Anyone planning a modern submission soon ?

I would like to match!! Friends, I have my new subscription and plan on knocking down this pile of modern era coins for NGC grading. I would like to hook up with a few that are doing the same. Surely the dates would be different --- being different mint sets and trades would be a great time!! If you are doing a 1970 to date submission this summer give me a shout and we will work a few trades out. Later---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can b

Market Trends and Originality

Lucky 1947 coin This is my highest graded Walker to date (MS 66 plus---I picked it up a few months ago) and it is a beautifully original, golden, pear-green & apricot, untouched gem. The strike is also sufficiently above average for the issue. It is just slightly rarer than it's 1947-D brethren, except in superb gem condition, and they are not known any higher than that (MS 67 grade.) The luster is just amazing. This is a lower mintage Philadelphia issue. But being the last date of the s

What's Up With This Coin ?

I am thinking about buying this coin, but it has an odd look. Any thoughts out there about the coin's condition? This coin has an odd look about it and not being an experienced US gold coin collector, I am looking for input. NGC has graded it an MS-61. Thanks. THIS COIN FELL FROM THE SKY Something I have been wanting to do for a long time; drive around looking for fun coins to add to my collection. Well, when I saw this one I just had to have it. A silver coin with a piece of meteor. A 2013 Fiji Silver $10, with an actual piece of meteor embedded in it. I guess the meteor fell in France in 1815. The coin is in an NGC holder thicker than usual. I guess this is what collecting is all about; the rare and unusual. There were onl

Slow Season

Not a lot of journals lately on CS Seems like there have been few journals on the board lately so I will add one, as I so infrequently do. I guess summer is here, at least according to the thermometer (90 today in SC), even if the calendar says three more weeks of spring. My collecting has slowed down this year as the price tags for the coins i'm looking for are geting pretty high. I added another GSA Morgan dollar to my set early this month I got a mixed bag of results from my last NGC s

National Military Appreciation Month

Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the opportunity to publically demonstrate their appreciation for the sacrifices and successes made by our service members - past and present. Each year the president makes a proclamation, reminding Americans of the important role the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country. http://www.military.com/military-appreciation-month Armed Forces Appreciation Month

Bubble, Bubble Toil and Trouble

How to go insane without going crazy. I have been apparently inactive for a long time, but that was only on line and with making changes in my registry. Since August of last year, as some of you know, I have been boiling away a lot of the slag in my collection. I was having trouble deciding which direction to go, and sets were totally driving me crazy so I worked hard to find and put together four sets of Indians, the 15 coin set. Two were MS61 and two were MS62. Well, after all the shenan

Unlisted So Called Dollar Variety: HK-723 "Star without Rays" ...Souvenir of Honolulu

Undocumented variety in So-Called Dollars by Hibler and Kappen. It has been a while since I posted a journal entry. I finally purchased a HK-723 "star without rays" variety. This variety is unlisted in So-Called Dollars by Hibler and Kappen. However, its listed in Hawaiian Money Standard Catalog. 2M-393 is the "star without rays" variety and 2M-394 is the "star with rays". The "with rays" and "without rays" are not minor varieties. There is one more difference. The "star with rays" we

1920S FH Standing Liberty Quarter

Looking for grading opinions Take a look at this 1920S SLQ. I've cracked it out and sent it to PCGS for grading a three times and got different grades back each time. Full head for sure (came back FH each time)---the head is beast for the issue---so not concerned with that, just want some opinions as to numeric grade. Not going to say what I think it is/should be. Just looking for a few opinions. Thanks !!! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added

Soon to get the gears grinding again!!

My collecting motor has been down for a while now. Friends, Well I am soon to renew my NGC membership and start sending in more of those great coins I have been hoarding. It has been a rough winter cash wise but my work schedule is flowing once again. I did manage to do a few sales and trades with promissory notes while I was low on cash but have overcome the debts and now ready to start spending a little cash on new coin ventures. I hope to complete my sets 1965 to date and start back coll

1969-1970 Roosevelt Dime Transitional Varieties

In the March/April issue of CONECA's ErrorScope, Tanay Wakhare wrote an article about the little discussed transitional reverse varieties of the 1969 and 1970 Roosevelt dimes.   What the heck is that?   Well, basically there are two reverse types found on 1969-P, 1970-P, and 1970-D Roosevelt dimes, As Wakhare explains in the article:"The regular reverse (RDV-001) features the torch in low relief, while the transitional reverse is RDV-002; it's obvious to the naked eye since it has two deep v

A Young Collector's Rear View Mirror

Observations and Thoughts from a Younger Collector after 3 Years of Building Sets. After almost 3 years of coin collecting, I wanted to share my thoughts with the general community on my experiences to date and some observations as well as opinions that I have formed. First let me disclose that "youth" is a relative term! I would love to tell you I am in my early 20's but more mid-30s. I think we can all agree that collecting has a diverse base both young and old. Good For A Scent

Lost my best friend Although I still read the board and occasionally comment, I haven't posted any journals lately. mainly because even though I have recently retired I haven't been very motivated to write as I recently lost my best friend, my faithful mini schnauzer Bogart to cancer. Bogart, or "Bogie" was truly my best buddy. I have previously read ( and I am paraphrasing) "that in a way its a blessing that dogs don't live too long, else the pain would be too great to bear as we grow to lo

Eric Newman Collection

My collection when I'm gone I was talking to my wife about the Eric Newman collection that was recently auctioned off. I told her about how a lot of his great coins were purchased for less than $100. I think we got about 6 good miles before she put in her headphones and told me the conversation was over. I also thought about how gut wrenching it must be for Mr. Newman to watch his life's work be broken up. Even though the proceeds are going toward the advancement of numimatics, I don't t

VAM's

I am trying to understand the idiosyncrasies of the varieties (VAM) of the Morgan Dollar. Not having the trained eye for the various variations I am glad that there is a website like VAM World. The pictures are especially useful, however, I don't always see the differences in the coins I have of the particular year and mint. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Losing and rebuilding a world class collection

The story of Antonin Prokop highlights one of the important qualities of a serious coin collector -- sheer persistence. The Czech numismatist, Antonin Prokop, lived and worked in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century and assembled an exceptional collection of Russian coins during Tsarist rule. In 1919, however, the Soviets considered it communal property and confiscated the collection. It was subsequently auctioned off to foreign dealers. Prokop was able to leave Russia in 1921, takin

Show day part 2

Meeting up with Gary H Gary beat me to the story that happened post- show but I will add to it a little bit. I got to meet Gary's wife and of course she is just as nice a person as Gary is (as expected!) The bigger thrill for me than the show itself was that Gary had brought his whole photography set-up to take some photos of my quarters set. I learned very quickly why I can't get good photos of my coins! I can't explain his whole setup- but it involves camera stand- 2 special lights- a high

It was not all that long ago that Michael added this coin to his collection and shared his excitement with me. Between Michael and our friend Donald Garrett, who passed away just before the FUN Sh

Midstates show in Illinois

Part 1 I went to the Midstates Coin show on the first free admission day, Thursday April 23. The timing with income taxes being due a week before did not leave me with a lot of extra cash, so I was not looking to make any significant purchases. Since I collect both certified and raw coins I like to spend my time at the shows mainly looking at raw coins. I realize the dealers have a lot overhead for shows so I don't expect to get any good deals, so I am mainly looking for tougher dates or nice
