Usually a coin that only scores 1 Registry point isn't a good thing but.......

Finally tracked down a major Ottoman rarity! Hello all, So, I told myself that when I finally tracked down this coin, I'd become more active on the journal-message board side of things. So here's my newest Ottoman beauty! The 1327 regnal year 7 ( 1915 in Western dating)20 Para had a mintage of 800 coins, split between two different types. My coin is the first type, with the name Reshat next to the Tughra on the obverse. How the mintage exactly breaks down between the two ty

Buying RAW coins to fill holes in sets.

Where to get your values for bidding. Friends, Many dealers subscribe to grey sheet price lists for their monthly values on raw coins and sets. A great magazine that my wife got for me yesterday is great and will help to keep up with monthly values of most raw coins I purchase and sell. It is impossible to keep up with today's value using the red book which is actually outdated when it is released for publishing. March to April values on MS65 coins -- +.11, VF graded coins -- -.49. My beautiful wife

I am a lucky man I went to lunch with my wife this afternoon, a decision I am regretting at the moment, since my stomach isn't feeling so great right now.... As we were talking, I told her that I had planned to start a Buffalo short set, but I am for some reason having trouble finding graded coins from that time frame. She then asked, "is that because the date tends to wear off, since it is one of the higher points on the coin?" How did I get so lucky?   Marcus To see old comments fo

12 Hours = Picture Perfect

Learning the camera, updating the set So today I got my "photo" stuff in the mail. I ordered a couple lights, because turns out I don't have a single portable light source besides a flashlight and a cellphone. I updated 90% of my registry with pictures. If you look through the pictures you will see them go from blurry images to some decent images. I need to go back and retake the fuzzy ones, but tomorrow is another day!!! 1962 D franklin half dollar

My first submission to ncs. Well it had to happen sometime and last week seemed to be the right coin and time. I have a 1962 D franklin half dollar that had a cloudy look to it all over the coin. As it was I believe it could have gotten a ms-61 or maybe 62. with a nice cleaning it might hit a score of MS 65 or higher. which makes it a thousand dollar coin if I get lucky. Does anyone out there know what causes a silver coin to get that white cloudy look to it is there anything I can do to pr

A Silver Commemorative Search

I found more than I needed for sure!! Friends, I was interested in getting a few hard to find Modern Commemorative Silver Dollars. Well the box came open and the full load was surprisingly beautiful. Mint package after mint package full of sets that were Silver and Gold from the first set in 1983 to 2010. I grabbed a few Silver sets that I wanted just a little over melt and I can get some gold if someone is interested in grabbing a few. There was also a few Double Eagles graded MS61 in the

Wild eBay Sales Story...Is it Miracle Money?

So I have to share this with everyone here. I am unable to come up with a logical explanation for this. Maybe just my lucky day?.... I sold a partial U.S. mint set on eBay. The buyer received the set no problem. But he emailed me saying that in addition to the mint set, there were two $50 bills in the envelope. So apparently I accidentally mailed him the mint set plus $100 cash. But here's the kicker... I never use cash. Never. I only use my debit card. So the odds of my having $100 in cash

Please keep my Father in your prayers,

Not much time left, This past Monday my father suffered a stroke. His condition is gradually worsening so he has been moved to Hospice Care. He is just receiving pain medication for comfort and Tylenol for fever. Coin collecting has lost any importance in my life right now. My father is 78 and lived a wonderful life, my mother is 75 and I will be spending a lot more of my time and resources on her. Someday I may return to this great hobby of ours as my father would not want me to stop because

It took me a while!!

I finally have a showcase in a store!! Friends, As I have been selling coins for quite some time I have had a hard time getting in the door to sell at coin shops. Finally a new store opened up locally and they needed someone familiar with coins so I jumped at the chance. Here is a pic of the showcase with a large selection of NGC slabs and other stuff. It was nice to be able to fill a case in the store and talk coins to customers that were interested. Later---Rick To see old comments

The difficult ART of slabbing doubles

Some success at this difficult art of improving grades Today I added a new MS 67 grade to my Costa Rican Cristobal Colon Gold Set. Even though my set has been completed for several years, I have worked hard to improve all the grades. Unfortunately, the coins of this set are not commonly slabbed and the high grades on auctions are scarce. So, I have had to practice the difficult art of slabbing doubles. Many times, I have purchased raw doubles, which I believe might, just might, improve the gra

Something old, Something new, Something Borrowed, Something blue,...

...And a lucky sixpence in her shoe.   We've all heard this before, but did you ever wonder what it means and where it came from? The something old and something new pay homage to the past and to the present. Something borrowed is a reminder to appreciate family and friends in times of need, and blue is the color representing fidelity. The sixpence is intended to bring good luck and financial prosperity to the marriage. This little poem was born in Victorian England and migrated across the Atla

The census on grading? Has anyone seen or know how the new baseball commemorative gold and silver coins are running as far as the grading census? Just curious, I lucked out and was able to place my order before they sold out. I have all 70's in my collections, and was curious as to how they will grade when I get them.(anyone) To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Unintended Funny

Courtesy of my brother My brother was over one day when a coin came in for me; a proof Jefferson nickel. I showed it to him and he says , "So what is your collection worth? $35?" I stopped for a second and asked him if he was referring to the face value. He laughs and replies, yes. I had never thought about it before, but after 8+ years of collecting, my collection is worth less than $200. . It is always interesting to get a different point of view on something. Happy collecting, everyone!

A rare Indian

A sales piece on the run!! Friends, I have a beauty that I am sure there will be no other of this date and design run through here for a while. This is a 1907 $10 gold Indian. For the 1907 year there were many made and kept as well. The rarity to this one piece is - No Motto. There have only been 50 total graded by NGC and I was glad to have the chance to check this piece out while it was in route to a new ownership. Just thought I would share a pic with you. An Interesting Die Variety Find On My NGC 2009 MS68RD Formative Years Lincoln

Wexler WDDR-002 Die Variety Hi everyone. I just recently completed my 2009 Life of Lincoln circulation issue registry set which surprisingly took me the longest to complete in the top grades possible. I just recently added the 2009 Formative Years too my set in the grade of NGC MS68RD of which NGC has only graded 18 so far. When I received the coin in had I noticed it was one of the 10 different die varieties that Wexler has recognized. NGC has not recognized these yet but I hope they will

A Few More Baltimore Show Thoughts

And a long time taking coin pictures... Having bought a third coin in just a couple weeks, I had no more desire to tempt myself at the show on Saturday. But I did go for a couple hours, including the EAC meeting. I looked at one more half dime that I hadn't noticed the previous days. Fortunately, close examination identified it as a loser, and I didn't spend any more. The EAC meeting was good in that it's good to meet up with those friends in the hobby again. But the meeting itself was not v

buyer beware Hello collectors Well I went to a coin show on Saturday. There was about 12 vendors there And they had the what you would expect Mint, proof set coin albums, graded coins of every type . well as most of you know I been working on a grades set of Franklins and my ASE sets and of course anything that may catches my eye graded or not . Anyway I was surprise that I had a lot of the coins that the vendor had ( ex) the 2 coin sets by the mint and proof sets. Well here the rub the

Surprise Gold Acquisition

I have an example of this coin as a silver proof but I didn't know they were minted in gold. My last journal was about my fencing coin custom set so I wasn't planning on writing about this topic so soon, but I spotted this coin on a German auction site and was very surprised to find out that it even existed. Like nearly all other coins depicting fencing, this is an Olympic commemorative. The historic French mint, Monnaie de Paris, produced silver 1-1/2 euro and gold 10 euro proof coins in 20

Two Days in Baltimore

and one to go... As you probably know, the spring Baltimore show is in progress. I was able to escape work to go Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Nothing was especially interesting for me in the Stack's Bowers auction, and I just bought two half dimes, so I wasn't expecting to get anything pricey on the bourse. I was planning on attending the LSCC and EAC meetings. On Thursday, I arrived at about 1:20, registered, entered, and managed to scan all the dealer tables by 4:30. On my way in

More Good Stuff on Friday

There was more to my Friday at the Baltimore show... As I wrote last time, I intended to go to the LSCC and EAC meetings at the Baltimore show. The LSCC was at 9 Friday morning, and the EAC will be this afternoon at 1. The LSCC meeting was pretty standard, with club news and a presentation. With the long-time president of the club and editor of the club journal stepping down this year, we're in transition. One of the changes is that the Gobrecht Journal will start having color.
