NGC REQUEST: 1971 Dahomey Proof Set

NGC REQUEST: 1971 Dahomey Proof Set The coins of the 1971 Proof Dahomey Set have been exploding in value over the past 5 years. In 2009, I sold the 500 Franc coin in NGC PF67 for $80. They are now selling for almost $500 in that grade. The trois presidents gold coin just sold for $3800.       Please add this set to the registry. If this is not the correct method of adding sets to the registry, could someone with the knowledge of how to request sets please help me.       All the

Oops another New Orleans notable

The 1839-O half-dollar was the first minted in New Orleans and not Philadelphia! How could I forget the first New Orleans half-dollar. This has always been a favorite of mine. Although many reference books describe the first New Orleans half-dollar as being one of the few 1838 proof issues, current research suggests most if not all, most likely all, were minted in Philadelphia. This has to do with the dye characteristics and the proof quality. As for the re-punched mint mark it turns out t

New Orleans Type Set Finally complete!

Added the last of the New Orleans issues to complete the type set. Finally, I finished my New Orleans type set. Although the registry has a Carson City--one per denomination, a type set, the New Orleans Mint has not been deemed worthy of such a designation. Nevertheless, after completing the Carson City set, I slowly, over several years, worked to complete a New Orleans type set. The Double Eagle was difficult only based on price, the $3 was not bad and the halftime, no stars, was actually

50th Country Milestone!

Just added a coin from the 50th country to my collection! Ironically the 50 centavos coin from the Philippines represents the 50th country in my collection !       [/url] To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

My Journey from Buying Bullion to Collecting GSA Soft Packs

I used to be curious how anyone could pay several hundred or several thousand dollars for something with a $15 melt value? Now, I'm one of the guys I never understood. My story doesn't start with sitting on my dad's lap sorting coins. I didn't inherit my grandpa's box of Dansco albums and partial sets. My father has never collected anything in his entire life. My grandpa would tell you the only thing he's ever collected is calluses.       I, on the other hand, have always had a natural p

2005 WV Die Break @8PM MS66

Only One... I have a 2005 WV die break NGC cert MS66 @8PM...   I see die breaks at 4PM all over the place but I have yet to see one at 8PM.   Has anyone found or know where I can find it as I'd like to sell it but not give it away...   In my registry NGC has "No Price" but on eBay the 4PM's go for around $30-40.   With the rarity or assumed araity, can anyone add any info to help.   Thanks To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New coin with spots graded that way

I just bought this coin and I have one question. My 2014 Baseball Hall Of Fame Coin MS 70 First Release has three spots on it (and I think they are bad). When you look up the cert on http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/index.aspx?CertNumber=3866977-008 you can see two of the spots. My question is do I contact NGC on about this coin (Because it is no 70 when they graded it) or do I contact the person that sold it to me? I wanted this one because it was First Release to match my other one.

Does NGC Certify 1oz Bullion Bars?

I have many rare 1oz bullion bars. Will NGC grade them as genuine? Does anyone know if NGC certifies rare bullion bars? I know they fit into their holders, because the RCM playing card money fits into NGC holders. I would like to have these certified, so that they are in protective holders, rather than in sleeves.       Will they certify/holder them?       Best,   JG To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. My Dahlonega and Stone Mountain GA. Trip

There's Gold in them there hills...... Hi All,       About a week late in posting this entry, but attached are a few pics of the trip.       Visiting Dahlonega was certainly worthwhile. Of note, the Gold Museum now houses a complete Dahlonega Gold collection in addition to a great collection of scales and other mining tools, pics and memorabilia.       The complete Dahlonega gold set was housed in what appeared to be a customized Capital Display holder. Visitors could photo eve

1959 Proof Set

Usually they are disappointing. I purchased a 1959 Proof set for $22.00. I did not really have high expectations. Usually they are stained and poor strikes and a few dings.   This time...wow...I was very impressed and excited.   I didn't waste anytime to submit all five with some others I have been holding on until I had enough to make it worth it.       Here is my prediction:   Penny PF68 (maybe Cameo)   Nickel PF68 (possible PF69)   Dime PF68 (outside chance for Cameo)

The Battle of the Camera

There's nothing worse than to have a nice coin and post BAD pictures of it. I have struggled over the years with taking pictures of my coins. There have been times when I nailed it, but always out of perseverance and simple dumb luck. I'm not the type to apply the Scientific Method. I just get in there and poke around with a stick.               With a little bit of advice from some friends here I started a more systematic approach. Controlling light and the movement

Thats What it Takes

This is a follow up to my last entry called What does it Take? Talking about submissions and getting a Cameo Designation. And a surprise from an ebay purchase I did not even want.Well its been a while since my last entry and I thought I would follow up on the next set of coins I sent in for grading. I think I did a little better picking out the good ones or maybe I just had more good ones to pick from. Here are the results:LineItem Year Mint Mark Variety/Pedigree Denom. Grade001 1961 10C PF 6

New Additions Coming Soon!!!

You snooze ---- You loose!! Friends,   I have been adding some great TOP POP coins to my MODERN sets lately. I don't really make the income to afford these jewels but have been working overtime to get them paid for . It is GREAT to have such friends here that will accept the I.O.U's I needed lately to pull the purchases off and get them loaded.   My computer died this month which I guess -- 8 years is a good life span Working on my wife's laptop --- SUCKS!!! NGC Turn-Around times

Really! When can a customer expect a company to do right by them? When it comes to NGC and their grading times I never know what to expect. I have taken a long lay-off from this society and NGC for this very reason and it hasn't got any better! NGC charges extra exorbitant fees in order to process coins faster but is it really faster. Example, I have one gold Kennedy that I put through as express. This tier is suppose to have a 48 hour turn-around. It currently says three working days on the w

My first ANA World's Fair of Money

And it certainly won't be my last. I'm already planning for next year. As a member of the Philippine Collectors Forum (PCF), I've wanted to attend the annual ANA show for many years since this is where the PCF holds its annual meeting. The stars aligned, and this year I was finally able to make everything work out. I spent two and a half days at the show and could easily have added another day. Surprisingly, the highlight for me was not the coins. It was the people!       I planned i

1901 $20 NGC MS62 Prooflike

One of Only Three 1901 Double Eagles Designated Prooflike by NGC. With each interesting new acquisition for the Grandview Collection of Liberty Double Eagles in 2014, I plan to describe the coin and relevant background information with a journal post.       If you have seen my Registry set of Liberty Double Eagles, you probably know that I prefer prooflike examples over coins with typical frosty surfaces. When turning a PL coin under a light, the reflective fields and contrasting devi

Custom Set Update

I have no idea the last time I updated this one. I had a look at the custom set that I created for the Lincoln Satins today. It's been some time since I paid it any heed. It has been tucked behind that little tab for years. It was filled with 67's, 68's and a few MS69's. There was even a 66 in there.   I have upgraded all but the 2010's to MS69, most of which are top populations.   Updating it was somewhat of an epiphany. I have spent years putting the set together, but somehow I forgot

FACTORY SECONDS, ALAS, ALAS.

THANKS YEP, ALL I WAS TRYING TO DO WAS SAVE SOME BUCKS BY SUBMITTING THEM MYSELF, AND AFTER NO SUCCESS WITH INDIVIDUAL COINS ONE AT A TIME, I DECIDED SUCCESS MUST BE IN NUMBERS RIGHT? GUESS I WAS WRONG.   I NEVER HAD COLLECTED CERTIFIED COINS UNTIL EARLY IN 2010. OTHERWISE, SINCE THE EARLY SIXTIES, MAYBE LATE FIFTIES I COLLECTED ONLY CIRCULATED COINS. BUT, THAT IS THE WAY IT GOES.   THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT MR. W. I APPRECIATE IT. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here.

FACTORY SECONDS?

DO THE BIG GUYS ON THE BLOCK I.E. AUTHORIZED PURCHASERS, INTERNET SELLERS, AND BIG STORES GET THE BEST COINS FIRST? I guess this is my time to vent. I bought 14 of the baseball hall of fame coins from the Mint. I got through very reasonably early on the first day of sale. I thought I would get my coins rather early because of that. But every day the date for delivery kept getting pushed farther and farther back. I bought 14, 7 ea. of the proof and unc. in hopes of finding 5 to send in for

Free gift if you realize over $ on your submission Friends,       I had the funniest e-mail from Stack's today. Seems if you consign and sell over a certain point price wise --- they will give you a free coin!! HaHa               Now don't get me wrong --- FREE coins are GREAT --- BUT if I am selling ----       WHY??? in the world would I want a free coin for selling above their price tier??       Seems a break in costs would be more effective!!
