Whitman Baltimore Show.

A number of observations. First, again, Whitman delivered a great convention. There were a lot of dealers there with incredible inventory. I saw a lot more paper money and certified coins than I had seen in other shows in the past. There were dealers large and small, as well as the US Mint. The original plan was for me wife to come to Baltimore with me. She was going to do some shopping while I went to the convention. Since it was raining, she decided to come inside with me for a little

The Hobby We All Love...Follow-Up With Input by 2 Others You All Know...

A couple emails received from our fellow collectors, that I'm sure you will gain way more than a little from reading them... Enjoy!Greetings Fellow Collectors,My last couple journals seemed to have exposed company in my mindset, and in my feelings I shared with you all. And to share just a couple emails I have received:The first is from a collector I've known and respected for years. His name is Gary and you will see his user ID below. Most if not all of you know him. But in the case you do not

Hobbies & The Justification We Use To Continue Them...

The stories and the tales used to continue doing what we do...Here are a few good arguments for those of you who play a lawyer on TV. Greetings Collectoors, Marcus aka Texans Coins hit the nail right on the head. And thank you Marcus for your kind words & your journals also. Wow did it bring back memories of my statements when caught or the rush to beat the wife to the mail kiosk to name a couple things. I'm sure that there are many who have had an appetite in the procurement of coin

NGCs Coin of the Day on their Face Book Page NGC MS66RB 1955 Doubled Die Obverse Licoln

Today was my day Hi everyone. Not sure if most of you know that NGC has a coin of the day post on their Face Book page where they display some amazing coins each day. Today they used my NGC MS66RB 1955 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Wheat Cent for their coin of the day. Here is the link. Hobbies

A continuation of W.K.F's journal. W.K.F. Gave us a well written piece about the hobby that we all enjoy and I truly enjoyed reading it. However, he left out the most important aspect of our hobby.... Justifying it to our spouses! (Please take what follows as the satire it is intended to be) We've all been there; a new coin comes in the mail, you rip the package open, admire it, add it to your registry and start to tell your spouse how great it is and how much it improves your set. Hobbies??? & When you've Chosen This Particular One...

All hobbies as you know, cost money! Some, way more than others... Greetings Collectors, Hobbies are something that most Americans enjoy. Some love to play golf. Others are heavily into fishing and will go out every chance they get. Although I have never enjoyed the hobby or sport of hunting, there are many that do. Those with deep pockets will go to far away places such as Africa for big game, and those with a more shallow wallet will just count the days until deer season comes in the Fa

I hope to go on Saturday I hope to be able to go on Saturday. I don't have a whole lot to spend, but I enjoy looking. Last time, I spoke with a dealer from San Antonio, my birth city, who had an incredible counterfeit coin collection (Personal collection, not for sale) and a creepy guy who kept trying to buy it. I also saw a collection of 25 consecutively numbered 1899 Black Eagles. It was a great time last time and should be this time as well. Happy collecting.   Marcus To see old

The Other Side of the Coin

What's to tease? I already wrote that it's cracked; well, the dies were... Here's the obverse of the 1868-S half dime I "won" in Heritage's auction of the Bently collection last week. As I wrote last time, both dies were in pretty bad shape. Like the reverse, the obverse shows several cracks, mostly at the top - opposite the most obvious cracks near the bottom of the reverse. It also has areas of die bulging and flow lines. In addition to the issues with the dies, the coin has a number of m

Coin Doctoring IS NOT OK in my Opinion...

But many of you know that every big dealer in this country has been guilty of doing just that. But me, I do not do that. Some of you may think otherwise, & that's your right. Greetings Collectors, I probably should not have posted that last journal, and will maybe delete it, now that Ive thought about it. Then again maybe I won't. Haven't decided yet. To comment on what Joe said, I agree 110%. It's just that I have had so many nice, mostly gold coins that were in good slabs originally

Commentary on "Little Tricks to get "Details Graded" Coins into Regular Slabs..."

I've experienced the woes of having a coin come back Details Graded, but seriously... WKF...I was intrigued by your article, but soon got kind of grossed out. Ear wax? Seriously? I hope I never get a coin that you had sent in for grading! NGC might need to come up with a new details description: Waxed, Ear. Hey man just kidding. As far as carrying a coin around in your pocket. Doesn't it seem that doing so would only cause more wear? Who out there would want a coin that was carried arou

1st entry

Just joined today... I have been interested in coins, and collecting coins since I was a small child. I have merely done this as a hobby until very recently, while going through my coins and found a few with some actual "value"! This has opened my eyes to a world that I previously have never known to exist. As a beginner, the road to learning numismatics has been quite a learning experience. I knew I needed to join a grading and or collecting society, but wasn't sure whether to go with NGC, or

My First Custom Set-The Doubled Vision Lincoln Cent Collection

Makes my eyes hurt Hi Everyone. It has been awhile since I posted. I just created my first custom set "The Doubled Vision Lincoln Cent Collection" and I wanted to share it. Recently I acquired one of only 2 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln's graded NGC MS66. One is graded in MS66 Red and my example in MS66 Red Brown. With the addition of that coin and my NGC MS68RD 2009 Formative Years which although NGC does not recognize this variety yet it is a

1909D and 1917 type 1 for my 25c type set. Hi all, its been awhile since I posted here so I thought I would share pictures of a couple of new quarters. I collect on a limited budget so I don't look for coins in a high grade, just ones with eye appeal. Both of these are graded AU-55, let me know what you think of them. The other images are in the first reply. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

All Cracked Up

I'm starting to like getting late die state coins. Yesterday, I picked up another Liberty Seated half dime from Heritage's sale of the Bently collection in San Francisco. It is an 1868-S, and seems to be in about the latest die state described by Blythe. I'm not sure why, but coins with lots of clash marks, die cracks, and other signs of die age have been drawing my interest lately. In this case, both dies were in pretty bad shape. Happy Collecting to All! To see old comments for this J

Coin Reduction Commonplace and Sensible

Seasoned collectors are shifting high numismatic premium coins to other vehicles. I am definitely seeing this more and more. And the NGC blogs are following suit. Is it a race to the numismatic bottom ? Collectors, older and younger are sizing up their collections and saying , " Why did I ever buy THAT ". Now it's a race to the bottom, the " race to shake ". Changing the 100 coin collection to a 30 coin collection. Changing that $2,000 silver coin to 1 ounce of gold and 20 ounces of si

Red Katanga

Finest Certified Franc of Katanga! I just added the finest certified 1 Franc coins of Katanga, a region of the Belgian Congo, to my collection. NGC MS66RD!!! Although quite a common coin in general, finding a choice gem piece with original full red color is very difficult. I guess that's why there is only one graded this high and none higher at either service. As nice as one would hope to have in a top notch collection like my Belgian Congo sets. Please take a look. My big score

Bundled the purchase of 4 Proof sets in one internet deal Hello friends, As I have previously written, I have added to my collecting goals the completion of Proof sets from 1954-1964 in the NGC multi holders. After diligently searching ebay for months I had found the 1955, 1958, 1960 (small date cent) and 1964 sets with the 1955 PF 67/ PF68 (the nickel) set clearly the crown jewel of these holdings. Constant ebay searching resulted in no new purchases for over two months, not necessaril

Collection reduced from over 100 NGC and PCGS Certified Coins - Now the methodical rebuild.

In my last journal entry I reflected on my reevaluation of my current collection goals, or lack thereof, and what path I would choose for a future collection, that would more accurately reflect the pride I have in collecting these small slices of history. More than likely most have noticed that I have listed my current certified collection, both moderns and classic coins, through Great Collections and, although I will be lucky to even come close to breaking even, the response has been excellen

I came out ok on the price. and gave my some more funds for other coins. yesterday I ordered a Franklin for my set so for now and the rest of the year I will focus on the few set I have left, but as you all know If something c

A Neon Lighting for the day

Found in a batch for sale!! Friends, Last week a member here sent me a very large group of raw morgans to sell for him. These are nice Morgans for a dansco or whitman album set. He has decided to go all in on high graded coins and decided to sell these. Anyway --- As I did pics and pricing I kept eyeing a very nice toner -- 1879-S that kept trying to get out from the complete collection. I decided to share a pic of the reverse of which matches the obverse. ENJOY!! To see old co

Not leaving the hobby - Just following through with my previous plan to reevaluate my collecting goals.

Not long ago I mentioned in a journal entry that I was reevaluating my collecting goals and the box of twenty, or something similar, was the direction I was going. I have consigned the majority of my collection with an auction house that is known well, Great Collections, and to many it would seem as though I am getting out of the hobby altogether since I also have listed in the Money Marketplace the sell of all the plastic NGC and PCGS Slab Boxes that I own. This could not be further from re

NGC Award ..... Finally I joined NGC right before the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagles came out to take benefit of the grading costs to a dealer as opposed to sending them a dealer. I began registering sets shortly thereafter. based on scores several of my sets should've been ranked #1 because they were graded 70 but for whatever reasons they weren't and from what I could tell the date registering the set didn't affect the ranking. But a few were ranked #1. I was hoping to get an award for 20

Home from the ANA Money Show and some pictures of the Saddle Ridge Hoard.

What a blast Hi everyone. Got home late last night from the ANA Money Show in Atlanta. What an amazing show. I was there too display my Lincoln Memorial registry set for the 1st time in a competitive display and I received a 3rd place ribbon in the historical and political category. I was very pleased. I learned a lot from this show. One thing for sure it is not the value of your display but how it is presented so that the general public can walk in and understand what you are displaying
