursue other coins. Just started too rebuild this set about 9 months ago. I have been trying too buy coins that I think would pass CAC standards. Out of the 15 coins I have sent in so far 7 have met CAC standards. This NGC MS67RD 1946 D Lincoln Wheat Ear just passed yesterday. Pretty tough too buy a coin from an

An Unlikely Purchase

My latest NEWP is an XF-45 1860-O Seated Liberty Dollar to upgrade a VF-35 1842 dollar from my collection. What makes this purchase unlikely is that I was not looking to add a new Seated Liberty Dollar to my collection nor was I looking to upgrade the one that I currently own. However, while I was browsing a dealers listing looking for other coins, this coin kind of swept me away.       What struck me about this coin was its clean original surfaces, the boldness of its devices, and light

2014 Clad High Relief Kennedy Low Grades and High Auctions

2014 Kennedy D SP69 Auction hits 2,550.00 on Ebay I purchased my 5 sets of clad Kennedy's and bought two sets at the ANA Chicago show. I was very lucky to get a 2014 P SP69 and a D SP68 from NGC. I was really surprised to see how low the grades were in the population report.       Acorrding to NGC's population report there are only 18 sp69's with a P mint mark and only 11 sp69's with a D mint mark. I had a tough time finding this population report because they are under the PF sets.

Find of the year

WOW What's up guy and girls. So my parents went to visit my grandmother for a couple weeks. Got back yesterday. Mom hands me a mason jar full of pennys. I go through them pulling the coppers, 99.9% are all commons. I got 2 wheeties, and about $1.50 in coppers. But about half way through i see a indian head. I think to my self cool but nothing special. Pick it up and it's a 1909. So there's a chance. Flip it over and there is a beautiful S at the bottom of the reverse. I just found a 1909 S ind
