Another Hoard Consignment

and "hoard" may truly be the most apt word for this collection I have written over the years about several large coin collections that have fallen into my hands to convert to spendable money for the inheritors. Once also, a friend's parents from my church asked me to estimate-and then ultimately purchased several cardboard boxes of mixed circulated coins. Hoard one had 4 large rubbermade toolboxes and I shared great deals with my old friends at Trading slabs--rons, sam/coindude, antthe, monk

If At First You Don't Succeed, Try, Try, Again!

The day I stop learning or wanting to learn is the day I need to do something else. I have enjoyed the many responses to my last post about an 1870 half-dime I recently purchased. I particularly liked the comments concerning the photographs I took of the coin. That said, I want to personally thank users wdrop, Walkerfan, and RWB for their input. There are many people on these boards whose opinions and experience I greatly respect. If they say people listen when EF Hutton speaks, I listen whe

The Ugly Truth About 8 Reales

Beware the counterfeits, unofficial restrikes and modern forgeries! It's only natural that the world's most popular coins are the target of fraud. For the 8 reales, this has been a problem for over 200 years. Counterfeits, meaning those struck in the same time frame as the genuine issue, used less silver so that the counterfeiter gained by the difference in precious metal. Unofficial restrikes were produced after the genuine issue, were mostly faithful to design as well as silver content,

My Latest NEWP and Shes a Dandy!

I believe that this half-dime combines both eye appeal and value. As such it is a perfect candidate for my 7070 type set. Most of you that follow me know that among other things Im a type coin collector. Well My latest new purchase for that set is a single year 1837 no-stars/small-date PCGS AU-55 half-dime. With this coin I believe that I balance eye appeal and value which are now the prime objective for this set. Furthermore, this coin is as close to a Gobrecht Dollar as I am likely to come e

Question about an auction house

Greatcollections has anyone here used them? Hello Fellow collectors, And a very happy 4th of July.... I have many doubles and coins with no place in my collection. so I find myself needing to sell these coins at the highest possible price. I was thinking of sending them off to greatcollections on consignment as I don't have the time to type the list of coins I have for sale and post them here. My main question is has anyone here ever used this company to sell or buy coins? any comme

Beautiful Thaler from Baltimore

I bought, sold and traded at my first coin convention and I'm darn sure the dealers got the better bargain, but I came away with my shirt and two new coins for my small but growing early modern world silver dollar set. I didn't attend any auctions and only visited for a few hours on Saturday morning but I got most of my goals accomplished. My main purpose was to get an opinion on a raw 1860 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar that I won on Ebay. After showing it around I felt confident enough to se

SLOW!!!

Coins are not moving like the winter months!! Friends, I have sold a few coins on my "Six Mile Rick" page and purchased many!! The new additions kinda get my 1940 to date MS and PF sets at around 33% complete. I look at the ordeal as a grand jig saw puzzle!! Don't know what started the fiasco but still driving in the completion direction. Will be happy when I get to the pre 1940's to get some new types!! OK I am looking for feedback from those of you that submit ancient coins for certification

Has NGC Ancients become the Black Hole of Calcutta? On May 16 a submittal of mine arrived at NGC. Those of you that follow your submittal through NGC know that the first step in the process is simply acknowledgement that you submittal arrive and the number of coins match the number on the order form. The next step is verification of the submittal. This step can be quick or take time based on the number of coins and how correct you were in providing info on each coin. Once this step is compl

MId Year - Coin Goals check

How is everybody doing against their collecting goals ? I am a "planner", others may not budget and target goals to the extent I do, so with tomorrow the last day of June, for me, its time to make sure basically on-track with annual goals. Right now I'm way ahead overall, only behind on my Buffalo Set and my 19th century Type Set. My Flying Eagle Cent variety set also stagnant as is my small cent pattern custom set, but these not the highest priority, and I will wait for opportunities down

Slow Baltimore Show

The Baltimore show did not seem very lively this time. As usual, I skipped out on work a bit to attend some of the Baltimore coin show on Friday. Having just secured a pricey coin from the Gardner Collection, I was not anticipating any more purchases, but wanted to look around and to attend the Liberty Seated Collectors Club meeting.       The LSCC meeting started at 9AM, so that was up first. I had figured that Mr. Gardner might be there, seeing as he does not live too far away, and has

That one Coin.......

For the Lincoln Lover in us all.... It all started in 1959 as I played at the base of a fire escape at the elementary school that was across the street from where we lived in Union South Carolina. I was digging in the sand and found two pennies. One a normal Wheat ear and then to my surprise I found a penny with a different reverse on it.....the new memorial reverse. So I started, as most of us do, collecting Lincoln Cents (or pennies as I called them at that time). Over the years my colle

A Tale of Two Dimes

One is a low pop and the other is a Pop 2!! Hello everyone! This has been a work in progress over the last several months. No, I don't collect dimes. So why two dimes? Well these are members of my #1 1947 Mint Set honoring my Mom, the Linda C. Prescott Birth Year Mint Set. With Paul selling several of his coins in this set, I have now moved to lead by more than 8300 points with these two additions. With upgrades becoming both expensive and scarce, I turned to my fellow participants in t

Gardner Collection Pick-Up

The Eugene H. Gardner Collection (yeoldeone here on the NGC Registry) Part 1 sale at Heritage brings $19.6 million The Gardner collection may be the finest collection of US silver coinage ever assembled. Roughly one third of it was sold this past Monday in NYC by Heritage. I was looking at the 1829 large cent as a potential upgrade, and of course, at the Liberty Seated Half Dimes. I came away with one coin: the 1864 half dime, NGC graded MS67 and CAC approved. Once I actually pay for it, it

NGC MS67RD 1946 Lincoln Wheat Ear cent lst CAC Sticker

1st one graded MS67RD for this year Hi Everyone. Please be respectful as far as your thoughts and comments on CAC. I recently had some coins sent off too CAC by a fellow CS member for me. They were all Lincoln Wheat Ear cents between 1934-1958. My NGC MS67RD 1946 Lincoln Wheat Ear cent filled in I believe the last vacant slot that did not have a coin sticker at MS67RD between 1934-1958. They are tough on Lincolns. I had a few more that sticker as well between 34-58. Kind of cool too fil

Update: The Kennedy Appreciation Medal

Medal with a Presidential provenance... Updated 06/28/2014 The Kennedy Appreciation Medal was struck in 1962. Only 300 were minted at the US Mint in Philadelphia. The medal was first used in 1963 during Kennedy's trip to Ireland. I am still performing research on the Kennedy appreciation medal. If you have any original source information (US Mint or White House) or good leads, I would greatly appreciate it. To the best of my knowledge, only one catalog reference (K-62-1) is made (The Me

When is a set complete?

100% filled or when upgrades are finished? For several months I had almost had my 32-64 quarter set competed, but I had one open slot- the 1950 D/S. I had been looking for a couple of months before I finally found one that I liked. I probably overpaid at about 85% of FMV, but it was a nice coin in AU53 that fit well with my set. The problem now is my 1950 S/D in VF details became a hole filler. A couple of months ago I thought I was in the running for a PCGS AU55- it was at $57 dollars with

GSA Set

Tough set - is 100% achievable? GSA Carson City Morgan dollars are an interesting and historically important subset. Other collectors have fairly extensive writeups on the history of the Carson City mint, the silver mines and the GSA sales in the 1970's, and I won't try to repeat them here. I started the GSA subset as part of my Morgan set. My objective with the Morgans was to get as many dates in MS-65 as I can afford (while also limiting the search to nice, appealing examples). I will take Numismatic Potpourri for $10 Vanna

Lots of Summertime Registry Stuff I just returned from a great vacation in the New Hampshire White Mountains. My wife and I hiked a few trails, sipped the local brews (well me, she is hard to get away from the Pinot Grigio), and of course pursued and caught a bunch native wild brookies on the fly, they are not big but lots of fun on a 3 wt. On to coins, and to remember the 2000 NH state Quarter, I have attached a pic of where the Old Man in The Mountain once stood, (he fell in 2003) watchful

Continental dollar on Ebay

Thought better, but could I have been wrong? Sold on Ebay yesterday for $380. I wondered about the pitting first off. Was this environmental damage? I did a little research on this coin and it being struck in pewter, and the others that I did see that did have environmental damage did not look like this. Also, I did ask if there was writing on the side...or the word copy, and the seller said no. But is there a different type of environmental damage that could have caused this? A few years bac
