A Question From & an Answer/tips to a Beginner Collector Here...

Beginning Collectors can NEVER be armed with too much info...Nor can those that have been collecting for a while. Greetings Collectors, During the last few weeks I have received an abundance of questions & comments from fellow collectors. I have saved their questions/comments and I have saved my answers/replies to them. Also just FYI I don't participate in the message chat boards, but anyone can comment on any post I make here by posting a journal of their own, or by contacting me direct

Don't Forget the Nickel in the Nickel

Response to W.K.F. Journal I didn't see a Chat Board link to discuss W.K.F.'s recent journal regarding the potential composition change in the 5-cent piece, so I am posting a journal. He makes several references to the 75% copper content of the 5-cent piece as a primary reason for starting to hoard/accumulate bulk rolls, but a check on bullion prices showed that copper is trading today at $3.23/pound while nickel (25% of coin) is trading at $6.42/pound. Based on current bullion commodity pr

JFK I was 14 when JFK was assassinated. It left a big impression in my life. I became a paperboy and immediately started collecting KENNEDY halves. And that's the rest of the story........... To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

The Overlooked 1950-Philadelphia Nickel

The Mintage in this year was low, and finding any with a nice strike with five fullsteps are very scarce. There has not been any six fullsteps found to date. Having just recently pulled out my raw Jeff-collection I wanted to see if any of these nickels were going to qualify for Ngc strict grading methods, especially in the fullstep area. Sending in(5)coins a couple weeks ago,I have recieved these back and I wanted to share this one particular Jefferson nickel to you. The 1950-P was the

The Nickel May Soon be Gone & Later You May be Rich...

At least gone in the composition it has always been made in since 1866... Greetings Collectors, I have taken a little break from posting lately but before I make this post, I want to apologize for my last post concerning and insinuating that quite possibly those that rank above me in the $10 Liberty series, may not even own the coins they claim to own. I incorrectly assumed this just because those above me did not have photos or descriptions posted. That is, all but one collector. I know how

Last Year of the Roman Numeral Gold Eagles

Last year of issue, and all PF70 Ultra Cameo Adoption Central was open again last week, (actually the trading room was open) and I traded away two sets of Indians MS61, 1908 - 1929 for this set of four coins which are the last of the Roman Numeral Gold coins. (and some cash) (I still have two sets of the MS62 Indians, same dates) I guess folks who could not read the Roman Numerals got mixed up in what year they were trying to fill in, and away they went, (Roman Numerals on coins that is) Wh

Garys February Coin of the Month

Februarys Coin of the Month is not rare; it has a mintage of 664,833,000. It is not made of silver or gold; it has a bi-metallic composition of stainless steel with an outer ring of bronze plated steel. This coin is not old; it has a date of 2008. This coin is not valuable; you can buy one on EBay for a dollar. In fact, it is unlikely this coin will ever be more valuable than the cost of NGC encapsulation. Nevertheless, I consider this coin priceless for the memories it represents. Februarys

I've Given Up

I am coming to the end of my Commemorative Half Dollar collection and my nemesis is the 1982 George Washington MS. I want as much of my collection as possible to be NGC graded. (Personal preference) Unfortunately, along this entire journey, I have not seen this coin for sale, graded by NGC in MS69. So in an effort to move forward and complete this set, yesterday I gave up and ordered a PCGS specimen. Sigh.... Oh well. There are worse things in life. I wish all of you the best in your collec

Treasure maps, historical research, and metal detectors ...

Recently I had mentioned that I was buying a metal detector and maybe I could get lucky and find some Georgia Gold, or anything numismatic related. Surprisingly my metal detector arrived earlier than I had anticipated. I have spent the entire night researching my county history, as well as the history of my particular area in the county that I live. I have found maps dated far back, and one in particular, dated 1884, that looks very promising. I also uncovered some very interesting information

Mars Cent Update

Abe could use a bath. Back in November 2012 I posted a couple journals about the 1909 VDB cent that is part of a camera calibration target on the Curiosity outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed currently exploring Mars. For a photo taken shortly after the outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed arrived on Mars, see http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/JournalDetail.aspx?JournalEntryID=12493 In that photo you can see a few grains of fine Martian sand. The situation a little over a year later has chang

NGC Journal Award Plaque just arrived, I am very honored with this award This chilly Saturday afternoon in snow covered northern NJ a package from NGC arrived and I was initially thinking that my annual membership renewal was enclosed. I was pleasantly surprised to see that instead, my 2013 Journal award had arrived. The 8*10 plaque is a glossy black with gold lettering and is just outstanding, a DPL PF70* to be sure ! Already in 2014 I have read some simply outstanding journals, with gr

I got the" BLUES"

Like alway ---- Searching again!! Friends, I spent part of the week searching 1971 mint sets --- 18 of them and also looking for a variety in 18 Proof Ikes I got in a trade. Well as I thought,43 years after the sale of these Ikes I would not find a variety. One thing I surely got that they could not find on the 1971 proofs 43 years ago is "The Ike Blues". Enjoy, Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Be gentle, this is my first post!

Not really sure what goes here to be honest. Hello fellow collectors, Thank you for taking the time to read my first journal entry here. I joined this website several months ago after being out of the hobby for a little while. Since Thanksgiving of 2012, I have been back scouring ebay for the best buys, attending some local shows and reading and researching all things numismatic. I did have the chance to attend my first major coin show at the FUN event in Orlando last month. I had a grea

Almost complete is not quite the same as complete

Buying my first $4K coin! I never would have considered spending $4K for a single stock or option but I am quickly reaching the point where the cost of one single coin will mean the difference between a complete set or one missing a single coin. Well, through hook or crook, I have managed to obtain all but 8 American Silver Eagles (MS and PF). I can see the finish line in sight and it will only be a matter of time (and money) to add the final coins. It has been great to perform the research

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals

Medals with Presidential provenance... I finished writing my first numismatic book (the name of the book is the same as the title of this journal entry). The book is based on documents from the White House, US Treasury Department, and US Mint in Philadelphia. These documents were part of a working file belonging to a top military aide on President Eisenhower's White House Staff. The file was kept by the military aide. After his death, all his papers was passed to his son. After the son passed,

Obscured Sets & Sets with NO PICS or DESCRIPTIONS???

Those of you with good pics and even better descriptions worked your A-- off getting there... I know!!! BEWARE there are a couple of "rants" below! Greetings Collectors, Well the coins I was waiting on finally arrived today. And with these four additions I am broke, but did finally reach my goal of making it into the top ten of my $10 Liberty/Coronet gold (1838-1906) minted at the New Orleans Mint with this 1854-O small date. I have just two more coins I will be able to trade for and after t

Numisma-Quest Win and then the let down ....

It is not very often, since I moved from Utah and would frequent the Nevada state line and Wendover, NV. for a little excursion gambling, that I find myself in the position of actually winning something. However, I overcame the odds somehow and actually knew the answer to the weekly Numisma-Quest trivia question a week or so ago. As is known by all that participate - knowing the answer is just part of the challenge as you have to be picked randomly as well. I felt confident that I had answe

Long Term Goal Reached

IMPORTANT NEWP Well, I have always wanted to write a Journal Entry. I promised myself that, SOMEDAY, when I got to a certain numismatic milestone that it would happen, since I wanted to write a proper and appropriate one, after all. As it so happens, TODAY is that day and I have FINALLY reached that momentous point! I joined the NGC Registry here back in 2005 and I then made an attempt to buy some Early Walkers for my set. I bought the 1917 PCGS MS 64, 1918 NGC MS 64, 1918-D PCGS MS 63,

Recent upgrades

Mercury and Barber dimes At all of the bigger shows (ANA, FUN, etc.), Mark Saltzberg does collectors a service by giving his opinion on coins free-of-charge. Never pass up the chance to have him look at coins I think have a chance at upgrade. An almost sure thing for 68FB in my mind was a 1935 Mercury I'd bought in a third-world slab. Sure enough, Mark saw 68*FB in it. Image attached. At FUN a few weeks ago, I got a surprise when 67+FB came out of nowhere on a '40S Mercury. Image attached. An

Clarification on wait times for grading

How long is it really if the estimated wait time changes while your coins were "Scheduled for Grading"? OK...I submitted some coins at the FUN show in Orlando and they have been scheduled for grading for quite some time, which was expected since the estimated time for Economy service was 28 days when these were submitted. This week, I noticed now that the estimated time for Economy is now up to 35 days (probably with the Silver Eagles coming out creating a boatload of submissions). While the

Blessings and Windfalls from Recent Roosevelt Dime Submissions

What's happening all. Cold enough for ya? I just wanted to post a quick journal about a few NGC submission blessings and windfalls that have been recently returned. Did you know.

I love trivia. FYI: Five-cent coins minted from 1942 to 1945 did not contain any nickel. A special wartime alloy was used consisting of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% maganese. And I thought only the penny was different due to the war. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

The satisfaction of completing a registry set!

Will the pleasure be followed by pain? This is my first post. Yesterday I purchased a coin to fill the last slot in my presidential dollar error set. What I felt was unexpected satisfaction of proving my brother wrong. He said I should be happy to add a few error coins each year. I had also felt I would never fill all the slots. I've enjoyed receiving the awards for best set. Now I guess I will attempt to upgrade a few of my slots to higher grades if affordable. I hope all of you will comp
